i i Metropolis Community Ctiyli School METROPOLIS, ILLINOIS 1959 ILLOHMET Published bij $11 oh met Staff METROPOLIS COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL We, the Yearbook Staff, present for your approval the Illohmet, the annual publication of our school. Through picture form we have tried to present to you some of the many things with which our school and our nation are concerned. As history was made in the past so is it made today, with each individual making some contribution either directly or indirectly. The clubs that exist in our school add greatly to the influence upon the character of our students. They give to the boys and girls better training for a more ideal home life. They teach them to cooperate in all friendly relations. As a result of this formed habit of co-operation the graduates go onward through life, building as they go. —Editor (LxJilor -in- Chief. . . Senior (Propk ropnecu Doubtless the next twenty-five years will bring about many dramatic changes in our world. Learned men of seemingly great vision have attempted to foresee the condition and state of this brave new world”, and some of these prophecies” are already being fulfilled. We do not assume to be learned or discerning, but wc would now join ourselves to the prophetic ranks of Huxley and Orwell and attempt to foretell what the future holds for our ’59 graduates. If one were to visit our good earth in the year 1984, he would find that he was truly in The Golden Age of Peace.” F. B. I. Director, Jerry Holmes, had almost stamped out crime, and Jack Dunning and Gary Angclly were the heads of a new international police force. An active army was still maintained under the direction of chiefs of staff Donnie Lindsey, Delmar Rottman, and Donald Fix. However, the primary interest of the military was in space exploration. Bryant Riley and Norman Koerner had already made several probes into space which revealed many startling facts about our universe. Carolyn Cromeenes was the army’s chief rcckct designer, and Marilyn Green was doing research on the affects of space travel on diet. c Jports were still the national pastime, with many achievements made and many records broken. John Steele had slammed sixty-ftve homcruns, and Jim Holt had become the first pitcher in modern baseball to win fifty games in a season. Ron Parr had coached the Fighting Iilini” to their tenth consecutive conference win in football, and John Riles had just published an important book. How to Win at Tiddly Winks. Dan Evers, William Lott, Dave Wehmeycr, and John Swank had all been elected to the Hall of Fame, and Pat Park became the first woman to win The Masters’ ” and the P. G. A.” However, all these were dwarfed by the greatest athletic achievement of the year and, perhaps, of any year: Bill Parrish was immortalized as Athlete of the Century.” Since 1959 education had progressed in leaps and bounds, and by 1984 almost everyone had attended a college or university. Danny Comer was president of Harvard, David Beane was chancellor of the University of Chicago, and Hazel Harris had been appointed dean of Radcliffe College. Faye Scott held the chair of Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins and William Harrison was lecturing at Oxford on the socio-psychological aspects of the effects of the rain forest climate on the South Pacific cultures. Ruth Borcm and Betty Evans were conducting research on para-psychology at Duke University, and Lynda Kirgan, of Brookhaven Institute, was attempting to create life on the Mojave Desert. Jim Smith of Yale had successfully proved the Pythagoran Theoreom was erroneous and had proposed Smith’s Axiom: 14-2=4. Also a serious controversy had risen over the appointment of Sue Call to the position of Professor of Physical Education at Princeton University. Jo Ann Leek had won the Nobel Prize in biology for her cure for the common cold, and Linda May was presented the Pulitzer prize in literature for her tragic novel of war, The Last Man Home. Several other important books were published: Paul Harrison’s Crime Does Pay, Pat Stitcs’ The Art of Mixing, and Vivian Elam’s controversial story of a dissipated European intellectual, Leora. Several graduates found their way into the media of mass communications. Barbara Davis and Jean Elam were movie starlets. Susan Halcom, Susan Merrow, and Carol Kibler worked in a New York television studio, and Gary Gourley had become an internationally known news commentator. Yvonne and Satyra Williams designed costumes for Broadway musicals and Jim Wynne had become president of CBS. He was in the process of waging a serious network battle with his competitors, Vincent Powell of NBC and Derrell Grace of ABC. Norma Coursey, Laura Jeffords, and Bonnie Metcalf had television shows of their own, and James Anderson had won an Oscar for his spectacular motion picture production, The Saga of the Texan.” In 1984 the arts were enjoying a heyday, and some of our graduates had become successful musicians. Mike Tanner had become an opera star, and Paul Sommer had been appointed conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Melvin Williams was leading his own jazz combo in San Francisco. Bob Swenson was on European tour with his band, featuring the arrangements and lead trombone of Bill Spencer, and Pat Moller was the new head of the reed department at the Eastman School of Music. Rock and Roll” singer, David White, had already sold twenty million records. Some of our graduates had become Madison Avenue executives. The construction corporation of Faughn, Berry, Herring and Buchanan was now the largest in the world. Also the baby-sitting firm of Shelton, Schaffer, Slankard and Stevens was operating on a nation-wide basis. The major advertising firm of Mann, Mumford, Fiorcntini and Dassing handled accounts for many big businesses. In the fashion world Aleta Davidson and Patsy Obermark were designing Paris fashions modeled by Anne Rhodes, Janice Hill, Helen McGhee, Connie Barnes, and Kathy Whitelock. Cregg Oliver, president of General Motors, had murdered his secretary, Pamela Barfield out of nervous frustration. Phyllis Johnson and Linda Cook were the co-heads of the International World-wide Press, and Frank Williams had recently been named the new president of the A. F. L.-C. I. O. Marilyne Miller, Charlotte Mathis, Pat Bollone, Mary Margaret Harrison, and Peggy Williams were reputed to be the five richest women in America, and Marilyn Mittendorf, Carol King, Betty Kommcr, Ida Ann Hammock, and Kaye Scott all married millionaires. Sheila Harrison, Mary Neal Reynolds, Georgia Malin, Margaret Buchanan, and Myrna Mott were all happily married. June Bailey, Linda Holder, Betty Kickasola, and Judy Medley had been murdered by their husbands, but Martha Turner and Marjorie Childers took the initiative and were now serving life sentences. Howard Medley had been elected president of the National Council of Churches, and Russia had been converted from atheism chiefly through the efforts of Rev. Gary Schwegman. Such was the world in 1984 as foretold by its reformer, Guy Oakes, Loyalty We're loyal to you, M. H. S. We’re red and white, M. H. S. We’ll back you to stand ’Gainst the best in the land For we know you have sand, M. H. S. Rah! Rah! So crack out that ball, M. H. S. We’re backing you all, M. H. S. I believe that to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as challenging; for 1 know the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, 1 can not deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as 1 can secure, and in the ability of organized farmers to serve our own and the public interest in marketing the product of our toil. I believe we can safeguard those rights against practices and policies that are unfair. I believe in less depcndancc on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so—for others as well as myself; [ in less need of charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. I believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions in our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task. Several years experience in handling Green Mark and Orient Coal, has clearly proven to us that the public trend toward branded merchandise and the growing consumer preference for trade marked products most surely applies to coal. Since starting to sell trade marked coals not only have we opened the most new accounts, our old customers have expressed their pleasure in having trade marked coal now available to them. It comes from the leading coal mines of Franklin County, in Southern Illinois. It is washed, dried, dust-treated and precision sized., generous in heat units, low in ash. It performs efficiently and economically in all hand or stoker fired equipment. We invite you to join our growing list of Marine Fuel Oil customers. Here’s why our standard brand Marine Fuel Oil gives you dependable nonstop heat all through the winter months. For instance, all fuel oil when it comes from the refinery is perfectly clear, but in handling it absorbs oxygen rapidly with a formation of sludge. This causes trouble by plugging up burners and oil supply lines. Our fuel-tron is the answer to your trouble. You get this complete fuel oil additive in our Marine Oil at no extra cost. Keeps burners cleaner, prevents tank rusting, provides real modern fuel oil heat, with proven satisfaction to all users. Order now. Enjoy this dependable, low cost heat.
