l During the year of 1940-1941 boys in the Department of Vocational Agriculture studied Poultry Production, Vegetable Gardening, Dairying, Fruit Production, Forestry and Farm Shop. Freshmen and Sophomore boys studied Poultry, Gardening and Shop. How to cull poultry or to separate the laying hens from those not laying was one of our first jobs. After we had our good birds picked out, we studied how to feed and house them properly. Early spring brought the problem of raising baby chicks to replace the birds in the laying house next fall. Sanitation and disease prevention plays an important part in any poultry program. ln Gardening our problem was to determine where and how to make our garden, what vegetables to plant and what were good varieties of those vegetables. ln the Spring we prepared our soil by proper tillage, fertilization and management. Seed planting, cultivation and the protection from insects and disease followed. Thejunior and Senior classes studied Fruit Production, Forestry, Dairying and Shop. In Dairy- ing we studied the many different breeds of cattle, their characteristics and adaptations. fC0nlin14ed on page 452 Page 40
