THE 1969 ILLOHMET Volume 40 Metropolis Community High School Metropolis, Illinois , Only once in a great while does one find a truly outstanding school with an equally outstanding teacher. Metropolis Community High School is such a school and Mrs. Elizabeth Beardsley is such a teacher. For the past seventeen years Mrs. Beardsley has been giving unceasingly of her energies for the education of the students of Metropolis Community High School. She has been instrumental in the introduction and explanation of several new mathematical concepts, and her constant efforts to help each and every student have given her great distinction. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and her Master of Science of Education from Southern Illinois University. She teaches Math 1VB, Algebra UB, Geometry, sponsors Mu Alpha Theta and is involved day and night in helping people learn, which makes her more than a teacher in the eyes of all who know her. We see in Elizabeth Beardsley what we would all like to be ... successfully devoted to a life’s work. Therefore, because of her devotion and constant guidance, we, the lllohmet Staff of 1969, dedicate our yearbook to a most worthy teacher, Elizabeth Beardsley. V rs Elizabeth Beardsley Honored With '69 lllohmet Dedie at ion Mrs. Beardsley's first reaction of the yearbook dedication -shocked disbelief and humble appreciation. Now what if we approach it this way? One of Mrs. Beardsley’s virtues is her thorough explanations of complicated problems. Right: Mrs. Beardsley works during noon Mu Alpha Theta meeting to produce interesting material for math students. Foreword What a yearbook should be and what a yearbook turns out to be are not always the same. We, the Illohmet Staff of 1969, have tried to present in these pages the essence of MCHS as we were able to see it. It is impossible to recapture the minute details, the inevitable slang, the dialogue which more than makes each situation. Also it is impossible to include every student in each activity. However, we sincerely hope that you will consider the Illohmet worth our time and your cooperation, and find it a book to treasure throughout the years to come, being able to look back and see that “you were a part of all you met.” School Life Mr. Seitzinger instructs his students in the use of microscope. Students take time out to refresh themselves at the lobby coke machine. 6 The sophomore class shows the usual enthusiasm at a pep session. Tom Hall thunders through the line while an opponent tries desperately to tackle him. Shown here is one of the many well arranged lockers at MCHS. Tommy Ragain swings his partner, Debbie Wells, round and round at a FHA-FFA banquet. Kenny Herring surveys articles used in the Junior-Senior Prom. Debbie Donaldson puts enthusiasm in the hearts of MCHS backers at a basketball game. As the snow comes down, bus students go into the school building for comfort and warmth. Climbing the stairs at MCHS is a pleasure more than a chore, since it involves meeting and talking with friends. 9 Bonfire, Parade, KRIS KENNEDY - 1969 Homecoming Queen The traditional bonfire kindled the spirit for festivities that followed during the 1969 Homecoming celebration. Homecoming day brought the annual parade of bands, floats and gaily decorated cars. The winning floats were: 1st place, Junior Class; 2nd place, Spanish Club and Honor Society; 3rd place, Sophomore Class. The highlights of the evening were the football game and the dance climaxed by the crowning of Kris Kennedy as Homecoming Queen, 1969. 12 and Coronation Make an Exciting Homecoming The Junior Class depicts the Trojans on the track to Victory. The Trojans and Wildcats end another play. Mark Alexander skillfully runs through a play as the Trojan team spurs on toward victory. 14 The MCHS pep band adds sparkling tones and lively highlights to the Homecoming game. Their music ranges from the jazzy beat of Herb Albert, to the ever-popular “Dixieland Blues’’ and the old familiar classic of football songs. Music director Jo Ann Holley and halftime announcer Johnny Fletcher patiently observe and direct the band’s presentation of Homecoming 1969. 15 FIRST ROW - Left to Right: Freshmen attendants. Ricky Grace discusses the Sweetheart dance with Jan Korte as she works on a bulletin board describing the dance. MCHS offered a variety of dances for the student this past year. A formal dance, the Mistletoe Ball, was sponsored by the band parents, and a mod dance was sponsored by the junior class. As a celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Student Council sponsored a Sweetheart dance. This dance was a first in the extracurricular activities of MCHS students. The “Epic of Sound” provided the entertainment for the dance, with the student council doing an outstanding job on decorations. The mothers of the student council members served refreshments during the breaks. The Sweetheart dance proved to be a successful event and hopefully will become an annual affair.
