Honor Court Honor Society To be a member of the National Honor Society is the highest high school honor that a student can receive. Only 1521. of each junior and Senior class is eligible for membership in this society and each candidate is elected by the faculty according to Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. One duty the Honor Society undertakes is to be of service to the school. One project that the Meyersdale Honor Society has done faithfully for years is taking care of the Hag. The Honor Society also gives the boys' and girls' athletic awards at graduation and also gives 5510.00 to the valedictorian award and 35.00 to the salutatorian award. The Meyersdale Chapter of the National Honor Society is one of the most outstanding organizations in our school and is very ably sponsored by Miss Slagle. Honor Court, sponsored by the Honor Society, is the Meyersdale High School form of student government. The court is run on a demerit system. The personnel of the court are two junior and two senior representa- tives from the Honor Society, a chief justice and an associate justice named from this group. To make this a student government a representative and an alternate are elected from each homeroom. The court meets every Tuesday with the chief justice presiding. All cases are brought before the court and the defendent is given a chance to give his side of the case. If he pleads guilty, or is found guilty, he is given the specified number of demerits. All de- cisions are reached by a majority vote. The faculty may report cases, as may any member of the court. Students may also turn in cases, but two witnesses are required. A list of offenses is given to every student at the be- ginning of each year. Miss Slagle is the Waiting! court faculty adviser. 36
