Highlights While Radio Communica- tions shop is devoted entirely to obtaining commercial Ra- diotelephone and Radio tele- graph licenses, the work is not confined entirely to sit- ting at a desk, wearing head-- phones and copying code. There was the pleasant matter of a field trip, when the boys went out to get first- hand experience with com- munication procedures, using equipment which they had themselves constructed. Over hills, down in hollows, from ship to shorefthe ship being a canoe or two - the boys practiced and found it good. After class hours, the boys devote time to their ham radio station W4JOX, with a contact made with Hamburg, Germany, during the spring as the highlight of the year. Since they believe in preventive medicine, the boys make constant checks to catch trouble at the symp- tom stage. These daily checks, coupled with field trips to ob- serve large commercial installations of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, give the boys a variety of experience and knowledges that speed up acquisition of skills in the shop. Refrigeration Shop was organized in 1945 by Mr. H. A. Peresett, present instructor, in a small classroom on the eleventh floor. l-lquipment at that time consisted of three household units and a small supply ot' tools. Since then the shop has moved to the sixth floor, where it occupies a space nearly five times that of the original location. This makes it possible for the shop to have separate class and shop rooms and a separate tool room containing all types of refrigeration tools and equipment. Shop equipment now consists of 22 small refrigeration units and three air conditioners, two of which are used to cool the classroom. For the many experiments carried on by this shop, it maintains a walk-in cooler in which the temperature may be lowered below zero degrees. I ,I ,ff 9 f
