The price is great but the rewards are greater By Ana Martinez When you inherit a program that has only one re- tuming player, your success is usually found on the practice court and not during the game as this year's varsity basketball team proved. I was very optimistic about this season. l had an excellent group of young men that were willing to pay the price of working hard to produce a good program. They had a chance to develop and learn something new. The attitude and sportsmanship that they leave behind will be noticed by others in years to come, stated Coach Edward Joyner. Early in the year, the team showed some weaknesses, but outstanding players Ricky Gutierrez, Vinnie Rodriguez, and Jose Beiro helped improve the squad. Forward Arsenio Arabitg also contributed a lot to the team as he was the leading scorer averaging over ten points a game. 84 Basketball As Gus Alfonso watches on, Jose Mole attempts a jump shot that scores the opening points against Palmetto. To score a point for the team against Miami High, captain Gus Alfonso jumps to pass the ball. 1

Football players have 'successful' season of 3 3 By: Pierre Dwyer Sports Editor The junior varsity football team completed their season with a 3-3 record. After an open- ing game loss at Columbus on September 18, the team won three straight beating Miami High, Miami Beach, and Miami Spr- ings. But the team lost the final two games at home to Northwestem and Coral Gables. The team lacked experience but overall had a successful season which was very rewarding and enjoyable to see happen, said Coach Donald Buslinger. The team's main assets throughout the season was a strong running game and a solid defense. The offense was able to score from almost anywhere on the field, making many big plays. David Del Rio, running back, broke loose for over 180 yards and two touchdowns in a victory over Miami High. Being on junior varsity gave me the chance to play and perform the way lwanted to, ex- plained David after he was moved to the varisty squad. Other outstanding players for the team were Quarterback Adam Laboranti, Tight End David Misacavage, and defensive players Bill Giunta and Carlos Munoz. Bill Giunta 1431, Oscar Bello 1521, and Pedro Davila 1641 stop this Northwestem running back. J.v. Football 83
