THE 1970 ILLOHMET VOLUME 41 Metropolis Community High School Metropolis, Illinois Foreword The faces of Metropolis Community High School are many and varied, but they reflect you, the student body. Yesterday a happy face, today a sad one, tomorrow a teariul but eager face meets the world with anticipation. This yearbook has attempted to portray in pictures and words - your lives as you have lived them during this school year. If you as a student, when looking at the 1970 Illohmet, can place yourself in a scene or can enjoy an accomplishment, the yearbook has then succeeded. We hope that you feel that the forty-first Illohmet has succeeded in portraying the 1969-70 school year in a very meaningful way for you. 1970 Ulohmet Dedicated The yearbook staff takes pride in dedicating the 1970 Illohmet to a member of the faculty whom we all know and admire, Mr. Kenneth Halstenberg. His persistent effort and modesty have gone too long without praise. Mr. Halstenberg, as you know, is an excellent Biology teacher. He has faithfully been the sponsor of the Student Council for many years, and also works in attendance. Fairness and motivation are the two chief products in the atmosphere of his teaching. To sum it up, Mr. Halstenberg is a gentleman. Mr. Halstenberg accepts with disbelief the honor of being the dedicatee of the yearbook. 4 Not only is Mr. Halstenberg a noted teacher but he also devotes much of his time in the work of the attendance office. to Kenneth Halstenberg Mr. Halstenberg takes a relaxed position to explain a difficult facet of Biology. There are many wonders in the field of Biology, here Mr. Halstenberg explains one of them. Mr. Halstenberg explains the habitats of the reptile while students listen attentively. 5 School Life Dave Beck and Dave Hearn plan the easiest and best way to paint the backdrop for the Jr.-Sr. Prom. 6 Lanny Grace and Lloyd Steincamp initiate freshman, Steve Jones, to school life. Bonnie Wedeking tediously counts nickles from money received for cafeteria tickets. Jimmy Sawyers actively participates in a baseball game during Physical Education class. Debbie Medley, Patsy Foreman, and Brian Anglin pause between classes for instant relief at the water fountain. 8 Students casually stroll home after a strenuous day at school. Jimmy Cowsert waits impatiently for Miss Munal to sign his pass to get out of study hall! Suzanne Elam and Terry Carroll prepare their trays for one of MCHS's noted lunches. Noon time leisure is enjoyed by students on the front steps. Homecoming Parade Paves the Way The 1970 Homecoming celebration began with the traditional bonfire followed by a snake dance. During the week students were earnestly at work on the many floats depicting the theme Comic Strips. The homecoming festivities were started by a half-hour pep rally in the gym. This was followed by a well planned homecoming parade sponsored by the Key Club. The homecoming game and the half-time show exemplified good organization and high Trojan spirits. Following the exciting 36-8 victory for the Trojan football team came the homecoming dance and the suspenseful waiting for the coronation of the 1970 homecoming queen. I. U. 's High School Band Day, and the Deer Festival parade at Golconda. Late November brought a quiet period during which serious work was begun on the Christmas concert which was presented on December 16. December also brought with it the many activities associated with the production of the Mistletoe Ball which was sponsored this year by the band members themselves Mrs. Holley strikes up her famous pose as she gets ready to direct the band. Basketball games and fund-raising projects kept the band busy throughout the winter, and the spring was highlighted by a student solo and ensemble recital, State Contest at Sparta on April 18 and the Spring Concert on May 24. Since all work and no play makes anything dull, the band members were given the opportunity to go to Carbondale on two occasions to see musical comedies performed by professional companies. Need we say that POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCES, which was played on June 1, was a welcome tune? Jimmy Childers helps the band to make the ice cream social a successful event. 65 HEAD MAJORETTE - Debbe Reineking 66 ASSISTANT MAJORETTES - STANDING: Jane Severns, Jilla Fiorentini.
