FOSTER, Principal The principal manages the school — organizing and administering. He is directly responsible to the Superintendent for the organization, administration, curriculum, public relations, building and grounds, teacher assignment, and other activities and programs within the channels of approved policies and practices which have been established. In an attempt to provide the educational opportunities for all students within the school, the principal keeps the school program in balance and moving forward. Through scheduling of classes, assigning duties and responsibilities to others on the staff, improving instructional procedures, maintaining a guidance program and assuming other areas of responsibility, the head of the high school hopes to provide the leadership and management for operating a school to meet the needs of today’s students. The Assistant Principal has many duties in the areas of administration and guidance. The responsibilities most common include attendance, discipline, and other areas of pupil need and con- cern. All efforts are directed toward making the school experience as valua- ble and meaningful for each student as possible. Degrees: Bachelor of Science — Wilmington College Master of Education — Wittenberg University 18 MR. RONALD K. THOMPSON, Assistant Principal Many opportunities to be of service to the girls of our school enter into the daily duties of a Dean of Girls. She may help make adjustments in troubled situations; she mav be of assistance in case of illness or injury; she may help establish good relations between pupil and teacher or pupil and pupil. The Dean is also responsi- ble for attaining the best possible rate of school and attendance. In the effort to develop well disciplined and well adjusted girls there is a great challenge to perform the variety of duties of a Dean. MRS. LOIS KYLE ADAMS Muskingum College Bachelor of Arts Miami University Wilmington College Ohio University Dean of Girls The guidance counselor endeavors to assist students in understanding how1 to develop and train their abilities to achieve academic success; to help them attain better understanding of personal strengths and limitations; to identify interests; and to aid in planning for and reaching realistic goals so that their lives may be fruitful and enjoyable. The counselor lends a helping hand to students, through conferences, to aid them in finding a better understanding of themselves in relation to the rapidly developing and changing world. MRS. MARGARET S. DOWLER Wilmington College Bachelor of Science in Education Wittenburg University Master of Education Guidance Counselor As the secretary of Miami Trace High School, I find I have many duties. Each morning I chart all the daily absentees, before beginning other duties of the day, such as caring for all the correspondence for Mr. Foster, sorting the mail, running the duplicating and mimeographing machines, making out and sending all the eligibility lists for all sports activities, and answering the phone and intercom. I am also responsible for keeping records of the money handled through the school office. 19 MRS. ELOISE M. REES Foreign Language MRS. JANET LOUDNER Degree: Bachelor of Science — Miami University The primary objectives in the study of Latin are to develop the ability to read and understand Latin; to increase knowl- edge of English grammar and vocabulary; to establish a good basis for the study of a modern foreign language; to develop correct habits of reflective thinking; to appreciate the influ- ence of Roman civilization on western civilization. The primary aims of the study of a modern foreign lan- guage is to develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills in this language; to study the culture of another country in order to enrich a pupil’s general knowledge. Science indirectly creates new forces affecting politics, economics, industry, health, and the very nature of our society. It is becoming increasingly evident that people who do not have a background in science w ill be excluded from the intellectual life of the time, and blindly buffeted by the forces that give direction and meaning to modern living. WELLMAN Distributive Education MR. GORDON LEMMON Ohio Slate I nivcrsity Bachelor of Science MR. EDWARD VOLKER Ohio Stale University Bachelor of Arts Master of Arts Distributive Education is a vocational program that trains students for careers in retailing, wholesaling, or the service occupations. It is a cooperative program in that students attend regular classes in the morning hours and receive on-the-job training in the afternoon hours. A teacher-coordinator brings the school and business to- gether to provide practical education and is prepared to correlate the work activities of his students with in-school studies. The Miami Trace Art Department hoped to provide the opportunity for the student to acquire some of the communication skills that are inherent in the visual arts. This presupposes an awareness of the limitations and possibilities of the individual development and of the media to be used. The level of creativity achieved is enhanced by this competancy. A review of the student work comparing initial with current efforts indicates that this goal is being accomplished. Physical Education MRS. JANET McCARTY Morehead State College Bachelor of Arts. MR. DONALD STAGGS Cedarville College Bachelor of Science Marshall University Xavier University Physical Education strives to instill in each student the desire to be more physically fit and to teach them the methods of achieving this. We cover many activities which they enjoy now and some which will carry over into later life. 23 The Industrial Arts curriculum is designed to meet the needs and wants of students. We are offering classes in drafting, wood, metal, electricity, automotives, machine shop, and building construction which will benefit the student planning to enter college, trade school or industry upon graduation from high school. Industrial Arts teaches not only the industrial processes, but also consumer knowledge and appreciation. It is the philosphy of the Industrial Arts Department that our courses are not programmed for the training of experienced machinists or draftsmen. It is our goal to give the students a fundamental understanding of the many industrial processes. From this knowledge he will be able to select an area of his interest and find employment after graduation. Industrial Arts MR. DOUGLAS JAMES ilmington College MR. We encourage the students to understand the structure of our government, its development, testing and preservation, based upon the moral and spiritual riches inherited as an American citizen. There is a great underlying purpose in life that the student must be helped to discover. We teach the students to live effectively in a democratic society by establishing and maintaining a democratic atmos- phere in the classroom. We try to develop the ability to use our freedoms wisely and a deeper appreciation for the privilege of living in a democ- racy. As for acting ability the Jr. class had plenty. In the combined class play with the seniors, the Jrs. had two of the five leads. In sports they excelled also. The National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society is attained by having an accumula- tive point average of 3.50 or better and by evidencing the qualities of leadership, character, and service. The installation ceremonies are very impressive. At the beginning of the cere- mony the present members of the NHS make the candidates known and then lead them to the stage. After each candidate has been instructed on the qualities of Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service, they are given the oath of the Society. After the oath has been given to the group, each candidate’s name is called — the candidate then comes forward placing his candle at the base of the flaming torch and then the candidates receive their certificate of induction in the National Honor Society. The symbols may best be explained as: Mr. Tom Vrettos Character — the evaluation of one’s personality guided by the influences that control one’s life. Leadership — demonstrating a high degree of initiative in class room activities, holding high school offices, committee chairmanships, and other positions — contributing ideas which may be incorporated in the civic life of the school exhibiting the type of leadership which actively and wholesomely influences toward the qualities of leadership in others. 98 Scholarship — is interpreted in terms of true aca- demic excellence as evidenced by an overall high school average of 3.5 in a grading system in which 4.0 represents the highest level of achieve- ment. Service — service to others is the highest form of happiness — it is part payment of man’s debt to society for its advantages and protection — serv- ice enriches the heart of the bestower and supplies the needs of the recipient. The student, in turn, learns to use the library more effectively and often expresses a satisfaction gained from participating in the daily library work program. In some cases it has decided our history. Skill in debating has often been the margin of success for an individual or a cause. Ability to debate may be learned in many ways, but one way to learn the technique and also to practice it, is to take part in academic debating.
