Handicapped most of the season by injuries and sickness, they nevertheless turned in a terrific per- formance in almost every game, coming from behind a two-touch- down eight-ball in two games to win. Although they failed to down Robert E. Lee, Jacksonville, this year, they turned in the best defensive line play of the year in that game. Stan Marks was the big gun on offense this year, but L. B. Brin- son and Randall Trigg proved that they were plenty capable of running the team while Marks was absent with a case of flu and a bad charley-horse. Brinson specialized in taking off on long trips without the aid of too much interference, twisting and turning 40 or 50 yards for a score. Trigg's specialty was picking up yardage in small chunks and firing passes to ends Yelvington and Stevenson. Also showing their ability to play hula-hips were Edie Spitzer and Ronald Sells, both wingbacks, as they took off right through the middle of the opposition for long gains. Specializing in ripping off big chunks of yardage through the line, Bob Carlin, who scored the first and last T.D. of his high- school career in the Durham game, Russell Parker, and Irwin Switchkow, sophomore fullback, kept the up-front boys busy mak- ing room for them to go through. In the extra-point department, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that Automatic Andy Stevenson filled the job to perfection. Stevenson kicked five in a row in the Edison game, eight straight in the Hoke Smith game. and split the uprights after each T.D. in the Jackson game. f 5 gg,-Q sf ,. ., .Z A 5, FOOTBALL 'TEAMfI'il'llIIl row, le!! The Stings started off the season at a slow pace. defeating a determined Typhoon eleven by a score C' of only 13-0. They speeded up the next couple of games. but then the troubles started. Marks went out for two games with a bad Charley horse. He also missed the Lee game because of an attack of flu. One bad inning spelled doom for the Stings on April 28, as Jackson of Jacksonville came from behind to beat the locals, 5-3, at Miami Field. With the aid of three errors by the normally alert Sting infield, the Tigers pushed across three unearned runs in the sixth to take the game. Ted Del Rio, although pitching a five-hitter was charged with the loss. Ted Del Rio, who hurled the first five frames for the win- ners was replaced by Stuart who was credited with the win. L. B. Brinson was the offensive gem with a two-run homer and a single. The victory-happy Blue and Golders racked up their l5th triumph of the rapidly-closing season May 8, as they subdued Ponce, 5-2, behind reliefer Jim Stuart's four-hit pitching. Willie Wilson was the chief stickwielder for the Tatemen with a three-run homer. With an early season loss to the Generals reverberating in their minds, the Tatemen closed their regular season May 10 with a 14-l shellacking of Jackson's hapless dia- mondmen. Entries in the free-throw contest were Emily Jo Moorehead and Jane Greenblat. The pair placed high, but were beaten by Homestead's Judy Gray in the finals of this tense event. So, an exciting day of victories and defeats, smiles and tears, cheers and groans, bumps and bruises culminated with entertainment provided by all schools participating and sponsored by city-wide G. A. A. Well may be said, A good time was had by all. Volleyball 0 MIAMI Hioi-i's A volleyball team was squeezed out of the win column by one point at the annual girls' volleyball tour- nament at the University of Miami's North campus, November ll. Using a round-robin method of play. Miami High played every other team competing. After playing their last game of the tournament against Edison, Sting girls found that they had lost 16-17, making Edison's AU squad county champions. The A team was captained by Mary McGehee and Pat Roberts, co-captain. The B squad. led by Barbara Ridge- way and Inez Serrano, had no trouble in capturing the plaque for their alma mater. Painting murals for the cafeteria took up a great deal of the time of P. S. C. members. Winners of these exhibits were Donna Marxer, August Becker. Bob Aronowitz, Sara Sue Watts, and Grace McLaughlin. Next on the agenda were the Thursday night Concerts in the open-air bandshell at Bayfront Park. There were times when it was so cold that the players' fingers were numb. but the band came through to T play some of the best concerts which were ever heard from a high school band. At these concerts. the band had the privilege of having some of the most famous conductors in the nation to direct them. Probably their most re- liable stand-by. other than Mr. Wright. was Mr. Henry Fillmore. past presi- dent of the Bandmaster's Association of America. Mr. Fillmore has written numbers for them. given suggestions for their half-time shows. and helped he NN, R. 'lhomas Hall and lius Becker. baton twirler them a great deal with their contest numbers. Another of the years highlights was the completion of the new band room and its dedi- cation to Mr. Thomas. principal. The new band room is called Thomas Hall. ln April and May. long rehearsals and drills began. with long hours of practice for the dis- trict and state band contests. These contests are the big event of every year. ' for it is the bands chance to show its real ability. In past years the band has brought home top honors in these contests which were held in Miami this year with Miami High as one of the hosts Something to lools forward to this summci is a proposed trip to Washington The band is planning to tour Washington playing concerts and on their way home they plan to spend a weels in a camp in North Carolina What 1 grand way to wind up a busy vear ln May the state band contest was held in our own Miami For days the students ot Miami High were interrupted in their classes by the sound of every imaginable noise an aggregation of musicians could mike. Our halls were filled with boys and girls from all parts of the state dressed in various and sun- dry colors of uniforms. Majorettes and drum majors did their practicing in the patios of M. H. S. One was inclined to loiter between classes to watch the spectacle. However. the prospect of 'st trip to the attendance office us- ually was enough to put a stop to this pleasant pastime. Many of the visitors from the smaller towns of Florida spent much of their time in marvel- ll4 ing at the size ot our school lt was a common sight to see these people gazing in amazement down the long gloomy corridors and into thc c tvernous auditorium This was a very busy time for both our own members and the visitors There were concerts sight reading contests and drilling exhibitions which were held in the Orange Bowl Ot coursc as a preliminary to all this the long hours ot grueling practice both betore the actual time ot the contest tnd during those last three days Every band was allowed to choose its con cert selections from a list prescribed by the Florida Association of Bandmasters. To avoid the possibility of a band s practicing their con- cert and only their concert selections and judge their knowledge of basic techniques. every band was required to play on three min- utes notice a piece of music never before pub- lished. These contests together with the drill displayed at the Orange Bowl. were the basis for the ratings which each band received. Although the schedule was as etlicient as possible under the circumstances. many boys il 'Q-Q, N. W., N , and girls went without meals and sleep in order to be at the proper place at the proper time. All and all. however. everyone seemed to enjoy his visit to Miami. and it was a tired. but happy, group that returned to their re- spective homes. Perhaps. the happiest ones of all were our band members. and well they might be. because our band was one of only two in the whole state to win lirst division in every Contest. It certainly was a good year for the music depart- ment. Their hard work and long hours of practice were rewarded in the end by the judges at the contest. The whole student body will remember this organization as an integral part of their high school life. At the first pep assembly in the K Fall. they provide that very necessary part of any pep assembly-the music. During every football game. the school cheered our boys on to victory to the accompaniment of spirited anthems. played by this group. For the sake of the spectacular half-time shows these boys and girls usually missed at least two quarters of the game. not 5 to mention the hours spent at re- hearsal and the work involved in keeping these uni- forms neat and clean. Few peo- ple realize the strictness of dis- eipline necessary in such an organi- zation if it is to be kept running smoothly. However. every band member knows. They have to abide by the rules. Because they do so willingly. we have one of the best bands in the state. ll5 DRAMATICS-Fmnl mir. lull In riylli-Shrine. Dillard. S. Forbes. Rosen. Wexler. Dixon. Mills. Stewart. Riding Club 0 To INTEREST students in horse back riding and to prepare them for nblue ribbon shows are the pur- poses of the Miami High Riding club. There has been a riding club at Miami High for ten years but this is the first year that the club had a constitution. Members Adele Vola. Marlene Bose and Bonnie Cross drew up the constitution in Septem- ber and the club was then eligible for Miss Becker's calendar. Miss Josephine Smith. club spon- sor. traveled with some of the mem- bers to horse shows at Key Largo. West Palm Beach. and Tampa. throughout the year. They ended up their season at South Miami when they entered the High School Riding show in May where Marlene Bose walked off with many ribbons. lnbrcy. In this way the members got practical experience in the teach- ing held. The club's money-making projects were the sale of peanuts at a Friday afternoon dance and selling jingle ' bells at Christmas. In the spring. all the Future Teacher clubs in Dade County met for a brunch at which time Miami High furnished the entertainment. Carolyn Glenn and Steve King sang a duet. Dawn Dayton danced. and Ercel Thomas gave a humorous reading. The county ofiicers for the year were: President. Pat Murphy: secre- tary, Elaine Goldsmithg treasurer. The '50 edition of the traditional talent show blitzed three capacity audiences in February with an array of stars garnered from the four corners of Miami High-and Miss Mersen's study hall! Sam Hemmingbay. a Broadway producer. fLeslie Langl comes to Miami High in search of outstanding talent to take back with him to New York. Jane Wilson tJan Andersonl. a MHS student meets him at the airport to take him to the school of blue and gold to show off its talent. What could be more typical of the cordial MHS way of receiving guests than to have a band promenade down the center aisle. up to the stage togreetMr.HemmingbayZ and. natch. the band was led by drum major Gus Becker Of course Jane wants to show ofl' the star- studded talent show right away by introducing a South American Fantasy presented by the Pan-American Club-Mais nui, oophs. l for- got we're still in Esmuinl, si! Due to the lack of space. we lust can't men- tion every one ol' the twenty-eight glamorous acts-but we'll try to mention as many as possible. Following shortly after Pan-Am's act came Pearson and Castleberry with a hi- larious rendition of Baby it's Cold Outside! Nor could we fail to mention those Campus Cuties who did their impersonations of Foot- I-I2 ball Blues-especially the impersonations of Coach George Trogden and cigar. and mighty 'Big Gene Ellensonu! Stealing the show for all three nights. among the individual acts. was Seda Khoyan. who did a dramatic ballet interpretation of The Peacock. The club that was voted to have given the best club act and awarded the Jamboree Trophy was a new little girlie's society-Little Women! No Jamboree could be complete without an act from the two rival clubs on campus- the Key Stand ln club and the Wheel Cin- derella Scores Againu club! Wow. what fun! The final act of the Jamboree was a take- off on the Broadway musical. South Pacific. ln Stingaree lingo it was South Atlantic! Teachers in the Jamboree! Boy. bet that was something! was the remark heard by many a stingaree student after the first show- ing of' the Jamboree! Yes. Miss Richardson. English Departmental Head. along with Miss Richert, Mr. Brom. Miss Lanier. Mrs. Billings, Miss McEwen. and Mr. Theobald did a take- off on the students of MHS and home room period. Could it be true. Stings? Concluding the star-studded festival were the Taylor Twins who did a Tap in Duplicate. What a sensation they made and only sophs. too! So with sweet memories. we of '50's Jam- boree send good wishes and our sympathy to the producers of Jamboree---'5 l. +fuw.a 1 222 Buddnes I ! M Day at lst Street 2 Qt .. Q g 'W 3' ' .
