EIJIBATIUN The Class of 1957, can never repay this gentleman for what he has done for us in our four years at Metuchen. His contributions, not only in the field of athletics, but also in time and effort, have made him our friend and counselor as well as our teacher. The Board of Education will continue to make every effort to improve the Metuchen School System. The recent approval of a plan to compensate teachers to scale enables Metuchen to attract fine competent instructional addition to the many in- spired, and dedicated teachers presently in our system. The progress of our new high school is followed eagerly and hopefully for its scheduled opening in September of 1958. This will insure the return ofthe single session for all children and the elmination of the over-size class, - iw , K my This year's Board is composed of, left to rightg Mr. Edwin Stockwell, Mr. Attilio Di Pasquali, Mr. James P. We did not Consider our year's activities completely closed until Ann Breen and Sue Chapas were chosen Editors-in-chief of the Blue Letter and the Bulldog's Bark, respectively. Barbara Jen- kins was selected to be drum maiorette and Emily Weber, captain of the twirlers. June 18 was an important day for the class of '56, but no less important for the class of '57, for it was then that we truly became SENIORSI Many Seniors have walked through the honored Senior door since it was first designated as such in 1955, but neveraclass like the Class of '57, We elected our last president, Gary Ver Strate, and to aid him we chose John Perry, Vice President, Marge Gilman, Secretary, and Donna Rosenblum, Treasurer. - 1 However, our most outstanding feat was the fact that We Beat Highland Park. Muni- cipal Stadium fairly shook with our wild chanting of: We're the Class of '57 With our tried and true eleven. We lift a lasting mark, We beat Highland Park! George Washington Slept Here in Van Kirk Auditorium on the night of December7, when the Seniors presented this rollicking comedy by Kaufman and Hart. Bill Bashew was Senior Santa-and it was reported by a small bird that he was seen riding high with his reindeer on Christmas Eve. As March approached we were in the usual dither of last minute preparations for the Senior Dance, Sentimental Journey , our last class dance to Metuchen High School, We had no sooner recovered from this dance, than we were presented by the junior class with a lovely dance, the annual Junior- Senior Prom, Surely it can't be that our four years of high school have drawn to a close. Nowit is time to don our caps and gowns in prepara- tion for graduation, then to walk up and re- ceive the parchment scrolls which are- symbolic of our four years of work, fun and many fond memories. The Senior High handbook was a successful project of the Vice President Marsha Shapiro.JuliaMatuzsa and Mr. John Morgan were in charge of the fine assemblies, while the Treasurer, Dave Dietz, Secretary of Interior, Kit Neeley, and Secretary Harriet Lehrer were actively engaged in all the work of the council. Class representatives included Jerry Letson, Evelyn Byard, Juanita Smith, Ellie Gotthardt, Ann Frolund and Charlene Frye. The Junior High Student Council has also been busy. Their main function has been getting up a student court to take care of the behavior problems of the Junior High Students. This court consists of a chief justice and one judge from each of the three grades. Officers are: President Everett Rich Vice President Sharon Hollmann Secretary Sally Mostow HHH? A test at the end of a journalism course determines additions to the staff. The members prepare the monthly school paper which informs the students of items of interest and of the activities which occur around M, H, S. Annually, the Bark sponsors a dance, the football queen contest, and the choosing of a Senior Santa and Doll. The business staff consisted of the following: Advertising Manager-Louisa Jefferys, Business Manager-Barbara Ezyske, and Circulation Manager-Dee Ann Dasher. The Bark was among the first place winners at Columbia in March 1955 and March 1956. Its place in 1957 was not known when this Blue Letter went to press. These routines were not only the highspot of football games but of pep rallies as well. The brilliant blue and white trimmed uni- forms added much color to the spirited per- formances of this well organized group. The Seniors who have left our squad this year were: Barbara Jenkins, Emily Weber, Audrey Olechowski, and two flag-twirlers, Betty Herr and Rose Gammenio. Practice is the keynote which allows them to perform their intricate and coordinated routines. The twirlers will always be a special attraction at M.H.S. .Yu U THE BAND The Metuchen High School Band was under the direction of Mr. Condit Atkinson assisted by Mr. Anthony Romano who was instrumental director in the elementary schools. The marching band consisted of 55 pieces not including the twirlers. This organization played at varsity football games and at local parades. The concert band, which had 45 pieces, played in the Annual Music Festival in May and gave a concert for the patients at Roosevelt Hospital. The president of the band was Lance Fravel with Dave Aurelius as Vice President. Barbara Jenkins served as Drum Majorette and Secretary of the band. Ray Purnell acted as Drum Sergeant. The band is supported by a group of parents known as the Band Boosters with J. Hansen serving as president. - --' .f . .f . . -. ,D f 49 ' ,gif ' ' J Ju' Lf' :finer t. xi ' '--- ey - 1 : E ge, Livin it u this ear as our Varist Cheer- , X - if l g Y eg! The small margins of their games lost showed their team spirit and determination to win. They also proved that they are stron- gest and score the most points during the last quarter of the game. This has brought many a victory to the varsity cagers. Although the Bulldogs started their season with three losses against the powerful teams of Carteret, Sayreville, and Scotch Plains, they came back to outscore South Plainfield and Dunellen. After their second defeat to Sayreville, the Bulldog quintet took three in a row by trouncing Somerville 55-53, Scotch Plains 69-65, and an improved St. Mary's team 71-61. A look at the half way mark in the schedule proves another important point, that the boys have skill, and sportsmanship, and are learning the value of teamwork. The Varsity nine, with only four returning lettermen, started the season with a spanking victory over Scotch Plains, 8-3. But luck, and experience, ran out the follow- ing five games--all were lost. However, the varsity recovered its form in the seventh and eighth games with two spectaular wins-- Carteret downed, ll-3, and a decisive repeat over Scotch Plains, 12-2. Although beaten by Highland Park, the nine were victorious over St. Mary's l2-0, a win due largely to the great pitching of the Bulldog hurlers. Lady Luck again turned her back on the team with consequent losses to Sayerville, St. Peters, Jamesburg, and Highland Park. But a final spurt of power won a victory over Dunellen, 4-2. The record stands six wins, ten losses. Glancing back over that record again, note the scores. The wins were mostly run-a-ways, the losses were generally by a narrow margin.
