Left, Colonel Burton, right, Lieutenant Joe Giddens, of the USMRC unit Highlights The Dade county public school system's first militar reserve training ro- gram at the high school level began operations at Technical High schoolpon February 2, 1953, with a total of 162 boys registered for the training. Because of conflicts in schedules, total membership stood at 134 at the close of the first month of training, and these 134 boys were in to stay. The perfonnance of these boys is more than satisfactory, and their enthusi- asm for militar training is unbounded, said Lt. Col. Robert A. Burton, lr., instructor in mihtary science and tactics for Tech High. Durin the first two months, members of the corps received training in infantry grill, military courtesy and discipline, military sanitation, hygiene and first aid. They also had classes in weapons and heard talks by Major Theodore A. Koschler, Air Force Reserve, on Air Force support to ground trou s. Early in April, the rifle range on the third floor of the LHVS building went into consu-uction, and later in April the corps began rifle marksmanship and ractice. , P Military training is a credit course, for which corps members will receive credit toward graduation, as well as toward college entrance. Should the boys go into service, Tech High will transfer their credit and a record of the military training received at Tech to whatever units they may enter.
