Caritas members bring love and warmth to senior citizens By Ana Martinez A nursing home is the last resort for most senior citizens. lt is often a place where the aged and sick retire to when they are considered a burden by a society that will no longer support them. Caritas tries to relieve this sadness by visiting the residents of Palmetto Extended Care Center every Sunday from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Caritas members bring love, care and warmth to an environment which would otherwise be void of these qualities. By visiting Palmetto, Caritas members not only shared their time, but also their attention with lonely people. They benefited from the experiences and the stories of the elderly, and in doing so, they reached out to understand the feelings of people who lived in an older, different world, commented President Ana Dopico. For Civinettes year starts off with special olympics By Alicia Cordova Civinettes started off the school year with enthusiasm and spirit by going to the Special Olym- pics. This event was held many times throughout the year in order to give retarded children a chance to compete with one another in athletic events'fThe special Olympics was an experience l'll never forget, stated Maria Avila, a faithful member. Aside from club meetings, jinx doll and poster workshops, and helping the community in general, the club had some major projects. ln May, members had a com- munity picnic with all the citizen advocates. They also put on a show at Suniland during Christmas, and took their advocates on various trips to movies, picnics, etc. The three kids we took care of were really fun to be with. lt's nice to see how much they learned, stated Maria Rivera, club treasurer.
