And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark, For though fromout our bourne of Time and Place The flood may hear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. METUCHEN: Bon Voyage and a most pro- vocative trip it should bel This school has been your snug harbor for some few years. The berth has been essentially a very easy one. QMy constant reminder that you'll never have it so good will now begin to make senseg The world is still your oyster, the pearls you get, however, will inevitably stem from how much you give - and not usually how much you take. The average elementary school graduate in a lifetime will earn Sll6,000g the average graduate of a high school in a lifetime will earn 3S165,000g the average graduate of a college in a lifetime will earn S268,000. A college education on the average costs S9,000. .. compare it with returns. What do you think? May your trip be a pleasant one, a profitable one, a socially-sensitive one. We, the class of 1956 have had many happy moments from our four year cruise. Perhaps the happiest of memories were from our last year. We still have memories of. . . working hard rehearsing the Senior Play. . .hustling through the crowded halls with our friends. . . marching in, respected, at assemblies . . . striving to reach that A' for Mr. Azzolina. The future will find us looking back on the fun we had in study hall or at the games. We will relive them over and over again. We will want to relive the anxiety of waiting in audience for the curtain to go up on our Senior Play. We will recall the choosing of a football queen, and a Senior Santa, or the cool co-ed's. By turning the pages of the book we can return to our years spent in high school, and recall our happy moments. 9 -Ml YY A v A lX .2 53 Q S ,X yyjgx xx X B its QQ? Sonja Larson M30 our able Seaman guide us 4 A , W 3 1 .while JUNIOR H I G H Afffffffffiff Seamen, keep us running true This year marks the end of a four year trip through M.H.S. by the class of 1956. Embarking in 1951, they have now reached their destination - graduation. lt was not always smooth-sailing as sched- ules were crowded because of double sessions. This year saw the return of most of our clubs and we shall always remember the fun we had participating in them. This year also saw the end of many activi- ties we were used to and the beginning of others. The Student Govt. saw a vast change and the basketball te'am was not able to have the advantage of practicing on its own court. New such as Glee Club, were added to the curriculum. Extra-curricular activities brought us to- gether with friends in many ways. Meetings were held in any vacant room that could be found and we had to be oh, so quiet, in order not to disturb the afternoon session. We rushed to put out the school paper, attend Student Council meetings and meet the deadlines for the yearbook. Planning club trips left many people in a frenzy, but yet this was all a part of our four year journey. Who could ever forget our accomplishments in the sports field and the enjoyment they brought us? Our graduating class will take great pride in the success of the senior play and often reminisce about their final high school prom. As our seniors leave these hallowed halls, they leave a part of themselves which will linger with us always. Many of these wonderful memories will be forgotten, but the following pages will keep alive high school recollections for us to look back upon. Z Z Y , 7 f ? Here comes the Metuchen High School Band! Llegantly dressed in snappy blue and white uniforms this unit marches forward led by the stately majorette Peg Dunham, In addition to hiking the spirit at rain drenched football games, the and participated in parades, tag days, and com- munity projects. The man who Plans all these activities is Mr. Atkinson, affection- ately known as Mr. A, who has instructed the band since its organization ten years ago. one wr' .,4-- SENIOR GLEE CLUB This year the Glee Clubs presented a Christmas Concert in addition to the Spring Concert. This was the first year that there has been a Christmas program for the public. The program consisted of religious carols and novelties. Also the club's mem- bership was enlarged and the A Cappgll, Choir acquired many new voices. All this was possible under the able supervision of Mr. Azzolina. Mr. Azzolina supervised the purchase L - if Y..,- of risers which have long been needed for stage performances. He planned several field trips in order for the club to acquire a deeper appreciation of music of alltypes. The officers who have helped to make this such a successful year were Presi- dent Judy Gottshall, Vice-Presidents Julius Balog and Noel Mendola, Secretary Candace Thomas, Treasurer Margaret Dunham, Lib- rarian Betty Poandl, and Stage Manager Mickey Vigil. Bilfl J YA -if A14 m H6 0 HJIORPHGH This year, because of the double sessions, the Junior High' Glee Club had a new vocal teacher, Mrs. Parle. She has done a wonderful job of organization. Mrs. Parle proved herself an asset by directing the club in its varied activities. The Junior Glee Club participated in both the Christ- mas Concert and the Annual Spring Concert. Their officers, President Charlene Frye, Vice-President Richard Hyldahl, and Secretary Betsy Bashew helped to plan an assembly program for the Senior High. ln addition to the officers, each class had a repre- sentative, Sharon Hallamann represented the seventh grade, Sally Mostow was selected from the eighth grade, and Betty Pan took care of ninth grade business. GLEE CLUB FOGTLIGHTERS The Footlighters presented 'Ring Round the Moon for their annual play this year. The club also presented several programs for the Junior High, Senior High, and exchange ass- emblies. As a school service, the Footlighters set asidea sum of money for a stage rug in the new school. The he-man behind the scenes is Mr. John Morgan, always complacent through all trials. He was ably assisted by President Helen Demarest, Vice-President Donna Rosen- blum, Secretary Jerry Letson, and Treasurer Janice Gainfort. SENIGRP TROLS JU ICJRP TRQLS The Senior Patrols consisted of several able-bodied young men upon whom fell the responsibility of safely channeling their fellow students through the halls, This task was accomplished expertly by the pat- rols under the leadership of their captain, Don Burton, and their faculty advisor, Mr. Jackler. This feat was even more admirable due to the fact that courtesy has prevailed on the part of the patrols. The members recognized the importance of courtesy as a companion to safety. Most problems have arisen from poor self-discipline. For the solution of such problems, the patrols worked closely with the Guidanceand Judic- iary Departments. Under the helpful supervision ofthe fac- ulty advisor, Miss Brodzil, the Junior High Patrols successfully guided the students through the halls and helped to prevent much of the confusion which naturally de- velopes in most schools, Measures were taken to make sure that all the rules and regulations of Metuchen High were carefully followed. Linder the watchful eyes of Co-captains Rex Cox and James Van Winkle, the patrols functioned as a co-operative unit. Ably assisting the two captains were Eric Nissen, liugene Perish, Hoe Lovas, Horst Ruckert, Sandy Perry, Sally Herb, Dick Hyldahl, Joan Hughes, and Brenda Karchik. SENIOR WRITE-UPS: R, Jochen, B. What Francis Bacon has said in his essay Of Studies' is all very true, but what he has forgotten to mention is that in order to have a well rounded character, a person must have some type of athletics in his life. Although it is unfortunate that there is no inter-mural competition at Metuchen, there none-the-less is a fine athletic program that this year saw thirteen teams represent Me- tuchen in inter-schoolastic competition. Metuchen has done surprisingly better than might be expected even with the ever present burden of double sessions The Bulldogs have fielded strong teams in every sport even though potential athletes have been lured away by Jobs and free afternoons The class of 56 produced a pair of three lettermen B111 Smith and Jerry Snyder who spearheaded football basketball and baseball while Junior George Fig equalled this feat Right on a par with the players but often overlooked are the fine quartet of headcoaches at Metuchen probably the finest set in Bull dog history ln Mr Leo Mc Glynn Mr Jim Kelly Mr John Cassell and Mr George Hart land Metuchen has three coaches who are tops in both instructing and understanding the players Let us however not forget the fine spade work that is done with the younger athletes by Mr Bob Wlthey and Mr B111 Blindow -if y . y . Coach Leo Mc Glynn's eleven started off the season on the right foot by blanking Atlantic Highlands on the strength of a 19 point second half, 26-0. After dropping a 35-0 contest to an inspired Dunel- len team, Metuchen overcame North Arlington, 6-0, on a fourth quarter score by Dick Kolbert. ln a game played during a driving rainstorm, St. Peter's squeezed by the Bulldogs 7-6. Playing its finest half of football of the season, Me- tuchen got back on the winning trail by overcoming Rum- son, 21 - 14. However, Shore Conference Champion Keyport decisioned Metuchen 13-0. ln the season's homestretch, Metuchen put together back-to-back victories. Bill Smith scampered for seven yards to produce the lone score in a 7-O victory over Scotch Plains. ln a 23-6 trouncing of Sayrevil1e,Metuch- en played inspired ball, capitalizing on Bomber mistakes, By virtue of a Saturday snowstorm, the Highland Park game was moved to the traditional day for tradi- tional gamesg Thanksgiving Day. When Dick Kolbert ran 27 yards up the middle for a score with just four minutes gone in the game, it looked like a Bulldog triumph. The Owls came back, however, to eke out a 13-7 win. BASKETBALL .... With the six top men gone from last year's varsity, the '55-'56 campaign proved to be a rebuilding year for the Bulldogs. The only ex- perienced varsity men back to start the cam- paign were Jerry Snyder and Bill Smith, With Cecil Jackson not able to play in the early part of the season, Metuchen was minus a big man and was forced to learn a free- wheeling, five-man weave type of offense. When Cec returned after Christmas, the Bull- dogs had the needed scorer and rebounder but a pivot-type offense had to be mastered. The big weakness of the team was itsinabil- ity to shoot fouls. Poor foul shooting lost at least half-a-dozen games for Coach Kelly's men. For the season, Cec Jackson was the team's high scorer as he rolled through the campaign with 30 point per game average, Dick Kolbert was second in average and his injury in mid season dealt the team a major blow. x tw! The running and passing of Joe Prehodka and the fine playing of Dick Groben, George Gergio, John Uchran, Joe Lov- as, and Jack Hawkins highlighted the season. Hurt by the loss of three of its top play- ers to the varsity, the junior varsity football team posted a one won, three lost, and one tied record. However, the record does not give the whole story, since all opposing teams had jun- iors on them while Metuchen had an all soph- omore squad. The junior Bulldogs opened the year with a 6-6 tie with Sayreville and a 19-7 loss to St, Peters followed. Lone triumph came against an outclassed Dunellen team by the score of 35-0. Coach George Hartland's crew then lost to Plainfield 35-0, and closed out the campaign in a tight loss to the Highland Park reserves 14-13.
