It represents the fundamental objectives for which high schools are instituted. Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in that they recognize special abilities, skills, or talents, but the National Honor Society looks upon the educated student as a total product of education, excelling in the four greatest dimensions of life: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. The symbols are explained as: Character - White is the color chosen to symbolize Character, for White is the Composite of many colors. Character is the sum of many qualities which united make man. Scholarship - is evidenced by an overall high school average of 3.5 in a grading system in which 4.0 represents the highest level of achievement. Gold symbolizes Scholarship as the golden glow of Schol- arship is only a faint reflection of the splendor or life enriched by learning. Leadership - is demonstrated by a high degree of initiated in classroom activities, holding high school offices, etc. Purple symbolizes Leadership as it is the color chosen by the leaders of all time. Service - Service to others gives the highest form of happiness. Red symbolizes the unselfish devotion which gives itself to the service of the nation, the school, and the individual. 97 DECA I believe in the future which I am planning for myself in the field of distribution, and in the opportunities which my vocation offers. I believe in fulfilling the highest measure of service to my vocation, my fellow beings, my country and my God - that by so doing, I will be rewarded with personal satisfaction and mater- ial wealth. I believe in the democratic philosophies of private enterprise and competition, and in the freedoms of this nation - that these philosophies allow for the fullest development of my indi- vidual abilities. I believe that by doing my best to live according to these high principles, I will be of greater service both to myself and to mankind. Jr. 98 ROW 1 - (L to R) D. Michael, R. West, P. Evans, B.
