GILDA CARANICO Q FRANKLIN KELLER PRINCIPAL MESSAGE TO METROPOLITAN When I look hack, as I sometimes do, upon my own early school days, I think oi those staid old maxims that I had to copy out so pain- stakingly. Like other old-fashioned things, they made no great impression upon my youthful mind. Recently I was reminded of one of them hy the retiring British Consul in New York. He told how it was engraved on the silver mug out of which he drank his mill: from as early as he could remember: MTO he what you are, to become what you are capable of hecoming, is the end of life. He thought in those days that it was rather stuffy, hut as life went on, it became more and more significant, a greater and greater truth. I too, as I talk to our hoys and girls, to Honor Society students. to visiting graduates, most of whom are now in the armed services, realize that they are fine people hecause they always are, in the very hest sense, uVVhat they are,H and are continually trying Uto hecome what they are capable of hecomingf' Truly, that is the goal of life. ' FRANKLIN J. KELLER FRANK H. PAINE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT , TEACHERS IN CHARGE LOUIS WEISS MONROE BUILDING HARRY WINSTQN ' IVIADISDN BUILDING OUR ADVISORS ADVISORS OF THE MAIN BUILDINC FACULTY SIGNATURES C L S T S MIADISQN AND MONROE ADVISGRS ARTHUR UI-ILICH PRESIDENT SENIOR CLASS , A FAREWELL TO METROPOLITAN Vve, the graduating class of June l944, are ready to venture into the next phase of our lives. Now we go out into the world to build upon our high school foundation and seelc future happiness. Alter graduation from grammar school, we called upon Metropolitan to help us estalolish this foundation. Some of us had made plans Ioefore entering Metropolitan. Un the other hand, there were some of us who hadnytg to these students Metropolitan held out a guiding hand. Coun- selors, as well as trained advisors, consulted us individually. They delvecl into our personalities and discovered our aptitudes and interests. They let us try the vocation they thought would prove hest suited to us. We put our faith in them loecause they counseled us, not as paid teachers who had a duty to perform, hut as men and women who were interested in us and wanted to see us placed where we could develop our talents and find eventual happiness. Vve feel that the advisory system helped us immeasurahly and are grateful for the help. We are being graduated at a time when the world is at war to secure freedom. No douht some of us will serve in the armed forces of our country while others will haclc up the fellow with the gun hy producing in industry. But, regardless of what position we hold, we will try to malce Metropolitan proud of us, proud of the fact that she has produced well- trained American citizens. ARTHUR UHLICH , nw Yw,,Q,gg f f. Unlilce many other similar organizations, lVletropolitan's Honor Society seelcs the well-rounded student. Standards of admission are not unusually high, hut they are unusually varied. Satisfactory scholarship is fundamen- tal, hoth in shop and academic worlcg commendable character traits are essentialg good health and good attendance are required, and finally, a moderate amount ol service to the school community is needed. Vvhile the Honor Society does not exclude the very hright student or the very active student, students with either of these traits alone, will not secure admission. The Honor Society is still young, and still growing. lts goal is not a restricted membership ol 50 or 60 students, hut ol l,000, 2000, even 3,000 students: its goal is to transform the Honor Society into an Honor School. ETROPOLITAN K LEIDOSCGPE Gut ot the inner clepths of a thriv- ing Metropolis comes the never encl- ing din that characterizes a large city. The roar of the elevated over- heacl, the cry of the street peclcller selling his wares, the hoom ancl cranlc of countless pulleys along the husy waterfront, the clatter and clin ot passing trattic, are all part of the multitudinous noises so familiar to Father Kniclcerhoclcer. Just as New Yorlc City is recog- nized hy its fervent nature, so is Nletropolitan, in its own way. To us, lvletropolitan is a city in itself. To illustrate, let us transplant the scene. As we enter Metropolitan, we talce notice ol the steacly vihrant hum of the various shops lausy with the ac- tivities within. To our iight, in the hoathuilcling shop, we hear the whin- ing of an electric wood saw engaged in cutting wood which will presently be part of a boat. Above the noise of the saw can be heard the steady beating of hammers which are slowly but surely moulding the ribs of a sturdy hull. We move on and mount the stairs. As we pass the machine shop, the clanlcing of bali-peen hammers is suddenly upon us, combined with the ceaseless hum of lathes and drill- presses busy shaping pieces of metal into instruments of production. We look into the next room. marked Declan and see a replica ot a shipvs bridge. We notice boys in one corner in a knot-lying session, while others in another corner are waving signal Hags and correcting each other,s errors. On the third Hoor we continue. We enter the beauty culture room and see skillful hands busily en- gaged in manicuring. As though keeping time with these hands, can lne liearcl tlie continuous cliclc ol tlie liarlmerqs slwears trimming tl1e lmair ot a lellow stuclent. Vve move on, llut sometliing We liear malces us pause. For a moment we tl1inlc we llear music. Vve continue on our trip anal reacli tlle top floor. Tliere we are laeclconecl on lay tlwe Hdit-clatu ot tlie raclio cle- partment. Tlmese raclio lmoys ot lvletropolitan are tlwe tuture eyes M and ears ot our army, navy. coast guard and merchant marine. Further on down the hall we no- tice powerlul lights radiating from a room and move on to investigate. The sign above the door reads Com- mercial Photography. As we enter we see a pretty girl posing lor a lasllion shot, and surrounded by a battery ol lights, while a photography student focuses the scene through the Ql'OUf'lClglElSS ol CHHTSFH. Thus the city of Metropolitan has been presented to us. Vve have seen the future citizens ol tomorrow pre- paring to go out into a war-torn world as trained and capable men and women. They have been taught to adjust themselves to any problem which will befall them and also to help malce an everlasting peace lor the present and future generations. That may sound just like another story to you or perhaps a story that seems to have heen written especially to inliu- ence my instructor in helping me to graduate. hut, let me tell you why it means so much to me. Before I knew anything aloout Metropolitan and its courses, I knew nothing of photography. Except tor a little Brownie camera and the drug store around the corner developing and processing the film for me, lknew nothing more. Well, after linding out about this school and starting in the wonderful course oi Commercial photography, I really advanced, slowly hut surely. in my tirst term here l learned how to make a contract print and that was a fantasy to me. Alter that came enlarging. retouching and finally camera work. which seemed to me to he the most interesting phase of all. Then a course in art was given to me to help me out in my composing of photo- graphs. After that came the study oi related photography which consisted of theory and practical work. That course included many notes and dictations and plenty oi homework. Then l finally reached my eighth term. I started to make my project for graduation which consisted of fifteen photo- graphs to he passed on loy our advisory hoard. I finished my project hefore the scheduled time and was then otiered the position of photographer on our school year book, Metropolis. Aiter heing assigned as photography editor of Metropolis, loads ol' responsibility were placed on my shoulders. That experience taught me self-confidence and other things that a photographer needs in order to he successful. This was accomplished in a shorter time and with less hardships than it would have taken if I had had to go through the same thing in the outer world. I really owe a lot to this school which has given me all the experience and knowledge I need, to embark on a career of Com- mercial Photography. in times like these when our country is at war and many of our students are leaving for the services, including yours truly, I helieve that this school has trained all our students in different trades for all sorts of positions in lite, which in peace time as Well as in war time, will help huild a hetter world with hetter people in it.
