Q4-555s 'fCominued from page 401 judging, or the selection of the better cows within the breeds, was an important job. Our main job this year was to determine how we, as young farmers, could get started in the dairy industry, and how we would test, feed and manage our herd after we had it. In Fruit Production we studied the management of a large apple orchard. In the fall it was the picking, packing, storing and selling of apples. Early spring brought on the job of renovating an old orchard, pruning, grafting, cultivating and fertilizing to make the trees produce good apples again. Spring is the time to spray, plant strawberries and other small fruits. In Forestry we studied the management of the Farm wood lot, tree identification, and mensura- tion. Field trips to maple producers's farms are always very interesting and well attended. In Farm Shop where all boys take part, some of the jobs that we do are as follows: woodworking, blacksmithing, rope work, cold metals, household mechanics, furniture repair and refinishing, power transmission, plumbing, tool fitting and identification, lettering and drawing, building plans, drainage, soldering, harness repair, repair and adjustment of farm machinery, electricity and concreting. Project work is in reality the final examination of boys studying vocational agriculture. Academic work would be of no value unless we could put it to a practical use. All boys were engaged in one or more phases of farming during the year.
