'he Varsity season at a glance he unbelievably successful 9-1 season led to a berth in the state play- and re-birth of the excitement that only a state championship can cre- Football was the story of the year, the topic that dominated MCC's stu- ts minds and spirits for a large part of 1976. ead football coach Jerry Anderson, the Miami News' Coach of the r, led the Chiefs to more than their most successful season ever as they- iinated All-Star teams around the county and state. Lorenzo Roan, Reg- Dgburn, Fred Abad, John Swain and Lester Williams headed the Section lAA's first team, with James Gilbert and Rick Christian making the sec- team. Roan made the All-State team. he Chiefs led the county by placing fifteen players on each of the All-City All-County teams. Roan, Williams, Swain, Abad and Ogburn were Ped to first teams with Robert Alvarez, Gilbert, Christian and Rubin Proc- on second teams. David Grant, Terry Daniels, Ricky Green, King Scott, jers Brown and Rafael Ramon rounded out the honors on the third and orable mention teams. JAMBOREE . 10-0 win over Hialeah and a 3-0 shutout against Norland at the Jambo- set the pace for the season. 46-yard run by Lorenzo Roan gave MCC the jamboree's only touch- in and an extra point kick and a field goal by Rafael Ramon brought the re to 10-0 over Hialeah. amon kicked a 27-yard field goal in the second half for a 3-0 win over land. CAROL CITY 20 - NORTH MIAMI 14 larol City opened its regular season against North Miami and got the job done. With cloudy skies and a 6096 chance of rain, the Chiefs led the qeers 13-O at the end of the first half, but lightning forced postponement e second half until Sept. 18. lorth Miami was ready for the Chiefs after the week's break and moved to -13 lead before Alvester Martin recovered a North Miami fumble on the eer's 1 1 yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Roan swept five s for the final touchdown, and City won 20-14. CAROL CITY 27 - MIAMI SPRING 3 he Miami Springs game told a different story altogethevas the Chiefs inced the Hawks 27-3. The Hawks capitalized on a fumble to take an y 3-0 lead at halftime, but it was their only score of the game oan opened MCC's second half scoring with a four yard run. Reggie mum scored twice from 10 and 18 yards out, and James Gilbert added final touchdown with a 1 yard run. Ramon connected with 3 extra point .S . CAROL CITY 20 - NORTH MIAMI BEACH O he Chiefs continued to prove their superiority with a 20-0 win over North mi Beach, and they didn't waste any time. On the first possession of the ie, the offense moved the ball before Gilbert took it into the end zone on 5 yard run. Ioan swept around the right side for a 32 yard run and another score. CAROL CITY 41 - NORTH WESTERN O he powerful Chiefs kept on rolling with a brutal 41-0 victory over North- stern. CAROL CITY 38 - NORLAND 19 in unbeaten record and a neighborhood championship were at stake en MCC faced Norland. 'he Vikings drew first blood. Richardson led the scoring with 2 touch- vns and was followed by Randy Cleveland, Daniels and Roan with 1 ece. Ramon added to the total with a field goal, and extra points brought final score to 38-19 and another MCC victory. CAROL CITY 33 - EDISON 13 1 came the Red Raiders who sustained a scoring drive, and before the efs knew it, the score was 7-0. Carol City knew it had work to do. After a g, time consuming drive, MCC scored on a 12 yard run bv QB Ogburn. tt halftime, MCC regrouped in the locker room and, doing what it had for ames, came back with 3 consecutive scoring drives. loan scored TD's of 1, 4, and 20 yards on 15 carries. Outstanding per- nances were shown by Swain, Scott and Williams. CAROL CITY 24 - JACKSON 14 The scene was Miami-Dade North, the event - the Soul Bowl that would help determine the Northern Division Championship. The tempo was set -two teams of supposed equal strength, balance and speed. The season had been building up to this most crucial game. Both teams were looking for playoff berths, both were 6-O, but one would have to go home 6-1. Roan, Richardson and Gilbert split the scoring with one touchdown apiece. Ramon added the extra points and field goal as Carol City scored a must win over Jackson 24-14 and raised their record 7-0. The defense, led by Swain, Williams, Rod Wilder and Dwayne Burse, gave an outstanding performance while holding the powerhouse Generals to 14 points. CAROL CITY 14 - CENTRAL 0 MCC opened up the scoring against Central with touchdown by fullback Gilbert but had trouble adding more points until Daniels scored with seconds remaining. The defense held Central scoreless, giving the Chiefs a 14-0 vic- tory for homecoming. CAROL CITY 28 - HIALEAH 13 The team that snapped MCC's win streak last year came into Miami-Dade Stadium with the same idea again this year, but the Chiefs were not to be denied a win over Hialeah. Ron scored first on an 89-yard run while Daniels, Gilbert and Roan added more TD's. MCC captured the Northern Division title with the 28-13 win and raised their record to 9-0. CAROL CITY 7 - HIALEAH MIAMI LAKES 37 The Chiefs learned the agony OT defeat as they saw their dreams of an unbeaten season destroyed 37-7 by Hialeah-Miami Lakes at Milander. Gary Harper led the fired-up Lakes' attack that demolished MCC's chances for an unblemished record. Roan scored the Chiefs' only TD, and Ramon kicked the extra point. CAROL CITY 22 - PALMETTO 13 Ogburn handed the ball off to a backfield that scampered through the Panthers' defense for 195 yards. Roan made up for any of Ogburn's slack, gaining 120 yards on just 21 carries and scoring two touchdowns, one from 1 yard and another from 4 yards out. He also threw the key block that enabled Daniels to score the Chiefs' first TD on a five-yard run around left end. The turning point of the game came in the third quarter, when the Panthers attempted a halfback pass only to be intercepted by defensive back Keith Carter. Carter raced to Jhe Chiefs' one-yard line where Roan plunged up the middle for a - ea . On the Chiefs' next possession, they increased that margin to 21-7 on a 67-yard march down field with Roan scoring. Ramon added the extra points. The Panthers scored to make it 21-13, with just over three minutes to go. CAROL CITY 22 - POMPANO BEACH 20 Carol City's game against Pompano Beach was labeled as the Chiefs' final season game by a Broward journalist, but the Chiefs proved them wrong with a breathtaking 22-20 win. The game started as a struggle with both teams with nothing to show for their efforts. Then Lorenzo Roan opened the scoring. Vlifilder and Swain were outstanding for defense, with shocking hits and tac es. CAROL CITY 7 - TAMPA PLANT 6 Tampa Plant shut down Carol City's touted offense for three quarters, but MCC's defense did the same to Tampa relinquishing only 6 points in the game. The key play of the game came late in the fourth quarter when David Lee intercepted a Plant pass. That play was the spark that the Chiefs' offense needed as they marched 55 yards down the field with Roan going over from the one yard line. Plant's last effort was thwarted by MCC's defense, and Carol City took over as the clock ran down. CAROL CITY 15 - GODBY 21 Carol City's hopes of winning the state championship were stopped by Tallahassee Godby by a score of 21-15. Tallahassee opened the scoring on a nine yard sprint and came back on their second possession to score a 64 yard touchdown giving Godby a com- manding 13-O lead. The Chiefs came back to score a touchdown on a 43 yard pass from Ogburn to Gilbert as the first half ended 13-7. Opening the second half, Godby recovered a Carol City fumble and went on to score on a one yard plunge. The Chiefs didn't quit. On their next possession, Daniels scored on a 63 yard end around to make the score Carol City 15, Tallahassee 21. Carol City had a final shot to win the game, but Daniels was intercepted on a reverse pass play. Carol City ended the season with a 12-2 record, the brest in MCC's history, and their first chance at a state football champion- s ip. Football f 107
