144 I Football PERSEVERANCE . . . . . gives power to weakness. Emerson said, The power ofa man increases steadily by continuance in one direction. He becomes aquainted with the resis- tance and with his own tools, increases his skill and strength and learns favorable moments and favorable accidents. He is his own apprentice, and more times gives a great addition of power, just as a falling body acquires momentum with every foot of the fall. lt's the perpetual pushing and assurance that puts a difficulty out of countenance, and makes a seeming impossibility give way. For great works are preformed not by strength, but by perseverance.
