They have provided general background information in literature and literary works. ln emphasizing these important skills, the teachers feel that their students are leaving English classes with a more confident attitude. ln placing importance in the general skills area, we as teachers, feel that students are more prepared to face the challenges of the outside world, stated Mary Ruth Fowler, language arts department chairperson. Basic skills are emphasized because they become imperative in the future, stated Mr. Ernest Moses, English teacher. English teachers set up after school workshops to help their students. This, in turn, assured the stu- dents that they would get the help that they needed. Language Arts Department 5
