The Scrap Drive The Scrap iron drive this Semester was sponsored by the Key Club and senior Hi-Y. Future Farmers of America sold the scrap to a junk dealer, and the money col- lected was used to hnance the inter-com- munications system. Mr. Charles O'Connor and Mr. T. W. Caruthers excused boys from classes to collect scrap. Trucks to go after the junk and bring it to school and then haul it away were provided. junk was collected from all parts of town. Total Scrap gathered was: 10,000 pounds of tin: Xt ton of iron: 320 pounds of ragsg 3 tons of rubber: 100 pounds of carpet: and 100 pounds of cotton. Total sum of money collected was 33277.50 Everything from ice cream freezers and old alarm clocks to automobile bodies and useless refrigerators was to be seen in the scrap pile. What I C1111 Personally Do to flirt thi' Scrap Drifuv My first duty as a tfjunior Commando is to meet the requirements of the scrap metal drive set forth by the Key Club and Hi-Y. These requirements are a pound a day per person in school. A pound a day is little compared to what our older broth- ers and our fathers are giving. This metal will go into planes, guns, tanks, ships, and ammunition. One more plane, or even a bullet at the crucial point of a battle, might turn the tide in our favor. just stop and think what one small piece of scrap could do. I can do more than my share. If I am called from classes, I can keep my work up to date by getting the assignment from someone and having my work in on time. This isn't much when you think of the fortitude of the people of Stalingrad, of the courage of our boys on Corregidor, or the hardships of the British who have endured more than we can imagine. I shall do all I can and not grumble. Certainly, if we win the prize money, I will get from it many benefits. Hut, can I take these benefits with a clear conscience if I have not contributed my bit to aid my government in its all-out scrap drive? -PAUL BIRDSONG Give Your Scrap Como and give us all your svrapa l'm'lr' Sam will liuila' a lioat. Their aims are to cheer the gallant football boys on to victory: to in- still school spirit: and to represent the rchool to the best of their ability. They train the future cheerleaders and practice yells throughout the summer. When school is in session they practice at least three times a week, so that their precision will be perfect for the pep meetings and foot- ball games. Intramurals were played each week be- tween the girls who were interested in any particular sport. Another extra curricular activity for the physical education program was engaged in by a horse-back riding group, which met weekly and rode at the North Miami Riding Academy. The newest addition to the clubs organ- ized to help in the war effort was Super 4 Ingrid Olsen high scorer in the physical fitness program. Frou! 70112, lefl fo right: S. .-Xsua, J. Berryman, A. Women Acting for Better Service, better known as the HSWABSI' This club com- missions the officers exactly as the WA.-XCS and the WAVES and other womens aux- iliary units do. Their ofticers were Colonel, Virginia Hamiltong Major, Shirley Hamil- ton: Captain, Dorothy Hudson: and Lieu- tenant, Margaret Richardson. A few weeks after commissioning their officers the SWABS enlistments began, and the ranks were swelled with thirty-eight Ubuck privatesv who had opportunities to become officers. Some of the activities of the SWABS seemed to be training young Commandos. Obstacle races, tumbling, marching, and calisthenics were but a few of the sports proposed. The purpose of the SWABS is to in- crease physical titness of the girls, and to interest them in community war effort. This This club is sponsored by Mrs. Leta Rey- nolds, physical education teacher. 31 roufm' Sfhool mw umm 1 1 11 n 1 X 0 u NL1 f 1 nt 115 f 1 Pl COININUIIIC mon xx 511 m 1 11 um 111011 1 nc L 1 n L 13 ff 5 1 rc ff lk f x . 5 N . the H 1 m un 11 1 1 ff mu mr x5 lu 1 1 611110 xxhlch should ln 111111111 to 1 4 101 If r ,N lx .5 nl 'll PC JINIINILN 100111 1 6 ll Y XX flN1XX iw n 5 xmff 001 XXII turn 'fl f 5 mm 15 Jecn 11 11 mm ml Il nn ff J It Lommlclc XXII 1 Nmux 411055 rr - mx Lim oc Xen 115 lt mm Ilfllll 1 N k x ockors 16111 X PXKI111lllNlU1Cl0'1 K ire as J en 5 N111 on r0mrw16 1 I 1 wt S6 611K I Jmmr Qlll I0 n ore work will be 11011. QUILL and SCROLL Editing the t'Globe and sponsoring Quill and Scroll have been the jobs of the Globe staff for this past year. Few who read the finished product know the actual pro- cess of editing a paper. From editor-in-chief down to re- porter, each staff member has some particular and necessary function in publishing this school paper, whether it is securing the story, headline- writing, soliciting ads, page make-up, proofreading, copy- reading, rewrite, typing, mak- ing posters, doing artwork, handing out assignments, running errands, taking copy to the printerls, or just being an idea-man. Not all students who take journalism are members of Quill and Scroll, the National journalistic Honor Society, but most of those who attain some special achievement in journalistic work and who have had 1,000 lines printed, receive memberships in this organization. Members of Jackson's chapter of the Quill and Scroll are: Carolyn Cook, joan Glerum, Reggie Schil- ling, Rosemarie Martucci, Jennie Degard, Bernie Freed, Charlie Sturrup, John Kav- anaugh, jack Wood, and Ann Brady. 2 Y 6919 The Band The band under the fllI'8CIlOI1 of Nlr Stanley Dullmba has done qulte 1 b1t of work th1s past year In years past the band took part ln many muslc contests but due to the cl1f11cult1es 1n transportatlon the con tests have been canceled ln the place of the contests, the band has staged four monthly concerts whxch take place the last Sunday of every month Hand members, ln dClClltlOI1 to playmg for all assemblles and taklng part 1n the 1942 Orange Bowl Classxc have sponsored a muslcal show ent1tled 9p1r1t of the L Q X Nlany of thxs years members are xery young, but the mus1c1ansh1p of the group IS excellent ln splte of the loss of a number of members last semester There are 64 members 1n the hlgh school band and 94 1n the elementary band 954' 662 lop C,1kL's GLPE CLLB Ro L One B Garlm C xltllilflll, ohnson, B Nltlxnlu E Km F Tutktr L Ptxrktr, L Pwr r M lmnandef C1 onlno 4 r, 'N Ill Rofv. 111.0 Lots 5 Ptttrson, Nurn, B Smtnn, X Ko 105 Roxil, M 'wr tr D Htlbt L xvflgglf, t x L 111 D S B Snnth B Currln 1 'Nl Tllllflll V 'Vhddtt 1 X1 1111 Ro L lhzee 'Nlxss Sparrenlxrfnr, won P tr trum ts bllllf o neon 'Nl Prrrx P 'Nlullrulx l' PlXlZ1,b Drux Cxllstlfstbll LL and Ro tr L QLILLH J 1 ,I ohnson B Mor Ill, L X Mitt uns H I.1SSLI'lll'1Il Rau Four N1 Qouptr lN1 lVIapp1n, HLllilllXX A Blum, M NUUII, VVtnslcs xxflllltlllli S YVttl1cr1n ton NI Hathtotk NI MII 'N Lux 'VI 'Vhlton 'NI Vlnnn, R Sues l' llmton, B Starboro R Dlctrlt Roffom Bun Rom One X Pearce J Tapp B Dtl Nlthllltfl D Xlburs,,N1 Poster, Xlllgood Rmks 9 Bucs F Garrttt l Ehrllth ou no Puckett D Wurntr W Schofic c Cluton l- Kothlcr B D1x1s, R Wllson, V Tozzo, Prmtll P CJIFXIH Nl Broun D Golden rg Huts S 1, l' DtVSulf H Wllllllll asstttr X 'Nl1n1t,D Loses Rau Three S url R c utr I mmgt X P1cr1tt1n1 Osmournt VVrxe, Tlmrpt Macltlox, C fstt r, l' Bt rglnan, C urrx, Moore, Hosron Q V1ugl11n Rofu Fam R Vamt, G I'urntr l Pirkcr, B Kxrsthtnhaum, B Hxllhautr autr glll th Plattn, R Du Breu1 , Xshlcs, B NICGTJXK V Hlllbauer, R Clrptnter Hand f' mg p v fl ww 4 1 f . 1 1, . .13 4 L W lkf of iff ' ' .J H r . 1 l l ,, H ,. 1 ' A - . We have worked hard. Whether or not we have suc- ceeded the reader must judge. With our work we have mixed social activities such as a dance and Z1 theatre party. So, it has not been all work and no play. We all have had fun in publishing Old Hickory. Editor in Chief, Paul Birdsongz .-lss't Ed., Mary Louise Smithg Bus.
