'iling sophomore autobiographies in students' cumulative folders, Mrs. oan Preuss hesitates momentarily before making a final comment. inior English teacher Kim Overstreet reminds students to be exact hen working with the new structural approach to English sentences. English Dept. Phases Tenth Graders Along with junior and senior classes, the sophomore English classes experienced the new five-phase pattern. Each of the five phases, designated to fulfill the capa- bilities of individual students, looked at language in a new light as students studied the logic of transformational grammar. Hoping to equip students with tools to handle problems eventually faced in adult life, teachers utilized a writing percep- tion unit in instructing pupils. Fresh dimensions in communication showed students the importance of uncovering and exploring the world of the written language through experience-centered ac- tivities. For instance, pupils blindfolded for 15 minutes gained a sense impression and tried to convey their thoughts in para- graphs. Courses in Contemporary Literature, together with World Literature, Vocabu- lary, and Mythology continued to be en- hancing electives in the department. J. Trantham L. 5 Mrs. Aide Helbig, Spanish teacher, strives for instantaneous response to oral questions from the alert foreign language students Foreign Language Soundproofs Classrooms Because in today's world it is necessary to be alert and responsive to people everywhere, Foreign Language teachers selected the slogan, Language is the key to new horizons. To help develop within pupils an understanding for foreign cultures and languages, extracurricular activities were created for the French, German, Latin, and Spanish courses. Students worked in newly soundproofed classes, developing comprehension as they used audiolingual tools. Selected from these language classes were students who journeyed to local and state meetings to compete against other schools. . It ia tw 4 f f , fe if 4 ,W 1 , , W? W ,f , , ,t l , , 4, A.
