Hard work and long practices after school did not produce a winning season as the team won 3, lost 7. Victories included decisive wins over Miami High, Mays, and Columbus. To beat Miami High 6-O, senior quarterback Randy Adair connected with Mark Ghezzi, who was in the end zone. The score came late in the second quarter after neither team could muster a profitable drive. Southwest squeezed by the Panthers by one point, but the next week the team registered its second win of the season by beating Columbus 31-6. During the game, all five touchdowns were scored by Randy Adair. For this outstanding performance, he received the Miami Herald's Player ofthe Week award. Getting another award was offensive guard John Tucker, who was placed on the All-County First Team. Mays High this year was admitted to Class Double A. Palmetto defeated Mays 28-14 to compile the team's third win and the last victory of the school year. varsity football 175
