Junior Varsity team has a new coach and a winning season. By: Maria E. Cardenas An athlete should be dedicated, eager to leam, and ready to win. The members of the girls' volleyball team possessed all of these qualities. Led by Captain Luisa Fernandez and co- captain Emma Grau, the team showed its potential by ending its season with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. l'm very pleased that as a first year high school coach we had a winning season, remarked Coach Connie Arcani about her group comprised of sophomores and juniors. Outstanding players were Frances Gil, Maria Gonzalez, Luisa Fernandez, and Emma Grau. l feel we played extremely well. We were all close to one another and believe it or not, that helped quite a bit. Team work is an im- portant thing, stated Sophomore Francis Gil Coach Connie Arcaini and Valester Smith look on as the game gets more and more critical. 98 J.v. Ability, depth, and intense effort shown by tennis team By Ana Martinez One of the greatest things about this year's tennis team was the ability and depth of talent the team possessed. Our winning season was due to the fact that the intensity of .effort shown maintained the level of play throughout the season, commented Coach Wncent Maury. This year the team, one of the most deter- mined and willing to work in the district, had a high degree of natural ability. The team started out their season with a victory and continued winning throughout the year with a high performance level. We had very good prospects, although l wish more girls would have tried out so that we could have fielded a full girl's squad, stated Coach Maury. The team has produced many young stars. The top five players were: Steve Moreno, Angel Ferrer, Paul Czerniak, Rod Tendrich, and Mike Machine Marhee, according to the coach. 1 Tennis Angel Ferrer hits a hard forehand during a practice at Tamiami Tennis court.
