Text from Pages 1 - 212 of the 1979 volume:

This Dream of Ours These are the young years, the treasured years when time means only the day after tomorrow. These are the years of wistful eyed beings with tender dreams. But youth is brutal as well as tender; youth is reality as well as a dream. A flower blooms and fades away — and blooms again, according to the season. And in like manner youth and dreams exist from spring to spring, for to everything there is a reason. The annual Homecoming festivities were centered around the theme Saturday Matinee”. The decorative class floats, bands, cars, and cheerleaders as well as the Homecoming candidates made up the parade. The crowd came from the exciting victory over Cairo to the formal atmosphere where the 1978 Homecoming Queen Teresa Lillie was crowned. A long day of activities came to a close with Burgundy playing for the annual dance. 68 69 Lisa Shmikler Teresa Lillie Melissa Holzer 1978 Homecoming Queen Candidates Sue Bremer Susan Oliver Glenda Farmer Attendants: Freshman: Sheila Hi lie brand Kathye Koch Sophomore: Tracy Lillie Cathy Shelton Juniors: Nancy Spruell Janet Strubinger Queen Teresa and Her Court Queen Candidates: Sue Bremer Glenda Farmer Melissa Holzer Teresa Lillie Susan Oliver Lisa Shmihler Faculty Follies ’79 George F. Sullivan auditorium came alive on Feb. 17 when the Jr. Civitan and the Massac County Teachers Association presented the second annual Faculty Follies. The entertainment for the evening included such acts as singing, dancing, clowning, acrobatics, skits, and instrumentals. The show's huge success and the complete participation by the teachers makes the annual event something we will all remember. 77 73 A Winter Wonderland On December 22, the M.H.S. gym came alive with Christmas spirit as the Mistletoe Ball, sponsored by the M.H.S. Art Club, began. The interior of the gym was decorated to develop the theme of A Winter Wonderland”. Snowflakes and silver stars suspended from the ceiling helped create a romantic illusion. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the sounds of Moondancer”. All in all, everyone enjoyed this year’s celebration of Christmas. 75 One of the highlights of the MHS school year occurred on Wednesday, March 21, when the Illohmet staff declared Hat and T-shirt Day” at Metropolis High. On that day students and faculty came to school wearing their favorite T-shirts and head gear. As can be seen in the pictures on these pages, there were many colorful and humorous designs especially created for the occasion. Because of this project, the yearbook staff is actively planning the event for a repeat performance this year. FEATU't t MllCGET Hat and T-Shirt ” 76 77 Senior Class Celebration On March 15, nearly ihc entire Senior Class met at Fort Massac for the traditional picture taking of the class. The turnout was the largest ever as students came prepared to celebrate” before the cameras in a multitude of poses and antics. The warm weather and bright sunshine of the afternoon contributed greatly to the festive atmosphere and provided the memories included in this section. Following the hour long celebration it is doubtful that the statue of George Rogers Clark or the many squirrels who inhabit the area of the Fort will ever be the same. We find time to interact with others. Specialized friendships are just as vital. in which we can talk and share on a one to one basis. This strengthens and helps us grow more independent. If the individuals who serve as the basis for the system are strong, then the end result will be lasting. 90 91 Spring Fling was held on April 6 in the Rose E. Cutting Gymnasium. Many MHS students enjoyed the sounds of the latest diseo craze as they shook their booties to the music of the Sound Spectrum. The highlight of the evening occurred at 10 p.m. with the featured Disco '79 dance contest. MHS Junior Kevin Bow man and his date, Rita McNamara, won first place in the contest. Also, two dance instructors from Shawnee College demonstrated popular routines of some of the latest disco trends. The MHS Student Council sponsored the annual event and everyone enjoyed this spring festivity. 92 Spring Fling 1979 93 Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet On Friday, May 4V the MHS Junior class sponsored the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The evening began at 6 p.m. in the gym with the Prom Banquet. At the Banquet, Juniors Julie Sumner and Robin Sutties made after dinner speeches welcoming all students, faculty, and Board members. David Blackwell, speaking on behalf of the Senior class, delivered the customary thank you speech before the Banquet was brought to a close at 7 p.m. The dance started at 8 p.m. at Tuxedo Junction with music provided by the rock band Moon Dancer from Cape Girardeau. This year's Prom Theme Always and Forever” helped in creating a Prom that won’t be forgotten. At the conclusion of the dance at midnight, movies were shown in the MHS auditorium. The movies featured Smokie and the Bandit, Tales From the Crypt,” The Ghost of Mr. Chicken,” and a Bugs Bunny cartoon. This year's Prom was a great success, thanks to the Junior class and their advisor, J. D. Seitzinger. 94 A Special Friend. . . Tony Lillie 1960-1978 High in the heavens is heard the song We’re loyal to ou M.H.S.” and high among the lists of those who achieved success are found the names of M.H.S. leaders — Tony Lillie is one at the top. In every field of activity the past four years our school was represented by outstanding accomplishments of this exceptional person. Since the first day Tony Lillie entered the doors of Metropolis High School he attained heights which have made him a source of inspiration and a pride to those who followed him in the filled halls of M.H.S. He was involved in many school activities: M.H.S. Marching Band and Stage Band, school plays, Thespian Club, Honor Society, enjoyed all sports. President of his Freshman. Junior, and Senior Class, voted Most Talented” senior boy, and rightly so. After Tony's graduation in June, his presence was still felt at M.H.S. Tony was liked by everyone. He could pass you anywhere and brighten up the drabbest day. Tony never failed to be friendly and never failed to lend a helping hand when needed. He loved his school and respected its rules. He was considerate and understanding. He was quiet about his achievements. He set a shining example of what an American teenager should be. Because of Tony, we feel we won a wealth that far exceeds all earthly things. He will remain great in our memory, a wonderful possession, a FRIEND. 1978-79 Varsity Basketball Trojans Front row: Eddie Beck, Chuck Leek, Joey Dunning. Barry Kruger. We had visions of making this the best year ever. And while some of us did not return we were joined by new faces. But now the year is coming to a close. W'hat we set out to do may not have been accomplished, but it was still a good year. We met new friends, had new experiences and conjured up new dreams and visions. Though some will be glad to say good-bye, others will sigh in regret. Although we will never go back and relive those days, we do have something no one could ever take away; the memories that we hold of our friends, teachers, victorious ballgames, and moonlight dances. It's time to look back now at all we have done and to start thinking about all the years to come. This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is rather the end of the beginning. 144 KIRKPATRICK MOTOR CO.
