THE PEP 25 Gees ew s s as ee He quietly slipped to the boathouse, secured .1 small speed craft. and drifted out to sea. Here he awaited the accomplishment of their plans. It seemed like ages before he heard the faint put-put of an engine on a motor boat coming towards him. He pretended that he was a fisherman. and with an old raincoat Hung over his back he husied himself with the net until the boat had passed. But he had glanced at it. and saw Janette on it. held captive. with her mouth gagged. Suddenly, without warning, a thunder storm broke around him and the quiet night was nlled with sharp flashes of lightning and claps of thunder, Edwards boat got beyond his control. and suddenly the air was split with the sound of two boats smashing together. lfdward was unprepared for the shock and -7-W V - --2 -- - 7--V ---- -1- W - -2 -41, he found himself struggling in the water. Pitting his strength against the waves he finally managed to grasp the side of Dowlings hoat and pulled himself over- hoard. In a moment he was lighting with Dowling. while Janette stoor near by. horrified with fear. Dowl- ings strength soon weakened and Edward bound and gagged him and set the hoat at right. Then he gath- ered Janette in his arms and headed for home. It was two anxious parents that awaited the arrival of Janette. Janettes mother lowered herself so far as to apologize to Edward and actually kissed him. Jan- ettes father grasped his hand in a grip that hurt. Before long. the wedding of Janette and Edward was announced. And Edward whispered to Janette, as he slipped the ring on her finger, I told yOu I would rind a way. I.. THE PEP It was my hrst and wlll be my last rlde ln a lord and eyer SIDCC then I haye followed the hne art of walklng C IXENNIDY 33 THE FAST MAIL A freckled lad droye a pantlng HIVXGI' twenty mlles through ylrfln plne forests to drop a postal card lnto an obscure rural post olhce A falthtul country post master droye a buggy elghteen mlles oyer ruts and rocks to the nearest rallroad statlon where the card was whlsked aboard a roarlng llmlted traln All nlght armed mall clerks tolled by the dlm llght of swaylng lanterns as the huge traln thundered through the land scape At a great rallroad termlnal a poueh was loaded on a fast truck whleh dashed through the streets of the seethlng clty to an outlylng alrport Here the pouch was dropped IUIO Ia hlgh powered plane Plloted by the crack flyer of the serylce the shlp zoomed through storms hlgh oyer dangerous mountalns and uncharted stretches now dlpplng perllously as lf struck a hldden alr pocket now raclng bllndly ahead to destructlon or lts destlnatlon At another great clty a speedy truck plcked up the pouch contalnlng the postal and raced through lanes of traflic to a naaln post ofnce Here pale persplrlng clerks worked at top speed sortlng the mall Our partlcular card was shot through pneumatlc tubes and reached a branch office ln the suburbs Here If was re moved and turned oyer to a yeteran letter carrler Out lnto the drlylng raln of the mad summer storm plodded the falthful old publlc servant and deposlted the postal ln the mall box of a gaudy apartment house Late that afternoon a buxom blonde came home from the movles and plcked up the postal tlme Sleep under blankets eyery nlght Gus and me wlsh you was here Sophle LOVE GATE Mllly Loud Rutlege llyed IH the county of Santee ln the old hlstorle state of South Carollna Her par ents dled and she llyed wlth her aunt Fyellna Her brother ohn haylng graduated from a Northern Col lege returned home brlnglng wlth hlm a wlfe and the news that hls W1fCS brother was comlng for a XISII Mllly Lou thought she would llke to lmpress thls frlend of ohns Eugene Harraden so she lmplored Lola ohns wlfe to make her more lnodern They held thelr last sesslon behlnd locked doors Mllly s beautlful brown curls were shorn close to her head four HIITISY dresses dld what the coarse one she used to wear enforced by her aunt dld Her llps gleamed red and her eyes looked large outllned IU blaek Mllly Lous locket that she had always worn was hastlly flung around her neek on hearlng the approaeh of the car that was brlnglng lugene who was delayed on buslness Lugene had come to ylslt john beeause that was the pllee that the traee of hls mothers eldest brother had dlsappeared One day w hlle ohn w as absent from home lugene declded to go to Loye Gate a dangerous sw lmp to search for hls uncle He started off alone and after hours of frultless searchlng he gaye up and started hls horse for home or what he thought was home After many weary hours of wanderlng he found that he was lost Lost IH the swamp where feyer symptoms came upon one lmmedlately All nlght long he roamed around the sw amp scream lng and runnlng llke a mad man When day broke along the mountaln he was rescued oy a searchlng party headed by ohn Whlle dellrlous he dreamed of a glrl named Emllla and a Yankee soldler They were yery much IH loye and he had glyen her a loeket that eontalned hls plc ture Orders came from Vlfashlngton to report IITITTIC dlately and as he was yourneylng there he was kllled IH the swamp falllng lnto qulck sand When Eugene awoke Mllly who had nursed hlm ceaselessly showed hlm the locket that he spoke of durlng hls dellrlum Then she told ll1I'T1 that she had made up just to make an IIDPFCSSIOH and she left the room eomlng ba k agaln wlth her faee mlnus the cos metlcs Then he drew her down to hlm and confessed that he had always loyed her but he resented anythlng modern So when he wa feellng well they were marrled and as the old saylng goes Llyed happlly eyer after L IONTA 30 YOUTH WILL FIND A WAY Edward Parker a brlght sturdy youth of twenty was worklng hls way through eollege In the summer tlme he had a POSICIOH at Berkley Beach where hls rlch uncle owned many hotels and was noted for hls W1 ty s ylngs Edward Parker loyed anette Rowe perfect petlte blonde who was the only daughter of a wealthy banker She attended the same college as Ed ward dld ID the wlnter months anette and her parents always spent a great part of the summer at Berkley Beaeh and there the two young folks met agaln became re aequalnted three summers before But thls partlcular summer anette saw less and less of Edward because the company of a rlch young man was thrust upon her by her haughty mother who was qulte anxlous for her daughter to marry well Young Parker knew thls and though If was llke a stab of a sword he resolyed to wln janette some way Youth wlll find a way he mused to IIIIUSCII.
