1 e, Q 1 I 754,41 YfA Vfzww Mzamz Central Mus County Champzonslup FLYERS TAKE SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE Congratulations to the Mlaml Central Flyers on w1nn1ng their second' straight county class B basketball champmonship The Flyers have a perfect record so' far in the county tourney Last year was the first year Central competed in the county tourney the consolidation of Staunton Lostcreek and Eliza beth just becoming effect1ve with the start of the 1952 53 school year Coach Carl Sargent combined the squads from the three schools into a team that swept to the Stillwater Valley league champ1onsh1p and also to the county tourney tltle The fans had high hopes of a district championship but the Flyers were edged out by Versailles in a hectic struggle that caused a lot of repercuss1ons Versailles then lost out ln the first round of the reg1onal This year the Flyers had some troubles durmg the regular sea lon and were beaten out for the league tltle by Bradford and New ton who wound up 111 a t1e for the champlonshlp H o w e v e r 1n the county tourney lt was d1fferent Hlttlng peak form the Flyers swept through the meet wlthout a loss defeatmg Newton twlce 1n rather dec1s1ve manner Just how far the boys w1l1 go rn the d1s tl'lCt 15 of course a matter of spec ulatron They w1ll meet mlghty tough opposxtron but the momentum famed m the county tourney may V, carry them farther than most ob- C ffikiffbls By LARRY FINCH Miarnr Centrals hlgh flymg qumtet copped the M1am1 county basketball champronship for the second straxght year Thursday evenmg when they defeated a scrappy Newton quintet for the second tlme thlS week 60 48 Carl Sargents boys by vrrtue of the1r victory have quahfled for a f fr berth in the drstrlct B tourna ment at Sprmgfield whrch is 43 scheduled to get underway next week The champ1onsh1p game WHS played before a capacrty crowd m the T1pp Crty gytnnasxum and the huge crowd was treated t0 some real thrills throughout the evenmg as some small sharp- shooters from Concord fl feated Lostcreek 43 24 ln the Ju r high tournament and then saw the Mi amr Central Reserves set a pattern for therr brgger brothers as they copped the champronship in their d1v1s1on from Newton with a 81 29 last second victory Three Mlalhl Central varsity players h1t double figures for the Flyers as Ronald Hufford one of the smoothest performers on the floor last everung was good for seven baskets from the field and three charrty tosses for a total of 17 pomts Dallas Demm1tt hit four from the fxeld and a lxke number of foul shots for 12 pornts and Don G1ll11and got 10 pomts on five from the fxeld MIAMI CENTRAL Ma Mltchell Hufford G11111and Demmltt M1 Mltchell Wagner Totals NEWTON Chr1st1an Gnodle Fessler Anderson Leonard Totals Score by perlods 1 M1ami Central 15 17 12 16-60 Newton 16 ll 10 ll-48 o 0 O 0 0 n 1 .
