Our education is the focal point of our development. When we hear the word school the first mental picture that pops into our mind is books, However, we should also recognize the fact that there is another equally important facet to our education. Evidently our teachers and parents recognize this, for they have always encouraged us to participate in activities outside the classroom. Such things as our student council, classroom clubs, speech activities, and sports should help us to realize that to succeed in life we must necessarily learn to live with people. The scho0l's purpose today is not only to educate a person with book knowledge, but also to prepare that person for life after graduation. If we Seniors, in the past twelve years, have learned that we must actively live within a society, and not alone with our book knowledge, then our high school years have been successful. Therefore, we would like to dedicate this annual not only to scholarship in general, but particularly to the members of the Senior Class of 1961, whom we feel have success- fully completed this important phase of their education. SLIPERI TE DE T I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the cooperation of the student body during the school year. It is my sincere hope that it has been a worthwhile and happy year and that you have attained a measure of success. Success lies not in achieving what you aim at but in aiming at what you ought to achieve and pressing forward toward the goal. You have my every good wish for continued success and happiness. VIVIAN SHAFFER Secretary to Principal SENICR HIGH 'Wu SENIOR HIGH PRINCIPAL In the early days of the West scouts on the western plains found it difficult to make their way across the vast stretches of prairie. There were few landmarks, and it took keen observa- tion to find the signs that guided the plains- men safely along the trail. When they circled their camp sites for possible clues to the trail, they called it cutting for sign. To those of you who have already made the trip through Miami High School may your cutting for sign have been successful along your educational trail. To those of you who are still cutting for sign along your educational trail through MHS may it be the privilege of some of us to help you in the search for clues to the right direction. It is my sincere desire that you continue to seek information, to acquire skills and good habits, to develop proper attitudes and deep appreciations, and to maintain high ideals, all of which are essential in the building of a firm foundation for adult life. It is generally said that 'iyour high school days are the happiest days of your life. It is also a most critical time for preparing yourself for continued happiness and security. I feel that the students of this school have recognized their Student Council as the medium through which they can work for the gain of all. A person cannot and must not mention this year's council without first giving worthy praise to its superb sponsor. Without the presence of Mr. Joe Tom Hudspeth, the Student Council could never be a unified whole. Because of his guiding influence and vivid personality, I will regret leaving Miami High School. I give my personal thanks to the student body for electing me as their president. This is the greatest honor that can be given a high school student and it will leave a lasting impression on my life. agen. The marching band, stepping in high fashion, won first place trophies on each of their three trips-first Miami received a superior rating and first place trophy at Norman Band Day, Fort Smith, Arkansas, was the next contest marching for the band where they remained superior over all classes competing in parade marching and emerged with a second place trophy in routine marching, regional competition at Bartlesville was last on the list and here they received a 1 rating and first place trophy. The concert band received superior ratings at N. E. O. A. 8: M. Festival and at Tulsa University, thereby qualifying for the State Music Festival where they emerged with a rating of excellent.
