Membership to this society centers around four distinct points: excellence in scholarship, leadership, character, and service through- out the student's four years in high school. The faculty selects the members from those having a scholarship rank in the first one-fourth of their class, but only fifteen per cent of these can be chosen. The insignia of this Society is the torch of knowledge engraved on a gold pin, lighting up the initial letters of the above four points. Most of these students have majored in mathematics. science, and fore'gn language, or commercial subjects and have won their scholastic honors by hard work. page twenty-six Sept. Sept. Oct. Oct. Nov. How extraordinary! But I shall do my best if you concentrate. Gazing into the wonderful crystal I see glittering gold. This sign means that you have been financially successful. How did you manage Y Oh yes, by sell-ng pencils, magazines and-how clever--by having a magcian and Whistling Joe to come to your school. I see now two rooms decorated as for parties. The smaller is your class party and the larger that successful Junior-Senior Reception. All .s noi gold that glitters, however, for I see the glitterings of literary talent. The Junior Literary Program is the example of this trait. Everything has vanished from the crystal, but no! Here is some- thlrg else! 'I'i,ere are balls and more balls flying through the air- basketb, lls, footballs, and baseballs. Such fellows as Rall, Dutcher, lireshner, Kinderdine, Gephart and Wolpers are catching footballs. In the following paragraphs will be found a short account of activities in which the various clubs participated. The Miamisburg Hi-Y club started this year with a new ambition and ideal. President Fred Hiehle, Treasurer George Kuhn, and Craig Borden, along with our county secretary, Mr. Rhodes, attended the State Training Camp, Nelson Dodds, and they have attempted to con- vey to the club the true Hi-Y spirit. The Ideal Girl--her Manner and Purpose comprised the theme of the 1931-32 Girl Reserves. Graciousness of manner, impartiality of judgment, loyalty and sincerity they have all tried to attain, and they have tried to live up to their slogan, To face life squarely. The Mo He Se Ca Ce, a club formulated to stimulate keener in- terest in the work of science, has come to the end of two years of ex- istence. In April the club sponsored a high school assembly, with vari- ous demonstrations. The purpose of the assembly was to create an interest among the school students in the field of chemistry. This year has been a prosperous one in Miamisburg High School for the clubs, especially the History Club. It is under the auspices of Miss Elizabeth Christy with Elizabeth Moore as president. The stenographic division of Miamisburg High organized itself into a society known as the Commercial Club. Its purpose is to encourage and stimulate interest in commercial activities and to learn more about business practices and to promote a spirit of cooperation in the depart- ment. The Galley Slaves, as the printing club has been known, was organized for the first time during the past school year. The nine members, all students in the printing class, were all slaves to the print- ers' galley. Voici the French Club. 'Tis our bit To learn from verb to verb to flit And have some fun while doing it. N'est-ce pas? The Physics Club, sponsored by Mr. Roese enjoyed a very success- ful year, the experiments conducted by the members proving both in- teresting and educational. The boys' and girls' choruses were also well organized during the year, both singing at various scfhool assemblies and programs. Mr. Parman directed the activities of both for the first time this year. Mr. Parman also was in charge of the band and orchestra. Sodalitus Latina, the Latin Club was sponsored by Miss Grennan and Miss Smith. Latin conversation as well as Roman life occupied the minds of the twenty-five members. Miss Carr sponsored an active Dramatic Art class during the year. The class gave a very interesting assembly program in March, which was well received by the student body. The Blue and White, the school bi-weekly paper, received a change in publication during the year, it being printed through the co-operation of the printing and commercial departments. Mary Louise Hiehle edited the paper. page thirty-one . THE MIRUS :L-.. -41..- 142 PH if '74 , , 1 Af'- . ,W 3 .F . A 'N fi 'P :K I 1 l P . V R 15 . The class of 1933 de- serves much credit for its work in making the reception a success. In the gymnas- x ium, beautifully decorated in yellow and white, the Senioris class colors, with the L9-ll music by Jack Houghton's orchestra, the - graduating class was tendered a delightful dinner followed by an enjoyable evening of dancing. ' Harry Gehring's orchestra, well known in Miami Valley music circles, provided the music for the senior Prom , which was held on Monday eve- ning, May 9th. The Miamisburg High School Alumni Association welcomed the grad- uates as members with the customary dinner, speeches and dancing. Eddie Brookes' orchestra was available for this occasion which was well attended by the old grads? Three class parties were also held during the school year, and each met with outstanding success. A Senior Halloween party was followed by a Junior party at Christmas time, both being well received by the students. The final class affair was the Freshman April Fool party which was well attended by the upper classmen. Decorations suitable for the occasion were provided for each party, and well known orchestras furnished the music at the three class social functions. LITERARY PROGRAMS ' Each class presented a program of literary and dramatical features during the school year. Each program was well filled with educational and interesting playlets and talks. The pre- sentations were well attended in each instance. page forty-one THE MIRUS fa: i gms? English Denison University. B. S. Athletic Director Physical Education In his first year as athletic director of Miamisburg high school, Horace G. English brought new laurels to a school already renowned for athletic prowess. Miamisburg has always been represented in athletic engagements by a typical hard-fighting team. never easily de- feated, and the year 1931-32 was without exception. Coach English brought Miamisburg its first Miami Valley League championship, that coming in football after going through a strenuous ten-game schedule, suffering but a single defeat. As a result of the achievement, a beautiful silver trophy now remains the property of Miamisburg High, that trophy symbolizing a league championship. Miamisburg made a hard bid for the supremacy of the league in basketball, but the end of the season found Greenville occupying first place in the league standing. Miamisburg holds a victory over this championship Greenville team, and victories over Middletown and Xenia are other accomplishments of a successful court season. Coach English is a graduate of Stivers High School, Dayton, and Denison University, starring in all branches of athletics at both schools. Miamisburg is indeed fortunate in securing the services of Horace G. English, and he has evidenced the fact that he is proud of his Miamis- burg Viking athletic combinations. page forty-five THE MIRUS fini: Ji ,V nv- gp: ,Q X -w A, 5 l. Dutcher. 2. Freshner. 3. Horace English brought Miamisburg its first Miami Valley League championship in the 1931 football season. Miamisburg finished the season with three league wins, with but one defeat and one tie. tying Greenville for the league honors. Getting away to a brilliant start by emerging victorious over the football representatives of four schools, VVesl Carrollton, Roosevelt, Tipp City, and Franklin, the Burgers hit a slump in mid-season to drop an important Miami Valley League game to Troy by the score of 6-14. However, they came back strong to defeat Xenia Central, Sidney, Piqua, and tie Greenville and Dayton Fairview. This made a total of seven victories, two ties, and one defeat and co-champs with Green- ville in the Miami Valley League. The most outstanding features of the season were Miamisburg's 6-0 victory over Roosevelt, and the shaving of honors with Greenville for the Miami Valley League championship. Miamisburg's victory over Roosevelt was their first victory over the Dayton school in six years of competition. Jim Gebhart was chosen guard, Paul Hadley, end, and Rex Weaver, quarter-back, on the first all Miami Valley team. In all of the losses Miamis- burg's opponents triumphed by only a single point, although the local cagers managed to gain more points in the entire season than did their opponents. The Vikings launched their season by defeating Springboro 16-14. The following week they dropped a close game to Roosevelt by the score of 21-22. On January 8, Miamisburg played their first Miami Valley league game with Greenville and defeated them 19-17. West Carorllton then bested Miamisburg in an overtime game. Piqua was the second league rival to meet defeat at the hands of Miamisburg. Kiser then took the Burgers into camp in an exciting game. Miamis- burg then proceeded to defeat Xenia and Franklin and lose to Troy and Sidney, two important league games. Miamisburg was in top form when they defeated Middletown 20-18. Tipp City, Germantown, and Fairview's best did not quite equal that of the Blue and VVhite and were subdued easily. In the last game on the schedule Miamisburg was defeated by Oakwood by the score of 16-17. pnge forty-nine THE MIRUS CONGRATULATIONS 'ro THE cLAss or 1932 FARRELUS SHOE REPAIR - and - PET SHOP 70 S. Dear Graduate, Now that you are leaving good old Alma Mater, you are beginning to peer eagerly into the future. Five, ten years from now, life will become a business, living an oc- cupation, and you will have made your mark in the world. Then recollections of school friendships and school mem- ories will begin to crowd upon you. In those happy moments of retrospection, you will go to a place of keeping for treasured pieces, and bring forth a bit of verse, a fragment of an old school song, your class picture. Then, and only then, will you realize how those priceless possessions hold forever captive the joyous spirit of those never-to-be-forgotten school days of Life's morning. And, my dear graduate, it is my only wish that to those mementos, you add just one fleeting thought of your ever loyal and constant friend.
