Girls' Basketball improves with late season victories By Ana Martinez With ten players returning from last year's girls' basketball squad, experience was the strongest quality of the team. They were off to a very slow start this year, but later in the season improved by crushing Southwest 49-20 and beating Miami High 39-36. The team ended the season with a record of 6 wins and 14 losses. The girls may not have had the height of their opponents, commented Coach Connie Arcaini, but they had the spunk to make up for it. The team members credit their im- provements to the fact that they worked well together, practiced hard and had good team spirit. We were a close team, there was a great amount of team work, said Maria Moreno, who led the team in rebounds and in scoring. Gene Stage and Connie Arcaini shared the coaching responsibility during the season. There was no junior varsity to compete against, so the varsity and j.v. played together as one team. 88 Girls Basketball Carmen Perea attempts a jump shot against Hialeah High Senior Lisa Boyles dribbles the ball around a Hialeah High player to later shoot a lay-up.

Badminton team regroups after one year's absence BY: PIERRE DWYER Sports Editor Since we didn't have a badminton team last year, l was really looking forward to a bunch of new faces and new talent, claimed Coach Fran King at the outset of the season. This year the team had quite a large turnout as over 30 students tried out for the I6 posi- tions on the team. Contrary to what many people may believe, badminton is not as easy as it looks. Badminton is a fast-moving, aggressive sport. I think it's the quickness of the sport which surprises most people, said Coach Fran King. Outstanding efforts were contributed by team players Mandy Hernandez, Oscar Kourany, Eddy Chao, and Sophomore Abe Rodrigeuz, who showed some promise. 'The reason I joined the team is because I was on it before and l'd found it very challenging. It's a lot harder than it looks, said Oscar Kourany. ,. ,VC ' . ff Ax - 8 X., .assi f .. c, ' ,I .s-ww. vi- '- s F , 'aw , vggfw .isp X , x A .. my - ' A K ., i -vi Steve Moreno practices his volleying techni- Coach Fran King gives instructions to team members Elizabeth Grau and Jack Lopez before the team's opening match at Coral Park.
