Harvard Who has been connected with the Miamis- burg Schools for twenty years, fifteen of these years as Superintendent of the Miamisburg and Miami Township schools. I do not know that I could make entirely clear to the outsider the pleasure I have in teaching. I had rather earn my living by teach- ing than in any other way. In my mind, teach- ing is not merely a life Work, a profession, an occupation, a struggleg it is a passion. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Well, it was this Way--our class commenced things in high school in the year 1927, When we were freshies, as it were. That year was not a series of incredible events, but we did give a party, together with the Sophomores. As Sophomores We did our bit in the athletic line, not to mention scholastics. Following the hoppish custom, We gave a Sophomore Hop. Our literary program will be bourne in mind inasmuch as the leading act was a style show, featured by the modish males. As Juniors We gained admittance to Room 23 with the time honor- ed Seniors under the kindly guidance of Miss Grennan and Mr. Erisman. bgpuhllnjh X However, Miss Carr and Mr. Millard Were our chief pilots as sponsors. ' . WM The Literary Program this year dealt with literature among the foreign ,wt 44 i masses. Our play Blame It On Sandy was a great success. Again jg, we gave a Christmas party! It Was all successful, too. In sports both TU the male and female species shone. We are planning a reception for the Seniors which shall be both X? a fitting and proper ending for the Junior year. if c. z. and L. s. , qi .f hiwiw l W Q X 26 'fi I C X8 IF? How we dread it for we all simply love school and all our teachers, even though they are cruel to us. Miss Smith and Mr. Young tried to guide us on the right road. By the way, you know Mr. Young. Well, his chief occupation is not teach- ing biology or chemistry, or being a sponsor for us Sophs. No siree. It's slamming us poor innocent children. That's it. Rex Weaver, Paul Hadley, Jimmy Gebhart, and Charles Stevens were our football men. Rex Weaver, Fred Hiehle, Lester Bashford, Robert Hiatt, and Jim- my Gebhart were our basketball stars, while Harry Jackson, Lester Bashford, Rex Weaver, and Eddie Miller showed us how to play base- ball. H February 28 was a big night . We gave an indoor Chautauqua, 4,272 four shows in one. Four of our professional speakers gave a debate iii and our Well known actors and actresses presented two plays. Then -. Qi? X X too, our Valentine Party went over with a great whoop. f'V7j: :.N , rl' Rex Weaver seems to be the most prominent member of our class ' A this year. He received the cup for being the best representative of the v..,.,,.... athletic gentleman. He has been on the honor roll several times, fp- and so has Dorothy Beachler. H. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY Speaking of history, little did Columbus realize back in 1492 when he embarked on the great unknown seas that 437 years later, 107 rather green seekers after knowledge would embark on the great seas of learning by entering the Miamisburg High School. Here they were to seek knowledge and attempt to ascertain among other things whether or not their grandmothers were monkeys, Cevolutionarily speakingj. Well, anyway, here we were and here we stayed much to the joy of the upper classmen who needed someone over whom to exercise their authority. They recognized our ability in the line of athletics, when the following received letters after defeating the majority of their op- lllf, ponents: Parramore, Kinderdine, VVolphers, Kuhn, Dimatteo, Whitesel. I7 Mr. Millard helped the class fame by coaching them in a truly success- XB 'Xl ful cage season. ' . fd' AW. Our next noticeable achievement was our Literary Program. We ,,f,:e,.,'i i., entertained the public with a play, debate and other miscellaneous features. The big event of our year was the Freshie Party. Heeter's M5 Orchestra was the dancers' delight while ping pong was played by those ' W who did not dance. F. B. and V. S. YI' - ix HN i i X 30 . r X 7 X - - f wig. ,L 'Q if mx! . .Mtn F ,WZ 5 . Earnestly Coach Wright drilled the meager material available to develop a winning team. Many moves and changes were made before he was satisfied. After a poor start, losing to Middletown and Roosevelt on succes- sive week-ends, each by a lone touchdown, wfhich was in itself enough to break the moral of any team, his efforts were rewarded in a 33 to 6 victory over Franklin. Troy was the first Miami Valley League team to face Miamisburg and they defeated the locals 13 to O. Xenia was met on the following Saturday and a 25 to 0 defeat was administered to them. The third trip away from home took the Wrightmen to Sidney where they found themselves well matched and the aggressive Sidney squad held them to a 7 to 7 dead-lock. A jaunt north brought Miamisburg to Piqua, another League foe, the fourth to be encountered in a row. Piqua was primed for the con- flict and the Blue and White was subdued 47 to 0. Oakwood furnished opposition for the next game and in a well played game was beaten 14 to 7. yy pn. Greenville was next on the schedule, the last League battle to be S Hill fought. The game was played at Greenville and the teams were evenly ' matched. Miamisburg finally won 7 to 0 to uphold the standard that fy' W' no Miamisburg team could go down to defeat before a Greenville team. R. In the final game of the season Fairview came, saw, and went home W!? X conquered, by a 13 to 6 score in a Thanksgiving day game made unin- teresting by much fumbling due to the extreme cold. 1' ' THQ' I X N 'H X 'ww X' - .. RESERVE TEAM Eight victories with no defeats and champions of the Reserve teams of the Miami Valley League is the story of the Blue and White second team. The reserves launched upon their string of wins by scoring a 17 to 12 triumph over Middletown on January 3. Greenville was the first League team to fall before the locals. Their best was 10 points to the reserve's 17. Xenia Central was outscored ten to one the following week when the reserves hung up their third victory 30 to 3. Piqua's best did not quite equal that of the Blue and VVhite, and they were subdued 24 to 19. Troy was the fourth League rival to meet defeat at the hands of the reserves, being set back by a 24 to 19 score. Miamisburg outscored Sidney 25 to 8 to win their final League game. Roosevelt freshmen were 'walloped the following week 40 to 15 ' and Germantown was defeated 29 to 14 to end the season for the Re- ' serves. Thirty-four girls reported for first practice. Finally the squad was diminished to seventeen of which four were letter-men. Everyone was treated to a surprise when the team came out of the Springboro game, December 1, with a victorious score of 32 to 22. When the hard-fighting Carlisle sextet journeyed to M. H. S. on December 21 they were defeated 32 to 26. January 4 the customary game between the high school fair ones and the alumni came off with our girls on the small end of the score, 31 to 25. The next week an exciting game with our old rival, West Carroll- ton, was exhibited, the Marshites winning with a score of 21 to 18. The Franklin game was the beginning of a downward run for them, the former winning 13 to 12. A sad tale is to be told of the game with Centerville on February 8. The team was repulsed 28 to 18. On February 21 the Oakwood girls trounced them 26 to 12. Germantown showed some brilliant team work when they downed jewel the M. H. DEBATING CLUB Resolved, that trial before a judge or board of judges be substi- tuted for trial before petit jury in the United States was the subject of debate this year. Wilhelmina Schwytzer, Elizabeth Richards, and Frances Cade took the affirmative side of the question, while Buford Bashford, Pauline Richards, and Carl Spencer upheld the negative. The two teams were members of the seventh district of the Ohio State High School Debate League. On December 6 the affirmative team defeated Xenia, and the neg- ative met defeat from Middletown. The affirmative lost the decision against Hamilton on, January 10. The next evening the negative was defeated by Clarksville, later champ- i, ion of the district. -L., In the last debates on February 23 and 24 the negative Won over 07' West Chester, and the affirmative lost to Lockland. 1 M lf. - it ia 43 t l f :Q 19' lx y..fz-': wwf R6 -:FAUX Nik C X it X X ' 'Q . SENIOR PLAY Dick Barrington has fallen in love with a chorus girl, Tot Marvel, who has been invited to the palatial Barrington Mansion to meet Mrs. Barrington, Richard's mother. His Aunt Peggy Carton and her husband, the Rev. William Carton are making a special trip to Rockmere to see the girl. Tot gets in a scrape and fails to arrive. To have someone to introduce as Tot, Dick gets a bookseller, Honor Bright, to take Tot's place for the evening. Late in the evening the real Tot arrives and the fireworks begin. However, she and Dick realize that they really don't love each other. They send for her press agent and lover, Bill Drum. Honor Bright's work now being completed, she prepares to go, but Dick suddenly realizes that he really loves her, and curtain closes on the two lovers making plans for the future. The leads were splendidly carried by Justin Smith and Florence Weidner as Dick and Honor. Comedy relief was furnished by Philip Cade and Berneda Fultz as the Bishop and Mrs. Carton and by James Harlan as Watts, the butler. Mary Manuel played the part of Mrs. Barrington very well. There's a French Club, a Dramatic Art Club, A Girl Reserve Club, and many other organizations in the High School. We want a Commercial Club! And so in October in answer to the above cries we called a meeting and organized the first Commercial Club in Miamisburg High School. The fifteen members who compose the club, The Charter Members, as they proudly call themselves, elected the following officers to carry them through their first strenuous year: Gordan Hadley, President: Helen Rhoades, Vice-president: Gladys Isabel, Secretary: Thelma Ellis, Treasurer. , The Constitution framed by the committee, Flora Eckhart, Chair- man, Helen Rhoades, Gladys Isbel, Jane Weaver, Gives as the club purpose: Promote interest in commercial work. The Constitution pro- vides for the admission of members, election of officers and their duties, rules and regulations of attendance, in fact, it provides every- thing a good constitution should provide. The club pins have the letters M. H. S. C. C. which means: Miamis- burg High School Commercial Club. The pins are made of gold. THE HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA The High School Orchestra is very fortunate to have as its leader, Mr. Stanley Lesher, who has the distinction of being director of the orchestra at the Victory Theater, Dayton, Ohio. Under his able in- struction the orchestra has so far advanced that they played for the Lyceum Course, the Farmer's Institute, the Senior Play, as well as the Cantata Carmen, which was presented May 9. Nine violins, and three cornets help to make this orchestra a suc- cess. Two saxaphones, three clarinets, and the solitary base-violin, a drum, and piano contribute their share. These willing musicians practice every Wednesday morning and with the instruction of their capable leader prepare for coming recitals. A few new members have joined this year and are very welcome as will be any others who may wish to join in the future. This organization will suffer greatly at the loss of five members by graduation. The orchestra is always willing and ready to play whenever called upon and deserves to be appreciated for its service xx, X MMT O -1- T rf? il Yrxyz Lf 'll Q YT? l -5 . ll 7 o.R. These discussions Hg 985' y are usually led by some member who chooses his material from several Hi-Y manuals on such topics. ,Tir The annual Football Banquet was sponsored by the Hi-Y again W , 'lf this year. Floyd Stahl, Stiver's coach, served as principal speaker and Xi Bert Keiser as toastmaster. As has been the usual custom, letters were Ni 'V KI' l given out by Coach Wright to those football men who earned them. 'i ll ' X l ' 2 54 W WW X X ow . Q 'W - - - 1. WZ .QSDQNJ-A ' .. To excite greater interest the girls tried a modern hay ride followed by cheese and bacon sandwiches, along with apples, mingled With songs and pep. Miss Smith and Mrs. Neff went in partnership to sponsor the group. With sixty members the club staged a magazine campaign during December. The yearly custom of giving the poor children a Christmas Party in the Gym was continued again this year. During March and April the club sold candy, cakes, potted and cut flowers at The Star Cleaners. In addition to this the girls took orders for Easter flowers at Easter time. Several very interesting discussions were held by the club in the form of a Question Box. All questions considered were discussed among the members to help each girl solve any problem which confronted her. Dear Graduate, Now that you are leaving good old Alma Mater, you are beginning to peer eagerly into the future. Five, ten years from now, life will become a business, living an oc- cupation, and you will have made your mark in the world. Then recollections of school friendships and school mem- ories Will begin to crowd upon you. In those happy moments of retrospection, you will go to a place of keeping for treasured pieces, and bring forth a bit of verse, a fragment of an old school song, your class picture. Then, and only then, will you realize how those priceless possessions hold forever captive the joyous spirit of those never-to-be-forgotten school days of Life's morning. An,d, my dear graduate, it is my only wish that to those mementos, you add just one fleeting thought of your ever loyal and constant friend, 5-23-30. .2546 K J 59 THE MIRUS To Look Well is to Succeed Experienced Operators and Modern Equipment assure you of the Best Service VANITY BEAUTY SHOP MRS.
