I have fought a good fight, 1 have finished the race, 1 have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness ... fp Qe •i -... ....Si Gerald Wilke achieved victory. Always in competition, he set his goals high. His achievements were many; success was a key word in his life. Gerald excelled in countless ways. His ability for leadership seemed unbound-less. He leaves his challenge to each of us: to strive to make oneself better. Chosen cocaptain by his teammates in the 1972 football season, Gerald successively led the Trojans to victory. In track and field events, he excelled. And, when he was not on the football field or racing on the track, as president of the pep club, he spread spirit throughout the crowds. Gerald sacrificed himself for others; he coached younger students and athletes. Actively involved in his church, Gerald was a dedicated Christian. The dictionary is filled with countless words to describe him, but it is not needed. Instead, he has left behind his many acts of generosity and Christian love. Academically, Gerald's competitive spirit reached and soared. Because of his achievement, he qualified to be a member of the National Honor Society. He was chosen an Illinois State Scholar and Southern Illinois University named him a President’s Scholar. He was selected to be included in Who's Who in American High Schools. Even now, Gerald's friends and fellow students cherish his memory. They chose to elect him Mr. M. C. H. S. His ideals and our memories of him will stand a living memorial for each of us who knew him.- (Dedication continued on page 120) 5 Superiniendenf and Principal Superintendent: C. O. Decker Basketball Award. At the annual All-Sports banquet for '72-73, eight awards were presented in seven areas. The athletes themselves spoke. For each sporting event, an athlete presented a short speech. This proved to be most lively and interesting. The oldest of the sports awards given is the L. W. Smith award for outstanding contributions to the football team. It dates back to 1949. This year's winner was Gerald Wilke. Gerald was selected for this honor last November before his death in April. Tommy Quint accepted the award in his place. A new award was given. This award, named for the late Joe Korte, is to honor the outstanding golfer of the year. It went to Keith Moorman. In basketball, three awards were given. The rebounding award went to sophomore Newman Goodman. Bruce Hahn won the Dutch Schneeman free throw award. Jerry Gentry received the V. O. Decker award for the outstanding leader in basketball. This year, the baseball team voted not one, but two seniors as outstanding baseball player. Co-winners are Dwight Atkison and John Kreuter. Another new award is the Gerald Wilke outstanding track award. Recordholder in the 100 and the 220 , Dwayne Wall received this award. Varsity Cheerleaders (Dedication continued from Page 5) GLENDA LEIGH FORT and RUSSELL DANIEL MILLS God picked Glenda Leigh Fort and Russell Daniel Mills, Jr. , so that others might live. God really does pick his most beautiful flowers! Doesn't He? Sunday evening, May 20, Rusty Mills and Glenda Fort were killed in an automobile accident. Due to tlie late date less than two weeks before school was out, the dedication has been continued here in the last pages of the sports section. On May 20, 1973, the Great God Almighty watched very carefully over the members of M.C. H. S. , and He said, The time has come for me to go into my garden and pick my most beautiful flowers. Glenda Leigh Fort and Russell Daniel Mills, Jr. , were - and still are - two of God's most beautiful flowers. Glenda was a Jr. Varsity cheerleader and also a member of the Pep Club. Glenda, in her lifetime, did not care much for material things. She was more concerned with her family and other loved ones. If someone had a problem of any sort, Glenda, when called upon, was always willing to help. Inside and outside the classroom, Glenda always had a cheerful smile. She was a very happy person. She laughed and helped others to laugh also. You could always hear the sound of her voice (especially at the ballgames). Rusty tried to live every moment of his life to the fullest. He played hard in competitive sports, he worked diligently at a part-time job, he was actively involved in building homecoming floats and other school projects, and he made friends easily. He was always Rusty, never pretending, nor wanting to be someone else. For that, we all liked him. Dear Lord If I should win; Let it be by the code. With my faith and honor held high. But if I should lose, Let me Stand by the road, and wave As the winner goes by. Amen 120 THE YEAR or ’73 The year of '73 brought both good and tragedy. The good was seeing number 43 tackle someone, but no more tackles will we see because number 43, was GERALD WILKE. When playing baseball a runner would slide into home, and then a voice would shout, ”Yer Out! Afterwards, the catcher would pick up his glove, that was dirty and dusty, but there won’t be any more games for the glove that was dusty, because it belonged to a man named RUSTY. Also, when at a basketball game you could hear people shout, and then a girl would flip, twirl, and jump about, bift you will never see another girl like the one I knew whose name was GLENDA LEIGH. And now you see what I am trying to say -GERALD, RUSTY, AND GLENDA have all passed away. Of all the things that I pray, In our minds their memories will always stay. All these things we could not see, happened In the year of '73.
