Mr. Campbell keeps our rooms clean making our school hours more enjoyable. His pleas- ing personality has brought many smiles to our faces. This dedica- tion is a token of our gratitude to him. To the Class of 1950: Each one of you has completed a period of work and study and is look- ing forward to opportunities for further achievement and more worthy self-expression. Hope is the spirit of youth, it is the lamp to the feet that lights the way to noble achievement. You will hear all the notes of discourage- ment, of mockery, of cynicism, and of disapproval. The hard things of life will not pass you by, and the band of friendship and love may not al- ways be near to cheer and sustain youg but just when the words of adversity and sorrow are keenest, we, who have faith in you, know that you will be strongest to resist, and most courageous to meet and conquer the tempta- tion to weakness and despair. You are part of a new generation. You were born and reared in a new society. The freedom you have is yours to destroy or strengthen as you see fit. I cannot say how you might live. An energetic committee was selected to plan the rhythmic sessions. The themes of the dances were quite novel and had a mirthful flavor, which was very happily received by all the students. Later in the year it was decided that more money was needed to finance the junior-Senior Prom. Again, in a manner conquering all problems, they started selling magazine subscriptions. Their persuasive sales talks and careful canvassing of the town resulted in a very profitable campaign. The Prom was well worth the effort put forth in planning it. Together with the Seniors the dance orchestra was secured, advertisement was cir- culated, and the auditorium was dreamily decorated. The turnout for the highlight of the school year was much greater than it was expected. The Aafcivities Divisiwn Honor Court Honor Society To be a member of the National Honor Society is the highest high school honor that a student can receive. Only 1521. of each junior and Senior class is eligible for membership in this society and each candidate is elected by the faculty according to Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. One duty the Honor Society undertakes is to be of service to the school. One project that the Meyersdale Honor Society has done faithfully for years is taking care of the Hag. The Honor Society also gives the boys' and girls' athletic awards at graduation and also gives 5510.00 to the valedictorian award and 35.00 to the salutatorian award. The Meyersdale Chapter of the National Honor Society is one of the most outstanding organizations in our school and is very ably sponsored by Miss Slagle. Honor Court, sponsored by the Honor Society, is the Meyersdale High School form of student government. The court is run on a demerit system. The personnel of the court are two junior and two senior representa- tives from the Honor Society, a chief justice and an associate justice named from this group. To make this a student government a representative and an alternate are elected from each homeroom. The court meets every Tuesday with the chief justice presiding. All cases are brought before the court and the defendent is given a chance to give his side of the case. If he pleads guilty, or is found guilty, he is given the specified number of demerits. All de- cisions are reached by a majority vote. The faculty may report cases, as may any member of the court. Students may also turn in cases, but two witnesses are required. This year approximately fifty girls took part in selling candy in the halls, checking coats at the Maple Festival Ball, putting on a hilarious assembly in form of a mock trial and in the planning of the annual Spring banquet. An important event, also, was the acquiring of a new leader, Miss Prima Chiocchio, who took over after the marriage of Miss E. Shipley. The girls also enjoyed many well planned programs during the bi- monthly meetings. ALPHA 59 Hi View This year the staff of the Hi View is quite proud of themselves. The reason for this is because the Penn State School Press Exchange recognized the Hi View as the school publication of the month. It was considered one of the best mimeographed school papers in Pennsylvania. The Ex- change thought the Hi View had very fine news coverage. They also thought the make-up work of the paper was good. The co-operation and work of the entire staff and Miss Bird, faculty adviser, has brought about this success. Hi Point Camera-Action-write it! They write the Meyersdale High School News for the Meyersdale Republi- can. Most of the alumni find this column most interesting as they like to know what the up to date news is at their Alma Mater. Then too, the parents of the students can know more about the various school activities and the student participation in them. The girls deserve a lot of credit for doing such a swell job. I'm sure we would all miss the column if suddenly they stopped writing it. So, keep writing girls! Quill and Scroll Society In the assembly program on March 9, the Quill and Scroll Society held their induction. Eight new members were inducted into the society. To be a member of this society the student must have a high scholastic standing, they must be either a junior or senior, and a sample of their work must be sent to Chicago and approved. Members of the society receive pins bearing the quill and scroll. The quill represents the great care which must be put forth to turn thoughts into proper language and the scroll represents the permanent quality of good writing. High School Band This year's high school band, under the direction of Mr. Carl Sassaman, reached new heights in Meyersdale's music world. During the school year they participated in many school and community affairs, including forma- tions at football and home basketball games, the Christmas Parade, South County Band Festival, the Maple Festival, and their annual Spring Concert. Meyersdale was also represented at All-State Band by Norman Miller. The Concert held May 5, was composed of several novelties and really good selections, among which were Tschaikowsky's Pathetique Symphony and The A Minor Concerto by Grieg. Seniors in the band were presented with reversible, red and black jackets. With good student spirit, expert leadership and a common liking for music, M. H. The story concerned a dude ranch which was temporarily without an owner due to the death of Colonel Blair. Argument about ownership came when Lettie, the Colonel's niece, and Larry, who was like the Colonel's own son, both thought they should get the ranch. Of course, love added to the plot. The chief characters were as follows: Letiie, Alice Hornigg Larry Ben- son, Carl Nunnarig Aunt Lavina, Hazel Firleg Emily, Doris Swearmang Rennie, Don Pollock. The entire chorus was in the operetta as cowboys, dudines, and Mexicans. Dance Band One of the most active organizations of M. H. S. is the dance band,: our own M. H. S. Music Masters. They provide much pleasant listening and dancing at those Friday night dances and other special occasions when requested. This organization consists of sixteen instrumentalists and three vocalists and is under the supervision of Mr. Sassaman. One big assign- ment undertaken by the Music Masters this year was to provide the music for the Maple Queen elimination contest in Somerset. A member of the Home Economics Club, Peggy Kimble, was elected second vice president of the state. The Home Economics girls also attended the State Farm Show at Harrisburg at which time Virginia Bittner and Gladys Korns won second prize for their cake baking. The Home Economics girls served banquets, sold hot dogs at the foot- ball and basketball games, sold plastic articles, greeting cards, and also sponsored a dance as their projects for raising money. Future Farmers of America Our boys in the blue jackets advanced through another year of F. F. A. piling success on success as they used projects galore to mark up their achievements. One of our F. F. A.'s top rated projects was the trip to the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Two of our club's members, Harold Crissinger and William Knieriem received their Keystone State Farming degrees-the highest in the state F. F. A. organization. The smell of pine trees entered every class room near Christmas time as the Vocational Agriculture boys started another successful project- selling Christmas trees to the townspeople of Meyersdale. Meyersdale High has one of the most complete libraries in the County. It is under the guidance of our Teacher-Librarian, Miss Bolden and twenty- eight student librarians who take care of the library while Miss Bolden is conducting her English classes. The duties of the librarians are to check in and sign out books, to keep order and quiet in the library at all times, and to help students find desired books of information for reference work. Four of the librarians have charge of mending the books. Two hundred and nineteen volumes have recently been added, includ- ing a new set of Americana Encyclopedia. Our library offers all kinds of reading from light fiction to the most specialized kind of reference work. An additional service is available on vocations, as well as a fair amount of current source material to be found in the seventeen monthly magazines and in the pamphlet file. We also have a subscription for the junior Liter- ary Guild and for the Wilson Reference Shelf. Our Raiders handed out plenty of punishment this past year. Of course, they had some in return, but it was worth it. They won and they lost, but whatever the score was, our Raiders turned in a job well done. 55 GENES BOYS . . . Basketball john R055-john played a forward and is a junior. He excelled in one handed shots from out front and also in driving in for lay up shots. In spite of his height, John was the teams high scorer and was very aggressive. Don Beal-Don teamed up with Ross to give the team a pair of small but efficient forwards. Don collected most of his points on one handed push shots from the side and was usually the pay off man on fast break plays. Russ W'eimer-Russ was the tallest man on the squad and put his height to good use in controlling the rebounds off both bank-boards. His favorite was a long one handed push shot from the side. Russ is a senior and co-captain of the squad. fuck Hamplon- Bugs, as he is known to his teammates, is a senior and co-captain of the team. Jack scored most of his points on left hand hook shots from the pivot and on rebound taps. Bugs was also a good defensive man and helped control the boards. lim Hojffmeyer-jim moved up from the Junior Varsity last year to be- come a member of the starting five this year. Moss, earned his position through his accuracy on two handed set shots from the corner. The team was red hot in the first half and led 25-7 at halftime. SOMERSET 46-23 Somerset's Class A District 5 Champs came to town confident of an easy victory, but they were surprised by the Raiders ability to control the rebounds from the much taller Eagles. At halftime, the score was 14-16 in Somerset's favor. In the middle of the third quarter, the Raiders lost three first stringers on fouls. From there on the Eagles pulled way ahead. ROCKXVOOD 25-36 Meyersdale playing on Rockwood's cracker box floor stayed with the Mainliners for three quarters. At halftime the score was tied 13-13. The Class B Champs spearheaded by their big 6 ft. 4 in. center had a de- cisive advantage in playing on their small floor. Things are mov- ing so fast that the world just can't seem to keep up with them. just look at Meyersdale for example. XVhy the B 8: O is so fast that the Casselman River has been blown clear over to Bedford County. Even the old shirt factory is feeling the change-I hear they're making jet propelled flying suits now. But one thing they can't change, I guess, is that sweet old maple syrup. That's the best tastin' stuff I've ever had the privilege eatin'-it seems to make my bicuspids pop up and take notice. Speaking of maple syrup reminds me of those first festivals we had. Those were the days-the gay 40's. My old high school days were lots of fun-I can't relive them they say, but I sure do have memories. School memories are fine memories. Why, way back in 1950 I never thought that Patty Conn would be teaching weight-lifting but is thinking of going back to taxi driving. Louis Carouse is coach of the South Side Bulldogs. Buzz Belcher is playing guard for him. Louie has twenty-five cheerleaders with Regena Saylor as leader. Dick Vitale has taken Walt Disney's place. By the way, he'll be one of the celebrities to attend the Maple Festival this year along with Irene Quattro and Wayde Gray who are also in Hollywood. Wilda Weimer just got back from Reno after divorcing her fourth hus- band. Carl Phalin has been voted America's number one play boy. just think of it, Betty Martz is still Mr. Hosie's secretary fHow did she stand him this long?j Don Wagner is a violinist. He is playing solo chair in the Meyersdale Symphony. Bob Pollock is playing solo clarinet in this organization. Dale Phennicie's band is really making headlines. They hope to get him to play for the Queen's Ball this year. Barbara Lawson, Ruth Hutzell, Pauline Bowman, and Vernon Bittner are his vocalists. Ron- nie Fritz is his manager. jack Bassett, a very hadsome and brilliant young man is now Mayor of Garrett. james Smiley is singing commercials on the radio. Helen Baker is a news commentator. Zona Diveley and Bettylu Shockey are typewriter repairmen. It seems George Shockey lost out in big time, he is back on thc farm singing to his chickens. Speaking of farms the class of '50 can be right proud of quite a few of their members. jack Engle has a large dairy farm--five hundred cows. He's the first farmer around here to use atomic powered milkers. Harold Crissinger has been chosen Pennsylvania's lead- ing farmer. Albert Diveley is a veterinarian and even argues with the poor dumb animals. 62 PROPHECY To 1960 Bill Knieriem is teaching vocational agriculture. Marion Bittner has an egg farm and is in stiff competition with Mr. Darrah. Jeannine Bow- man has her own theater and is making so much money she has a private nurse-Lois Sellers-to take care of her. There's really nothing wrong with her. Jeannine is still corresponding with Werner Weissbrodt. Rev. Bob Austin is preaching in New York. Bernice Knepper is his secretary. Jean Durr will graduate this year from Columbia University. Joan Griffith and Bonita Boyer are both nurses now. Marriage seems to be the main vocation. Lois Niner heads the list as Mrs. Harold Potter, next is Jane Berkley as Mrs. Harold Werner, and Peg- gy Kimble is also on the list. Jack Hampton is still looking for a girl his height to marry. The best seller of the year How to Nab a Man was authored by Jo Rosenberger fHer pen name Rose Dozej. Janie Robertson is publishing the book. Alysann Bradburn is manager of the Keystone Shoe Store. Wilberta Paul is teaching Driver's Education. That's Jean Kelley you see on television every morning at five o'clock. She's quite a star now. If you've been keeping up with the wrestling matches you've probably noticed Thelma Miller. And Donna Lief is playing John's Other Wife. That's some factory, Otis Baer's building. He's going to make Studebakers. Russ Weimer has been promoted to head car washer. That's the reason he's acting so con- ceited. The produce business must be good. Jack Demarco now has two airplanes. Have you bought any collapsible light bulbs? Gordon Schardt is the inventor in case you don't know. Roger Bowman and Bob Secrest are both working in a factory in Ohio building jet planes. Selling pencils is Edison Garlitz's business. He certainly hasn't ad- vanced with the times. Max Barmoy is selling maple syrup. He tapped all the trees in Meyersdale. Joan Christner is a chorus girl in Meyersdale's Copa Club. Carol Engle is hat-check girl there. Lois Klink is a traffic cop in Summit Mills. Donald Witt is janitor at Wellersburg school.
