In September, l956, seven bashful freshmen entered Metz High School to increase their knowledge and to remain for four, long, strenuous, but very happy years. These seven included, namelyg Gera Johnson, Doris Liles, Bette Finch, Dorothy HcGinnis,Richard Yeates Winifred Strait and James Cox. Two weeks after school started the sophomores initiated us and we were soon one of the crowd. Later,we gave a party for the benefit of the sophomores. Our class was increased by one when Louise Howard entered in December. g ' 4 1 We began our sophomore year with the same number of representatives in the fall of l957. We entertained the freshmen this year with an initiation party at the high school building. We put in nine months of study this year and besides the usual number of events, nothing extraordinary happened. ' In the fall of l95S, our class was decreased in number, when Winifred Strait moved to Newton, Kansas. ' This year, we chose Miss Gaines as our sponsor and we I soon were rehearsing for our junior class play, which was entitled,?The Blue Bag.H Miss Gaines gave a Christmas party at her home for our class and the' invited guests. ' The seniors and faculty were guests of the juniors on a trip taken to Rockaway Beach in the Czark region of Missouri. ' We began our final year on September 5, with six pupils. Louise Howard dropped out at the end of our junior year. This year we presented our senior play, HDon't Darken My Door.u I We were guests of the juniors on a trip this spring in our honor. We seniors went to Eldorado Springs and had our pictures taken on the morning of March first. Thus, our class, beginning as bashful freshmen, graduated as proud and dignified seniors. It was unusually small and I remember that Gene in his sophomore year was so set on getting to be on the first nine of the basket- ball team but alas! James Cox and all of his fancy playing made Gene look rather e1umsy.H Peggy Tough answered, nOh, Richard Yeates married someone but they were divorced within a year3'His wife charged him with smil- ing too much. She said that he smiled even when he was angry with her. Richard is working like a dog to pay the S100 a month alimony she asked. Then the conversation was centered around isuch little words as these: James Cox married Opal Bond when he graduated but they as a whole couldn't get along. They argued about who was the better basketball player. Even with his broken heart, James tried to forget Opal and applied his ability to play ball to a career. He is now basketball coach at the University of Missouri. Betty Finch, after her marriage to Francis Dawson a year be- fore decided that marriage wasn't exciting so she began her career as a journalist. She is now making great progress as a fashion editor of, the New York Times. Doris Liles and Homer Lyons are still sweethearts. Homer is a great medical doctor and Doris took nurses' training in the hospital in which he is an interne. She is an air hostess now. 1 Gera Johnson is a member of the United States Senate. Gera's practice as an orator in her senior year gave her a great lift in gaining this position. During our first year we were very sorry to be separated from one of our gang Beatrice King. D With this same number the next year,we chose Miss Ackenhausen a new member of the faculty, as our sponsor. As this was our secs ond year it was our time to give an initiation to the new group. It was held at Vernon Pryoris home, a member of our class. This year we lost two members of our class, John Stokley and James Seats, thus leaving us a group cf only fourteen. i we entered our junior year with fifteen members. Marguerite Stone was our new member but we soon lost three old members. They were Nellie Barker. Willard Kleitz and Ralph Nation. Our number now is only twelve. We chose Miss Bell as our sponsorand kept busy this year earning money to entertain the seniors with a trip. We sold candy at each basketball game, operated the food stands at the carnivals, presented the junior class play, HAmong the Starsn and the oneeact play entitled. HRudolph's Revengen. The pupils taking part in the latter were? Margery Rinehart, Nellie Barker, Evalyn Willsey, James Cox, Russel Clutter and Richard Yeates. We had several parties during our junior year. Miss Bell gave us a party after the dress rehearsal of HAmong the Starsd. We had a commercial club party in December. We also had one line party to the show and another to the skating rink. The date was chosen as November l7, The candidates for king and queen of the carnival were chosen from the various classes and the ticket sale determin- ed the lucky candidates, as was the usual custom. The candidates were as followsz freshman class, Mary Ellen Tough and Harold Clutter, sophomore class, Marjorie Foreman and Buddy Robinson, junior class, Gyneth Johnson and Vernon Pryorg senior class, Doris Liles and Richard Yeates, Since the sophomores won the race, the winning candidates were Marjorie Foreman'and Buddy Robinson.' The freshman class gave a play for the program. Those who were in the play were Marjorie Markello, Gene Summers, Mary Ellen Tough and Edward Stone. 'f l , The sophomores gave a play entitled, HCorn Fed Babies.H. Mrs. Opal Heatherly directed it and the characters were namelyi N Joyce Christy, Buddy Robinson, Willard Brown and Marjorie Foreman. 'The juniors gave a play in the study hall and it was very successful. I This carnival ended with the activity fund a little richerand with the students more enthusiastic about basketball. Our next carnival was given by the grade rooms on December 6. The candidates were chosen in the same way as for the first carni- val. Candidates were as followss lst and 2nd grades, Joe Liles and Ethel Wingate, 3rd and 4th grades, Peggy Tough and Wesley Riderg 5th and 6th grades, Gene Willsey and Lois Westerholdg 7th and Sth 8513215939 Neil Wilson and Sadie Sheddrick. The Upper Grades won the contest so Neil Wilson and Sadie Sheddrick were crowned king and queen of the second carnival of this year. This carnival did not end so profitably, however it gave the grade rooms a tidy sum and it profited the juniors in their food stand. Thus, another year has ended with the completion of two more annual carnivals.
