English 10, 11 Wycoff, Norman English 11, 12 Language Arts Department emphasizes vital and necessary basic skills By Sergio Garcia Language arts teachers stressed the basic skills and development of reading and writing in order to prepare students for college and work. They have provided general background information in literature and literary works. ln emphasizing these important skills, the teachers feel that their students are leaving English classes with a more confident attitude. ln placing importance in the general skills area, we as teachers, feel that students are more prepared to face the challenges of the outside world, stated Mary Ruth Fowler, language arts department chairperson. Basic skills are emphasized because they become imperative in the future, stated Mr. Ernest Moses, English teacher. English teachers set up after school workshops to help their students. This, in turn, assured the stu- dents that they would get the help that they needed. Language Arts Department 5

Mathematics Department constant evaluation of courses benefit students By Jane Sapp The math department offered various courses this year according to the students' needs. In addi- tion, a big part of the mathematics program was im- proving the courses that were already being offered to students. This year, instead of just one semester of math review, two semesters were offered. The second semester was geared primarily toward preparing students to pass college entrance ex- aminations. ln some math classes, audio-visual units were used as teaching aids. Teachers often en- couraged students to stay after school so that they could be tutored in their areas of weakness. We are constantly evaluating our course offerings and teaching methods and students' placement procedures in order to improve the quality of the mathematics program, stated Mrs. Hazel McLen- don, department head. 316 Mathematics Department l Mr. Caballero checks Martha Pijeira's homework to see if she un- derstands what he explained earlier in class. 4 l
