The Scrap Drive The Scrap iron drive this Semester was sponsored by the Key Club and senior Hi-Y. Future Farmers of America sold the scrap to a junk dealer, and the money col- lected was used to hnance the inter-com- munications system. Mr. Charles O'Connor and Mr. T. W. Caruthers excused boys from classes to collect scrap. Trucks to go after the junk and bring it to school and then haul it away were provided. junk was collected from all parts of town. Total Scrap gathered was: 10,000 pounds of tin: Xt ton of iron: 320 pounds of ragsg 3 tons of rubber: 100 pounds of carpet: and 100 pounds of cotton. Total sum of money collected was 33277.50 Everything from ice cream freezers and old alarm clocks to automobile bodies and useless refrigerators was to be seen in the scrap pile. What I C1111 Personally Do to flirt thi' Scrap Drifuv My first duty as a tfjunior Commando is to meet the requirements of the scrap metal drive set forth by the Key Club and Hi-Y. These requirements are a pound a day per person in school. A pound a day is little compared to what our older broth- ers and our fathers are giving. This metal will go into planes, guns, tanks, ships, and ammunition. One more plane, or even a bullet at the crucial point of a battle, might turn the tide in our favor. just stop and think what one small piece of scrap could do. I can do more than my share. If I am called from classes, I can keep my work up to date by getting the assignment from someone and having my work in on time. This isn't much when you think of the fortitude of the people of Stalingrad, of the courage of our boys on Corregidor, or the hardships of the British who have endured more than we can imagine. I shall do all I can and not grumble. Certainly, if we win the prize money, I will get from it many benefits.
