Established in 1809 under the provisions of a purchase of federal land by John Cleves Symmes, Miami was the second state institution of higher learning to be established west of the Allegheny Mountains . . . today she boasts more than a century of active history beginning with actual collegiate instruction in the autumn of 1824, under the Reverend Robert Hamilton Bishop, D.D., the first president.
