The charred helmet of a l.l.S. serviceman lies in the desert sands of eastern lran at the spot where a daring attempt to rescue the American hostages came to a tragic end in April. A burned-out helicopter used in the mission is in the background. lronically, the hostages were released on Jan. 20, 1981, Inauguration Day, after 444 days in captivity. Polish workers, who struck for and won new liberties, sit under a poster showing Soviet and Polish flags at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk in August. 340
