This department not only offers three years of the classic language, Latin, but is also up-to-date in teaching three years of French and four years of Spanish. Latin students get a good background in word derivation and a knowledge of Caesar and Virgil. The French scholars read French legends and folk stories and study phonetics. An exciting event this year was a trip to Haiti for students enrolled in French classes. Spanish is our main foreign language because of our proximity to the Spanish-speaking countries of South and Central America. Students of Spanish classes not only learn to speak the language, but also acquaint themselves with the culture, customs, and the songs of the Spanish people. Classes studied examples of Spanish art and architecture when they took a field trip to Vizcaya.
