Business education courses prepare students for college and jobs By Alicia Cordova The business education department continues to be important in high school. l think every student should take typing in school in preparation for the future, stated Mrs. Mae Chewning, department head. Students are realizing that these skills will be helpful for future careers in business and for assisting them in pursuing a college education. Some courses offered such as accounting and bookkeeping classes dealt with the management of finances. Shorthand classes dealt with the develop- ment in dictation and transcribing mailable letters. Typing helped students to type term papers, proofread material, and secure part time jobs as well as learning how to deal with business transac- tions. Business education guarantees a good future if the skills are learned well, stated Mrs. Pepita Soto, business education teachers. Wsual art students demonstrate creativity in displaying their exhibitions By Ana lnguanzo The industrial arts program explored the fields of graphic arts, metals, carpentry, printing, drafting, and arts and crafts. Industrial and creative arts courses were specifically geared to fill the students' individual needs in that they could work at their own rate and receive satisfaction from what they produced, said Mr. Bill Mclean, wood craft instruc- tor. Advanced courses involved wood turning, finishing, and cabinet making. Many classes par- ticipated in the Dade County Youth Fair in March. The exhibitions were judged on neatness, quality of craftsmanship, originality, and total effect. Arts and crafts fields were involved in many ex- hibitions featuring the best art from many different levels. They displayed their talent at Burdines in January for which they were awarded cash and scholastic awards.
