7 tcfruz Section, (£Cei44, l oCu KC I 76e JPtteuHc ScAool DiA icct February 4, 1960, the Miami Trace Board sold the building bond issue of $1, 652, 500 to the Ohio Company of Columbus, Ohio. The architect, John L. Kline, immediately completed in time for use September, 1962. In June, 1961, W. J. Hilty resigned his position as County Superintendent of Fayette County Schools to ac- cept a similar position in Highland County. Roger O. Hoffman was appointed to succeed Mr. Hilty and is presently serving as County Superintendent of Schools of Fayette County. George R. Groh, Jr., was appointed by the Miami Trace Board to serve as thq first principal of the new Miami Trace High School. Mr. Groh was formerly principal of Staunton and Wilson elementary schools and Jeffersonville High School. On July 1, 1955, the effective date of the original Miami Trace merger, Mrs. Senath Thompson was appointed Clerk and still serves. The following August, W. W. Boyer was appointed Executive Head. Upon the should- ers of Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Boyer rested the responsibility of a great deal of the planning and accounting in connection with the construction of the high school building and implementation of the program. With the completion and occupancy of the Miami Trace High School Building, Fayette County becomes the first county in Ohio to have complete consolidation with one high school for the rural area of the county. This distinction is a credit to the educational leadership of school officials and the foresight of the people of the county. 3 TPCccupU In the middle of the 18th century Ohio was almost entirely covered with forests of oak, walnut, sycamore, maple, chestnut, and beech with an undergrowth of lesser shrubs of dogwood, wild plum, crab apple, redbud, papaw, blueberry, and raspberry all intertwined with heavy hanging grapevines. Through this virgin forest occasionally led a long, cool aisle breaking out upon a maze of tall swamp grass in such clearing, as the Pickaway, Sandusky, and Darby Plains, or the Great Buffalo Swamp (Buckeye Lake) and the Black Swamps. These paths through the dense woods, that later served the Indians and pioneers, were made by animals in search of food, salt licks, or fresh water. When the Mound Builders and Indians came to what is now Ohio they found, ready made, a road system which would serve for their land travel. These numerous Indian paths or trails called traces (Todd's Trace, Zane's Trace) transversed the state in various directions. These trails were the highways of the lndians--the thoroughfares over which they journeyed on their business of the chase or of war, just as people now pursue their travel and traffic over graded roads. Indians did not wander aim- lessly through the woods, but followed these well defined paths. One such path was the Miami Trace. A trace is a way followed or a path taken. Thus, appropriately, our new school should be called Miami Trace. From the forest creatures who established it-- Through the Indian warriors who named it-- To modern man who has improved it-- The name Miami Trace” has a glorious past, present, and future. 'l 6t e St4tt4Uc4 The building is constructed in the form of a T with a first floor lobby and a second floor lobby separating the three wings. The two-story classroom wing extends to the west. This area is constructed of precast con- crete beams, columns, and floor slabs for both the second floor and the roof. In forming the floor of the sec- ond floor level, the large precast concrete beams are cantilevered out over the precast columns. The canti- lever construction creates a sheltered bus loading dock at ground level. The use of window-wall type con- struction insures ample natural light in the classroom area of both first and second floors. The gymnasium and auditorium wings are constructed of face brick and masonry with precast columns and beams supporting the roof areas. The lobby and administration area, located in the exact center of the T, are also constructed of precast columns, beams and slabs. There are 12 classrooms, an art room, speech room, library, study hall, two general science rooms, a chemistry laboratory, a physics laboratory, two science preparation rooms, two biology laboratories, a four- room commercial suite, a two-room home economics suite, an administrative area, a vocal music room, band room, three vocal or instrumental music practice rooms, two teacher lounges, a mechanical drawing room, wood shop, metal shop, photographic dark room, graphic arts room, foundry, and auto mechanics room, a vocational agriculture area consisting of shop and classrooms, a kitchen, dining room, gymnasium and locker rooms, and an auditorium. The building is amply supplied with office areas for departmental heads, storage and janitorial supply rooms. The building is located on a plot of approximately 27.6 acres which also provides ample area for a foot- ball playing field, football practice field and a baseball diamond. An unusual feature is the football stadium of about 2600 seating capacity, located on the roof of the Vocational-Agricultural-Cafeteria area. The building is completely equipped in all areas with the exception of the graphic arts room. Future plans include equipping this area. The cost per square feet is $13.03 which does not include the equipment which totals $99, 537.19. The total cost which includes the site, building, and equipment, etc., is $1,901,413.56. The first contracts - precast concrete and Mod-U-Wall - were let on February 10, 1961. On April 13, 1961, the general contract, heating and plumbing contract, and the electrical contract were let. All other contracts were let within a short time. Actual construction started after April 13. 9 @ou tty Suft€ni tte uCe tt Scdoolt To be first in almost anything car- ries a great deal of honor and prestige. As the years go by, I'm sure the mem- bers of the Class of 1963 of the Miami Trace High School will look back at this year with pride for having been the first class to cross the stage of the Miami Trace High School to receive their di- plomas. Being first also carries certain re- sponsibilities and this first is no excep- tion. Each graduating Senior has certain skills and talents; how they are developed and used will serve as an example for graduating classes through the years to come. May your school and community look with pride on each of you as you further develop your particular abilities in adult life. ROGER O. BOYER Bachelor of Arts Cedarville College Master of Arts Ohio State University After thirty years of service with the public schools of the State of Ohio, it has been a satisfying experience to work in the Miami Trace School Dis- trict for the past eight years. To work and plan with my colleagues and the citizens of this school district and the building of a new high school has been richly rewarding. Although much has been accomplished on the secondary level much remains to be accom- plished on the elementary level. I am sure the cit- izens of the school district will attack the problems of the future with the same zest and spirit of coop- eration in the future as in the past. My sincerest congratulations to the Senior Class of 1963 and to all of the pupils of the Miami Trace High School for their contributions to the success of this great venture. As these doors opened, a new era in education was launched in our school district. Quickly the days have sped past and the first graduating class of our new school moves on to take its place in our community. During this time many changes have taken place. At first we were all getting acquainted with our new building and with one another. A new way, the Miami Trace Way, became a reality. Many honors have been awarded the students of Miami Trace this year. This first year has been a good year, but let us always strive to be better. The Miami Trace Way must always stand for the best_._ Good fortune, health and happiness to each member of our 1963 graduating class. 12 s444i fa tt 'UttccficiC This has been a good year! Many op- portunities for growth have been available to you, our student body. It has been most rewarding to see you set high scholastic standards in the classroom. Then, too, it has been gratifying to observe our school spirit grow and to note the excellent repre- sentation given us by our extracurricular groups. To you, the graduating class and the underclassmen, each day brings a challenge for you to become more self-directing and capable of purposeful living. GUY M. Ill Captain Dick Evans has presented Queen Janet with the crown. This year our very pretty and equally popular home- coming queen was chosen from five nominees of the Sen- ior class. The entire student body assembled to vote on which of these charming girls would be chosen. It re- sulted in the selection of Janet Hare for our queen and Penny Noble for the Senior attendant. The other attendants were chosen by the members of their individual classes. The Junior class chose Sharon Huff; the Sophomore class, Carol Noble; and the Freshman class, Marty Knost. The evening of October 12 was wet and rainy but the rain stopped before game time and our team upset the Franklin Heights Falcons 12-8 for a grand homecoming evening.
