Col. Robert A. Burton, jr., ln' structor, Military Science and Tac- tics, Tech High 1 The Browning automatic rifle interests Herb Katz, Howard Allard and james Thompson V52 5 Phil Shea and Yale Mosk demonstrate inspection of arms. Left, Colonel Burton, right, Lieutenant Joe Giddens, of the USMRC unit Highlights The Dade county public school system's first militar reserve training ro- gram at the high school level began operations at Technical High schoolpon February 2, 1953, with a total of 162 boys registered for the training. Because of conflicts in schedules, total membership stood at 134 at the close of the first month of training, and these 134 boys were in to stay. The perfonnance of these boys is more than satisfactory, and their enthusi- asm for militar training is unbounded, said Lt. Col. Robert A. Burton, lr., instructor in mihtary science and tactics for Tech High. Durin the first two months, members of the corps received training in infantry grill, military courtesy and discipline, military sanitation, hygiene and first aid. They also had classes in weapons and heard talks by Major Theodore A. Koschler, Air Force Reserve, on Air Force support to ground trou s. Early in April, the rifle range on the third floor of the LHVS building went into consu-uction, and later in April the corps began rifle marksmanship and ractice. , P Military training is a credit course, for which corps members will receive credit toward graduation, as well as toward college entrance. Should the boys go into service, Tech High will transfer their credit and a record of the military training received at Tech to whatever units they may enter. fi . . T. The girls themselves said they looked like an Easter parade in their Sunday best. Not only does the Apparel shop instructor teach the girls to design, cut and sew clothing according to garment manufac- turers' formulas.', She also teaches them to recognize smart lines in dress, to wear their own clothes well and to keep them immaculate, one of the great secrets of that well dressed look. Through the Dental Clinic, students in Dental Assisting meet and work with the public while observing and assisting the 120 Dade county dentists who each give one day monthly to caring for the needs of indigent people certified to receive dental work. The Clinic is thoroughly equipped, with nine complete dental units, every modern instrument and all the su plies that are to be found in the finest dental offices, and all of this is of course at the command of eacli participating member of the Dental Research group. 1 Dr. Lcmmrd S Turm-r h . , c znrmzm of flu- Anmlgzuu and l,0l'C1'lillll group. pm' forms an apic-m-clonxy as C0-cllalirmam lla-nry Crm-vu Cplaicl shirtl nml Drs, Wendell Wllvtstmw, lim-n llolzinson, lliraun P. Selley, linotypes Highlights This vear the Print shop has been of inestimable assistance to all departments in the school and to other schools in the county, having lent their talents to printing tickets, programs, tags and announcements for the various school functions during the year. The dance pro- grams for both the Tech High Coronation Ball and the Key Club's Sweetheart Dance were exceptiona pieces of printing. The AM Print shop did a bang-up job on the football programs and athletic post ers, and the whole shop did a com- petent job on Yearbook and school paper projects, meeting their deadlines as usual. Seven of the AM shop boys are members of the class of june '53, and five all-day trade students have taken 'obs in the trade. The 1953 season was the best Tech has ever had. with 12 wins and seven losses. The first game with jackson, which the Generals won by only three points, was a moral victory for the Blue Devils. The second game with Cables, which Tech won, was perhaps the highlight of the year. The boys played excellent ball and were complimented time and time again by both daily papers. When Manuel East, one of the tean1's mainstays, was out of several games because of an injury, his teammates worked doubly hard to make up for his absence-it was a great year! l5HSlUBllll Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech Tech SI.
