Vve turn our gaze to tlie distant liorizon to see wbat lies before us. For the present our duties bere are done and someone else must now talce up tbe watcb. Have we really done a good job? Loolc baclc and try to remember. See it you can recall what ill winds led us oft our course-or perbaps wbat Trades lcept us gliding smootlily in spite ol a turbulent sea ot trouble. As we scan tbe ocean of lite a realization comes to us. We lcnow tbat we will never be able to see into tbe future. All depends upon bow well we bave accomplisbed our taslcs in tbe past. We lmow but tbis one tbing-our present journey is nearing its end, and we must be ready tor the years to come. Stand by now and cast a sbarp eye over the sea,-a sea as calm as an inland lalce on a warm summeifs nigbt. Truly tbis is a niglit of nigbts in itself. THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A METRO GRADUATE Editors note: XVith a change in the course mentioned in this autohiography, this could very well he the story of any student graduating from Metropolitan this year. r-4l14r1'P-4:11 Metropolitan really means something to me. That may sound just like another story to you or perhaps a story that seems to have heen written especially to inliu- ence my instructor in helping me to graduate. hut, let me tell you why it means so much to me. Before I knew anything aloout Metropolitan and its courses, I knew nothing of photography. Except tor a little Brownie camera and the drug store around the corner developing and processing the film for me, lknew nothing more. Well, after linding out about this school and starting in the wonderful course oi Commercial photography, I really advanced, slowly hut surely. in my tirst term here l learned how to make a contract print and that was a fantasy to me. Alter that came enlarging. retouching and finally camera work. which seemed to me to he the most interesting phase of all. Then a course in art was given to me to help me out in my composing of photo- graphs. After that came the study oi related photography which consisted of theory and practical work. That course included many notes and dictations and plenty oi homework. Then l finally reached my eighth term. I started to make my project for graduation which consisted of fifteen photo- graphs to he passed on loy our advisory hoard. I finished my project hefore the scheduled time and was then otiered the position of photographer on our school year book, Metropolis. Aiter heing assigned as photography editor of Metropolis, loads ol' responsibility were placed on my shoulders. That experience taught me self-confidence and other things that a photographer needs in order to he successful. This was accomplished in a shorter time and with less hardships than it would have taken if I had had to go through the same thing in the outer world. I really owe a lot to this school which has given me all the experience and knowledge I need, to embark on a career of Com- mercial Photography. in times like these when our country is at war and many of our students are leaving for the services, including yours truly, I helieve that this school has trained all our students in different trades for all sorts of positions in lite, which in peace time as Well as in war time, will help huild a hetter world with hetter people in it. AL BERLINSKY Editor of Photography
