The dust coagulates. Slowly the image takes shape. The human is formed and takes his place in the world. The pendulum swings. The clock ticlcs off the years. Yet, there is always time, as we go through life, to notice the stars and the clouds above us, the earth and the grass heiow us. There is always time for the brave to protect the Weak, the rich to aicl the poor. There is always time to create new things: to huild a better world. Life moves on to its close. Dust returns to dust, and though the physical evidence disappears,-fa spark remains, a contrihution to the evolution of society. The sand pours: the hands on the clock spin: the moon appears, hut soon dissolves in the morning mist. Life and time go on. The sand is sifting fast through the hourglass. ALVIN SISKIND W FRANKLIP J. KELLEP PRINCIPA TQ THE SENIQR CLASS Even those who may not have read the novels of Dorothy Canfield Fisher, delightful for hoth their story-telling and their serious purpose, will he interested in a recent statement in which she speaks to every boy and girl in a vocational school: Hslcill, which can he acquired only through effort, persistent and purposeful enough to merit the name of worlc, is the only medium which allows the operation ol our creative instinct to shape and form the raw materials of life, from mud to human governments, from personal rela- tionships to wood and steel and stonef, Vocational high school is the place where you acquire slcill hy learn- ing to worlc. This is the place Where you satisfy the creative instinct hy shaping and forming wood into boats, and steel into machines, paper into pictures, and strings and brass into heautiful sounds. And now, in Metrop- olis, you are forming white pages into lovely sentiments and delightful memories, that in the years to come, will remind you of the happy days when you were learning not only to worlc hut to form lasting friendships and to thinlc wholesome thoughts. FRANKLIN J. KELLER FRANK H. PAINE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TEACHERS IN CHARGE JOSEPH J. SCHELLING S. S. BROOKLYN LOUIS WEISS HARRY VVINSTON IVIONROE BUILDING MADISCJN BUILDING PHE FACULTY OUR FACULTY MADISON AND IVIDNRDI MAIN BUILDINGA ,-,I..... BUILDING fx I www-. I f I' ' ' af S OUR ADVISORS These home-room topics are their pets fThey,re really not so boring, Attendance, Punctualityn . . . Each clay you hear me snoring. They ash for money all the time, fYou,cl think that they were misers, For worthy causes quite sublime. Yes-thus do our aclvisers. We've seen them every clay for years, W8,I79 grown to love their faces, And as we turn the page, one hears Each voice go through its paces. Real cornracleship has been their aim, fAncl donyt think we don,t know it, The seed they've planted is our fame, 1t's up to us to grow it!!! ALVIN SISKIN D THEY DO NOT FIGHT IN VAIN In times like these, one is forced, whether he will or not, to reflect on what values there are to helieve inf-fthe rest of the world, all else is in chaos. It is the common decision of the United Nations that the dignity of man, the rights of individuals, the friendship and mutual consideration of peoples are the things of value and are worth fighting for. We, in Metropolitan, can well understand and heartily affirm these aims. It has ever been our wish to tive with one another in amity, to respect differing ideas, to enjoy each other,s company and to pursue our individual tasks, without being hlind to the desires and rights of others. For four years we have strived to achieve these aims. We have not com- pletely succeeded. We made mistakes just as the world did. But it has awakened to its past errors and we in turn, heing a part of a greater whole, have seen ours, as well. The trials through which we have passed,-the school as well as our nation, have not heen in vain. The hour of need has welded a common and harmonious humanity and together we will go forward to win the vic- tory tor the huiiding of a new world. JACK COHEN To Qur Men in Service A DREAM: Rich, imperisiiainle soil, Broad lakes Rustling branches Whispering grass Melodious Birds. Peace. A HOPE: Small, quiet headlines Contented lives, Beautiful world Happy futures, Our men are Back! A CERTAINTY: . Strong, powerful men Clear-thinking leaders - Invincible machines Impregnable strongholds Competent fighting forces Victory. A DEDICATION : Our boys, now men Overpowering men Brave men. Peace .... Our men are Back .... Victory. ALVIN SISKIND EDWARD FITZGERALD PRESIDENT SENIOR CLASS A Farewell to Nietropolitanz This is a momentous periocl in the lives oi those oi us who are now gradu- ating lrom INIetropolitan. It is not just an occasion on which we receive our well- earned diplomas and set forth upon a life of turmoil and uncertainty. It is not a situation in which we hope to find a joh-'any jolal Vve Icnow what we want: we are trained for the type of job we want. and we will get the position we want -do or cliet Today more than ever, it is of the utmost importance that we receive and assimilate the proper training. so that we too, may help in every possible way to enct this terrihle war ancl preserve clenlocrafy lor all time. Qioocl training' and good workmanship wallc hancl in hancl. I thinlc we all owe a cleht of gratitude to the many Fine teachers who have given slcill and craftsmanship for our chosen trades ancl most of all, lor their con-V geniality, which makes for hetter cooperation and interest on the part of the student. Last. hut not least, a ioncl farewell to Metropolitan. We came here with hope: we leave with pride and confidence. Some of us will join the armed forces: others will serve in the army of procluctiong hut no matter where we go or what we clo, we will always he grateful for the encouragement and training which we have received here at Iwietropolitan Vocational Hgh School. THE SENIORS OF JUNE 1945 Remember May The First 1 A challenge to our memories, some folks are always making. I sometimes stop to wonder 'bout the liberty they're taking. The Alamo-Remember itll the men would always say, They printed signs, poetic lines We can't forget the day. Pearl Harbors been attackedfn, they screamed- We'll not forget t That it was ever possible's a very doubtful fact. Remember Pearl Harborn is what we'll always see'-1 It gets me sore, what is it for? This forceful fallacy. One slogan, though, I'll ne'er forget--It's etched deep in my brain It's printed there in brighter tights than Remember the Maine. Its awful, dazzling, blinding light has put me at my worst, Its pointed spear is tipped with fear- HRemember May the First! I in You can't scare me with silly talk ,bout finishing on time, lust foolish words don't mean a thing, they aren't worth a dime. My project isn't tough, you see, just keeps me on the go: Fact it's a cinch, it's just a pinch .... Am I worried? Oh, no! I I Oh, foolish words, unthoughtful words, you nearly caused my end! You would have, too, if not my ways I presently did mend. For, when the month of April came, and found me barely started, Those flaming words rung through the herds. And idleness departed. I I his act! 1 Remember May the First tick, toctz, Remember May the First. The day was coming so darn fast that I was fit to burst! Oh, gosh, it,s almost done I think, my proiect's near complete The day's so near fm gripped with fear, But it can,t have me beat. Remember May the First tick, tock--it's going to drive me mad, The constant throbbing of the clock is too much for this lad, But here it is. my proiect's done, the fudge has quenched his thirst. Now try forget-I even yet- URemember May the First! TE P0 The family cloclc vihrated, screeching its unwelcome alarm. To John, who was imhedded in quilts, it seemed to loolc hideous, ironical. It was there for the sole purpose of thwarting his happiness, compelling him to leave hed. He just wouldn'tl Only ten minutes--so what? He always got there early anyway. Simply slip his head under the covers, that's all. Oh, that pillowl At night it never felt right. He couldn't even place his head in an agreeahle position, hut now regardless of where he lay, it felt so comforting. His face slid into the creases -those warm, inviting creases. He could no longer resist it. Caressingly. John Brest encircled the pillow with his arm and pulled it closer to his face, already lost in the white warmth. He turned and ruhhed his face until finally all mo- tion ceased. It was so good .... urlohn, John, c'mon, get up out of there. It's twenty after. C'mon, get up. Oh, huh-what? O.K. fm gettin' up. I'II he right in, Sue. Susan turned around. unconcerned, and carelessly shuffled out of the room, her loose slippers scraping and hanging a hollow sound on the cold Hoor of the house. Gee, it's cold, hut what's the use? You gotta get up anyway. Oh, what a rotten feeling! So tired. so cold. so miserahle and still ya gotta go to worlc. Oh, the cloclc. I gotta get out of here. lt's lateln Ain't got time. Sue. just coffee. With a muffin partially protruding from his mouth he whizzed into the hedroom and dashed hack, coat and hat on his arm. In a single gulp the steaming liuid had disappeared. Darn it, do you always have to malce coffee so hot? Vvell, so long, I gotta hurry. Sue. evidently accustomed to such hehavior, nodded and sighed, Will he ever change? -Late again, hafta hurry again, cold again-I dunno, will it ever change? Oh well, wh:-1t's the use? Ah, the suhway at last. The air from down there certainly feels warm. Gosh, there's the train. I hope I malce it. This is just lovely. I hafta change a dollar. I'll just malce it though. There, I'm in after all. Now I can relax for two stations. Relax? VVho's that horing in from the rear? Who put the suitcase on my foot? Who grahhed my hanger? Gosh, fm swaying at very precarious angles. I might topple over any minute. The swaying--to and fro, side to side, my stomach. Oh that coffee didn't agree with the muffin! Nauseous, miserahle, crowded, unhappy-will she stop polcing that feather into my mouth? Ah. the station. lt stopped! Temporary relief. Relief? The pressure is increasing. The feather is ticlcling. My lunch is on the fioor. More still coming! How can they he so inhuman? Started, can't hreathe, stomach aches, head hangs, sick, unhappy, tired .... The perpetual rolling soon hecame a dull pain that was almost unhearahle. Finally his station. In a moment he was in the midst of a pushing, scramhling crowd. All he could thinlc of was air, the cold, exhiiirating air. He could see light'-only a matter of minutes now. Ahhl the air at last-. G'morning Sam, how's she running? The Negro elevator operator, expres- sionless, pulled the cahle which jolted the car and started it on its slow, dreary climb. Then he regarded Mr. Brest and answered merely with a forced smile. How- ever, John did not notice he was admiring the newly added Hart Workn on the gritty sides of the unpainted car. The pulleys winced and squeaked under the terrific strain. The hum of the motor was a constant buzz of irritation. The only con- soling sound was the movement through space--the continuous pulling of the cable. It seemed to John so steady and reassuring that he forgot his feelings and was brought back to earth only by the sudden stoppage of movement. Eight o'clock on the dot. Well, what's a few minutes after mean anyway? Just time to change and start work. uC'mon, John, get at the bench. They've started rolling in already. O.K., l'm coming. The work begani Dip it in the acid, out of the acid, in the acid, out of the acid, in, out, in, out. Loosen the spring, regulate the spring, tighten the spring. ln, out, loosen, regulate, tighten, loosen, regulate, tighten. Add more acid, add more water, add more water, add more acid .... The smell was starting. His head began to knock bringing that familiar feeling back once more. ln, out, banging: tighten, loosen, banging: loosen, tighten, banging. Minutes, hours, tools-minutes, hours, acid, sick-minutes, minutes, minutes. Time. dip it, time, screw it, time. Keep it steady, keep in time. Don't let it pile, no time, no time. Keep in rhythm, get the timing. Timing, timing'-time-time-time-1 Lunch, more work, more dipping, more screwing, more everything. The day, for John, dragged through a miserable existence. Two o'cIock, dipping, 3 o'clock, regulating, 4 o'clock tightening, 5 oyciock haiieiujahl Dressing, Changing, subway, riding, walking, steps, stairs, doors, opening, closing: home. 5 U 'Lo. Sue. l'll be right in. Eating was a mechanical operation for John. As soon as he had finished he felt as though a great burden had been removed from his mind. 'Tm gonna rest for a half hour before I go tonight. I don't care. Oh, John, must you go? It won't matter if you miss one night. You need a rest. No sir, the longer I go to school the less I work in that smelly rat-trap. I gotta make somethin' of myself yet. You can't imagine what it's like doing that kind of work every day. Sometimes I think fm going mad! If I didn't have the one thought of what I'II be doing when I finish school and leave this job, I don't think I could stand it. uvvell, John, lie down for a half hour. I'II wake you up in time.u No, thanks, I'Il just sit here and relax. Ir'Il be better that way. John's eyes closed and he sat in a relaxed position. Not one muscle of his body moved. All his tenseness had disappeared as his head fell back. The light from the room struck the upper part of his face, disclosing a serene, peaceful look shadowed by falling strands of his jet-black hair. JACK COHEN IVIETROPOLIS STAFF Faculty Advisor-INIr. His intelligence uncultivated, man lmew no way to comhat the unfriendly phenomena of fire and water. For countless centuries he observed the fallen twigs and logs that Hoated with ease on streams and rivers, and more centuries passed loefore he recognized the possihility of constructing a successful sailing vessel hy hollowing a log. By gradual degrees, oars or steering wheels were added, and sails were hoisted: larger and sturdier ships were made to endure the strains of longer and more perilous journeys. Kings and queens, with lust for power, new lands, new routes to distant points, gold and spices, encouraged ship construction. They recognized the benefits and profits ol sea commerce as compared with the advantages of land caravans. They sent forth triumphant ships to seelc these new treasures. Little was expected of the seaman oflthat erag if he was adventurous, hold and alole-lzmodied, he was qualified. And so hegan the colorful tradition of the sea, to he passed on from generation to generation. After the coming of the Industrial Revolution, the ship of timhered hulls and sails slowly vanished. In its place rose the modem, mechanized majesties of the deep . . . science's more complicated contrihution. To the hoys of Metropolitan this heritage will pass. Here in snug harhor our men prepare to carry on. ln deck, machine, engine, radio and hoat-huilding shops we are molding the mariners of tomorrow. Endless time has proven us to he steadily raising our level ol existence.. . . from the miserable, clumsy cave-man era to the shrewd, distasteful middle-ages which finally gave way to our contemporary times. Thus the people of the earth, en masse, have continuously partalcen of the worlds offerings and then were lost in the earth's vastness when each single contrihution was devoured. Lilce a struggling, successful actor grown unpopular hecause of his loudding smug, over-confidence, such was the history of man. The cave man individual slowly freed himself from his lowly existence to give hirth to the new man who made use of his greatest weapon,-his thinlcing facul- ties--to discover the advantages of clanning. Man molded together and thereafter developed a contest.-a hattle of wits, which offered power as a iaclcpot. The late of millions was heing controlled hy few and thou- sands no longer anticipated the coming of a new day-each dawn brought only misery and suffering to satisfy the desire of a minority group. Beliefs and feelings now increasingly divided. Yet, in scattered directions, a new idea was loeing cultivated. Those few who grasped the new idea of unionism and cooperation planted a seed that grew very slowly hut re- tained its significance. Equality and freedom from tyranny resulted from that new ideaQand then the very heginning of the hirth of the democracy that we lcnow today was conceived., Today man is still divided: the world is still a far cry from an ideal Utopia, yet he need not despair.-for with all the unloalanced living, there is a definite direction which he has repeatedly tried to follow. His aims point toward that distant Shangri-La that, we loelieve, is definitely ap- proaching. The people of yesterday have given the people of today the will for progress, and it is for us. today, to olzler the same to the future. Time is ours now: there is much to he done.
