- Volume Fifty Two Metropolis High School Metropolis, Illinois The Final Illohmet Dedication It is with distinct pleasure the 1981 Illohmet yearbook dedicates its final volume to MHS English instructor Keith Kossow, who this fall begins his tenth year at Metropolis High School. During his teaching career, Mr. Kossow has taught Business English, Mass Communications, and all four levels of English. In addition, he has advised the yearbook and school newspaper since 1974-75. Mr. Kossow graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1972 and immediately joined the staff at MHS. During his tenure here he has also served as advisor for the WKYX Broadcasting Club and the MHS Key Club. The Illohmet commends Mr. Kossow for the high quality of instruction and years of dedication he has devoted to the student body at Metropolis High School. _____________________________________________J 4 Keith F. Kossow 5 Memories Past Future Dreams The 1981-82 academic year will witness a multitude of new and exciting chapters in the life of Metropolis Unit District One. Paramount to these changes will be the moving from the old building of Metropolis High School at 1004 Catherine to the recently constructed site on North Avenue. In addition to the switch of campuses, the MHS Trojans complete the metamorphosis for the 1980's and future decades by becoming the Massac County Patriots. The following pages provide both a brief synopsis of roads traveled in addition to a preview for those that lie ahead. While history teaches that it is unwise to abandon those memories seeded in the past, the future, in terms of our educational facilities, represents a burning beacon for generations to come. -M 9 ADMINISTRATION Unit One School Board First Row: Charles Barfield, Jr., Terry Foster, President; Paul Wittig. Winners of the Ugly Day Contest were Helen Rhymes, SuVonne Smothers, and John Dunn. In the Egg Bowl competition, Queen Jimmy Casey retired his crown to the new reigning Queen, Mike Monkman. The student body and faculty agreed that Ugly Day and the Egg Bowl contributed to the fun and excitement of Homecoming Week. Students assembled at the Massac County Court House and snaked their way to Dever Field where Queen Tracy ignited the towering inferno. As flames licked at the night sky, students danced the night away to the latest sounds of Destiny. The next evening the Trojans kept the spirit alive by overpowering the Ballard County Bombers, 30 to 27. The game was a lasting tribute to one of the finest Homecoming weeks in MHS history. 72 73 Hi' r °o Jr. Civitan Sponsors Mistletoe Ball The MHS Gym came to life on Dec. 19 as the Jr. Civitan sponsored the annual Mistletoe Ball. The theme for this year's dance was Christmas in the Mountains. The students danced to the music dee-jayed by the Heartbreakers. Members of Jr. Civitan served refreshments in the lobby throughout the evening. 76 77 Seniors Celebrate at Fort Massac On Thursday, Sept. 18, the Class of 1981 assembled at Fort Massac State Park for the annual Senior Day picture taking antics. Climbing trees and mounting the statue were among some of the daring positions the more uninhibited seniors achieved. Thanks to Cardinal Studios the day's fun is captured perfectly on these pages. With seven wins the Trojans totaled the second highest number of victories in a season in MHS history. The team thrilled Trojan fans with a high scoring offense coupled with a stingy defense. The highlight of the season materialized with a come-from-behind 30-27 win over Homecoming foe Ballard County, KY, on Oct. 3. The keys to the success of the team were attributed to sound fundamentals, outstanding speed, teamwork, and excellent leadership by the three Trojan Captains, Clay Word, Eddie fleck, and Mike Monkman. Based upon the success of the 1980 Trojans, football fans look forward to the 1981 season when the Trojans take on a new look as the red, white, and blue Massac County Patriots. 1980-81 Varsity Basketball L to R: Coach Mike Cougill, John Gentry, Barry Krueger, Lorenzo Goodman, Cameron Riley, Brent Logeman, Jeff Holland, John Stewart. In the 49 years from 1933-1981 Trojan basketball teams compiled a record of 879 wins against 440 losses for a winning percentage of .666. The two highlights of the 1980-81 season materialized in the Harrisburg Round Robin tournament and the Regional tournament. After being upset in the opening game of the Harrisburg tournament, the Trojans fought back to win the tournament by defeating the favorite McLeansboro Foxes. Trojan players Brent Logeman, Cameron Riley and Barry Kruger were all named to the all-tournament team. In winning the Regional tournament, the Trojans were able to avenge one of their losses. Early in the season cross-country rival Joppa had defeated the Trojans in an overtime game. In the Regional finals the Trojans turned the tables on the Rangers to take the championship. Throughout nearly five decades members of the community have witnessed an infinite number of basketball thrills. The Illohmet extends its recognition to the Trojan basketball program at Metropolis High School. 106 Lady Trojan Basketball First Row, L to R: Carol Burton, Nicole Ainsworth, Sharia Giltner, Laura Lang, Jana Swinford. Lady Trojans Gain Sectional Finals The 1980-81 Lady Trojans and Coach Cindy Allmendinger completed an excellent basketball season winning nearly all of their games and advancing to the final game of the Sectional Tournament at Cobden. At the Sectional the Lady Trojans lost a heartbreaker to Eldorado. On the regular season the Lady Trojans won twenty games while losing only four. Leading players for the Lady Trojans included Sheree Gilbert, who scored 311 points on the season. She was followed by Kim Oliver, with 297 points, and Joycelyn Bradford, with 276 points. In rebounds, Joycelyn Bradford led the Lady Trojans with 235 rebounds for the entire season, followed by Carol Bremer with 128. The MHS student body is proud of the Lady Trojans and the job they have done over the past two years. With key players returning for the 1981-82 season prospects for another tremendous year are good. 107 Front Row: Steve Bartlett. Mike Ramsey. Greg Miller. Danny Daunis. Clubs are created to bring people together and establish new friendships. Clubs serve the personal needs of their members and help these members to grow physically and mentally into more mature and responsible people. Also, if a person in a club has some personal problem too big or complicated to solve by himself, other members in the club may come to the person’s aid and, if possible, help that person overcome the problem. In this way, clubs usually can and do play an important role in a person s life. Serving the personal needs of its members is not the only function of a club. Another main function is to bring club members’ creative efforts together, organize these efforts, and do something in the community (and for the community) that can only be accomplished by such groups of people working together. The clubs and their activities in the community usually make or break,” or at least have a profound effect upon, that community. As a result, it can be said that clubs play an integral part in the lives of both members and non-members. The importance of school clubs should never be underestimated. 119 1980-81 MHS Marching Trojan Band The Metropolis High School Marching Band, under the direction of Ed Adami, completed its final year with the fulfillment of a dream. The Band, which was nominated by the Illinois Music Educators’ Association, attended the Mexican Band Festival in Mexico City, Mexico, April 16 through April 20. In addition to marching, the Band sold popcorn and fruit, held two raffles, two chili suppers, and a chicken dinner to help finance the trip to Mexico. The trip was but a highlight of many other activities of the Band in its busiest year in MHS history. The Band attended field shows and parades in such places as Salem, West Frankfort, Murphysboro, and Mayfield, Kentucky.
