After much controversy the site of the El university was selected at Oxford. Due to a lack of funds and buildings E the college did not open immediately, and for several years a Select School and E then a Grammar School was established and maintained for the young people of the community. It was not until 1824 that sufficient funds were accumulated I E and buildings erected to justify the formal opening of the university, and the real E1 history of Miami may be said to begin with that date. Because of its central ig, location and also due to the character of the settlers in this region, Miami soon 1 .,'A l . M became one of the leading institutions of the middle west. Its power and influence in this period cannot be too highly estimated, for it occupied the foremost position in educational circles west of the Alleghenies. From its halls at this time went LL forth many men later destined to become famous ifn the legislative halls of the State and nation, in the pulpit, and at the bar. Also, during this period were founded three Greek letter societies, Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Theta, and Sigma Chi, which later developed into great national bodies numbering their membership among i 531 the thousands. . fi! Mil Eg At the time of the Civil war Miami men answered their countries call in over- whelming numbers so that the college was compelled to close. Many a Miami man in this great struggle fought against a former college associate or friend, for I her sons were about evenly divided in their allegiance to their homeland, North or South. While the University remained closed a private school was conducted lm Trufant and Marsh, who had been instructors in the lil tl If - 'H f g-,if llJ - reopened her doors and the history of the New T than the Old, and yet carrying with it the influences by the Old, begins with this date. Since that time career of usefulness and service. Y years of life, Miami 1S stronger than ever in resources, Attendance is constantly on the upward i Qganstantly being erected, the faculty is being increased, and in all ways possible is Miami exerting herself to stands for. For the future we predict an era of even lei of which no one can correctly foretell. PAGE TWENTY-EIGHT
