The Seniors of the Varsity football squad were candidates for the crowning. They were Frank Forthman, Dwight Foss, Mike Rushing, Bruce Horman, Jeff Hargan and the new Egg Bowl Queen, Queen Jim Casey. The candidates were assisted by the Varsity Cheerleading squad. The activity was greatly enjoyed by students and faculty. Frank Sommer. Lori Lynn, Harlen Parrish Homecoming Week Contest Winners and Friends Cathy Bradford Jason Goodman Homecoming 1979 proved to be an exciting and successful event. The annual festival was arranged to last all week with a wide variety of contests and fun activities. The highlight of the week occurred on Sept. 24 when Nancy Spruell was crowned 1979-80 Homecoming Queen. After the Coronation, students participated in a snake-dance from the Massac County Courthouse to the football field, followed by a bonfire. The entire Homecoming week, September 24-28, was definitely enjoyed by all. Students and faculty alike look forward to this fall’s Homecoming festivities. Homecoming Week Nineteen Seventy Nine Mistletoe Ball 1979 74 On December 22, the annual Mistletoe Ball was held, bringing the true Christmas spirit to the MHS Gym. The Art Club again sponsored the dance, which featured the theme Christmas in the Park. A flowing fountain, donated by Lauderdale Florist, had paths leading from both sides to a pavilion in the center of the gym. An old fashioned bandstand was placed in the far corner of the gym where the rock band MARZ played a great assortment of music. Couples had their pictures taken in a large sled, placed in the hall and decorated with garlands of glitter and greenery. Everyone enjoyed the wintery decorations, and altogether the Christmas Dance was a success. 75 Seniors During the month of November, 1979, the lllohmet staff polled MHS Seniors on a variety of subjects. Several unpredicted observations were made from the results obtained. One surprise developed in the Pick of the Flicks division where the movie “Halloween finished far out in front of Animal House and the rest of the top ten In Rock n Roll , the biggest shock was Kenny Rogers finishing in the list of favorites. Predictably, Styx was picked as the number one rock group with Bad Company and Journey a close second and third. Pick of the Flicks 1. Halloween 2. Animal House 3. Rocky II 4. Gone With The Wind 5. Cupid abounded in the MHS gym as the Student Council held the first annual Sweethearts Dance in celebration of Valentine's Day. Many couples danced the night away to the music provided by MHS disc jockey Danny Stitt, who provided music for the event The Valentine’s Dance replaced the traditional Spring Dance and based upon its success should become an annual tradition with MHS. Junior Senior Prom Is Held May 10 92 On Saturday, May 10, the MHS Junior Senior Prom Kicked off with the traditional Prom Banquet in the MHS gym. Following the meal welcome speeches were presented by Juniors Tracy Lillie and Ann Lester. Senior Class President Chad Lamb then gave a few words of thanks on behalf of the Senior Class. The program was brought to a close at 6:45 p.m. to allow Prom goers the opportunity to return home and prepare for the dance. By eight o'clock the same evening Tuxedo Junction was the place to be in Metropolis. Juniors and Seniors appeared decked out in an array of tuxedos and formals. Although the rock band booked for the event was forced to cancel due to mechanical difficulties, MHS students proved versatile by bringing their own albums which were played over the public address system. Students and faculty commented later that this year's Prom, which featured the theme Castle of Dreams,” was truly one of the most memorable in recent years. A thanks goes to J. D. Seitzinger and the MHS Juniors for their efforts in making this a successful Prom. li 93 94 Jr. Civitan Talent Show May 17 brought a breath of fresh air to the MHS Auditorium in the form of the Jr. Civitan Talent Show. The event, opened to all students and faculty members from Unit District One, featured entertainment ranging from ballet to gospel music to jazz dance. This year, awards were presented by Jr. Civitan Presidents Shannon Wells and Carolyn Smith to individual winners in two categories: Jana Bunch won the eighth grade and under division while MHS freshman Erika Washer took the ninth grade and above division. Audience response at the conclusion of the program indicated the crowd was well-pleased with the variety of talent displayed throughout the evening. 96 1979 Varsity Trojan Football L to R. Once the season was under way, the offensive and defensive squads worked well as a unit, combining a powerful ground attack with a steady defense. The Trojans won four of their last five contests, starting with a 20-10 victory over Eldorado on Oct. 6. The Trojans then came home to beat McLeansboro, 14-12, on Oct. 12, while the highlight of the season took place on Oct. 19 with a 54-0 trouncing of the Cairo Pilots. The Trojans ended the year on Nov. 2 at home with a 14-13 victory over Sparta. 101 Trojan Cross Country Left to Right: Greg Reynolds. Gary Bremer. Keith Hendricks. After easily winning the Regional Tournament the Lady Trojans rolled on to a first place finish in the Sectional Tournament before losing by one point to Benton in the Super Sectional. Because of their winning efforts and good sportsmanship, the Lady Trojans instilled a much deserved school spirit in regards to girls’ athletics. The entire MHS student body is proud that Coach Almendinger and the Lady Trojans represented our school so admirably, both in victory and in defeat. 106 L to R.
