Therefore, membership is based upon character, scholarship, leadership and service. In order to be considered for membership, the stu- dents must stand in the upper third of their respective classes scholastically. They must have spent at least one year in the school. At the end of the Junior year in high school, five per cent of the class may be selected, and at the end of the Senior year, ten per cent may be selected. I Among the achievement of individuals during the school year, 1946-47, are the following ratins: Extemporaneous Speaking-Deloris Parker, Jerry Hollis-Excellent. Standard Oration-Morris Frye, Paluine Staton- Excelent. Dramatic Reading-Joanne Hetherington, Lloyd Cameron-Superior. Humorous Reading-Alice McFerron, David Mericle -Excellent. Monologue-C. H. Mullendore, Sarah Hilliard- Good. Poetry Interpretation-C. H. Mullendore, Pat Car- gill-Excellent. Original Orations-Shirley Payton, Jimmie Sand- mire-Superior. Speech Choir-efntire departrnentduperior. We are especially proud of our speech choir of forty voices who read Transcontinental in contest work. Shirley Payton and Jimmie Sandmire entered the ora- torical contest sponsored by the American Legion. A number of the students have entertained the Lions Club and Rotary Club in Miami. The Debate has constituted a very important part of the speech work this year. The Miami teams debated in the semifinals in the Southwest Baptist College tournament. David Mericle received a scholarship to the college for being one of the four outstanding debaters. One of the high-lights of the year's work was the play, J1mior Miss , presented February 6. During the year the department added a mirrophone to the school's speech equipment. There are 146 enrolled in typewriftingg 106 in first yearg 40 in second year. We have 32 typewiriters. In first year the minimum speed requirement is 30 words per minute. 'I'he aim of the course is to learn the fundamental principles of correct letter writing both personal and business forms. In second year the speed requirement is 50 words per minute. The aim of this course is to improve on the first vear requirements. with an added knowledge of all business and legal forms of ins truments. Only those who make A or B in first year typewriting are permitted to take second year. The Photography Club is composed of students interest- ed in learning to develop film and ma ke photographic prints. The members of the club also are responsible for the showing of films to the grade schools. The intramural program began in the fall of this school year with a double round robin tourney being played in volley ball. The winner of each grade, seventh to the twelth inclusive, was deter- mined. Then there was a play-off for Senior High Championship and Junior High Championship. After those winners were deter- mined a Junior-SSenior High Championship game was played. The same double round robin tourney was played for basketball. Time would not allow the same schedule for soft ball so a single elimination tournament was played. The Student Council of the Miami High School is composed of eight members each from the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. These students are elected each spring by their respective classes. Each year the Student Council, along with the Jun- ior High Representative Body and the Parent-Teachers' Association, sponsors a Student Carnival. The proceeds from this carnival are divided between the Student Counlil and the Parent-Teachers' Association. This year the Council has brought three Lyceum programs to the student body assembly7Duke Montai- gne, the magician, Donald Scott-Morrison, pianist, and Elizie R. Brown, mental wizard. In addition, this organi- zation with the help of the senior class of 1944 pur- chased a new electric scoreboard and clock for use in the gymnasium. The officers are as follows: Claude Hailey, presi- dent, Bill Kidwell, vice-presidentg Frances Porter, se- cretary: Don Truman, Treasurer, Rosalie Hatfield, re- porter. . o . ctvwh Home Economics Education as an Oklahoma State Program began 30 years ago with tne passage of the Smith-Hughes Act. So mnny changes have been made since then that it is difficult to describe 'the growth that has taken place. Some of the Goals of Homemaking Education are to learn to plan, prepare, and serve simple mealsg to im- prove personal health habitsg 'to improve personal grooming, to make simple articles and garmentsg to learn to preserve foodsg to improve buying practicesg to help in the care of small childreng and through these goals to develop a pleasing personality. The eighth grade Homemaking classes, taught by Mrs. Thelma Younger, have an enrollment of about 80 girls. The classes from grades nine to twelve are taught by Miss Lohmann and have an enrollment of 150 stu- dents. THE BROADCASTER, for many year the student publication of M. H. S., has as its aim the true presenta- tion of all phases of school life. It is interspersed with bits of hum-. It is published by the twelve members of the journalism class. The staff, which did not change during the first se- mester, was as follows: Editor ............................ ........................... P at Hollis Managing Editor ......... .,,,.. S arah Louise Kraybill Business Manager .......... ........,.......,. C orky Dareing Advertising Manager ........ ...... M ary Louise Williams Sports Editor ..................... ....,............ D avid Mericle Exchange Editor ..................,.....,,...... Peggy McReynolds Feature and news writers ................ Joy Phillips, J oline Bressie, Barbara Spence, Barbara Reynolds, A. L.
