Shifting and changing, this world of today is not what it was yesterday nor yet what it will be tomorrow. Still there are these constnts, the love in oyr home, the beliefs to which we hold, the kinships which knit us into one people. These form our taproots which anchor us to the land in which we live. Without these roots we would be tossed to and fro much in the same way ' as those Oklahoma tumble weeds which ceaselessly and erratically are blown about by the capricious winds. We know and love the roots that anchor us to Miami, so we carefully searched for a title for this 1960 book which would convey a little of our pride. We wanted a name to symbolize our pride in our homes, our town and our state. So we chose the name MiHoma to best say that each of us feels that this is my Oklahoma, my Miami, and my homef' f 'Y v u 5 y X N X The Mil-Ioma staff wishes to extend a note of thanks to - those men and women who recognized the potential adver- fq tising power of the 1960 yearbook and backed their recogni- 'X tion with the solid support of the dollar bill. Doc is a tangible part of our school today and will continue to be so long as there are lips to speak and ears to hear. His spirit will be kept alive and passed on to each succeeding generation, for he was as a great and burning light and that light is a precious part of the MHS heritage and must never be allowed to fade away. 6 0405 R. C. Nichols, Superintendent of the town's educational system, has guided Miami's public schools for two-thirds of their total fifty year span. It is his foresight that has insured a continuous and orderly expansion of buildings and facilities. It is his steady hand upon the reins of leadership that has insured a constant emphasizing of thi scholastic aspects of school life with the solid teaching of the 5-Rs, readingfriting, and 'rithinetic, maia- ing up the foundation of all knowledge imparted. It is his insight that has separated the valueless from the valuable of the new education and it is through his initiative that the vocation and the guidance areas have been strengthened. ...Q-4 6 606 These men serve the town and its schools, George Vanpool, vice-presidentg Harold Erwin, R. Miami Chapter of Future Farmers of America was organized on August 7, 1956 with 32 members who invested a total of 33700. From these members, the four original judging teams were chosen. During 1957, these teams were active in winning several trophies. The Supervised Farm Training Program was enlarged and, in livestock shows, the Grand Champion steer was shown by a Miami FFA member at the Muskogee Free State Fair, and the Reserve Grand Champion barrow at the Cttawa County Fair. The year 1958 was climaxed by the showing of the Reserve Grand Champion barrow and the Grand Champion lamb. The total investment by the chapter members had climbed to 5110-00. In 1959, this figure was almost tripled by the 335,096 invested in the farming program. Seven Grand Champions and two Reserve Grand Champions were chalked up by the chapter in 1959- 1960.
