Ellerbusch, Mr. Rcnaud THE CREED I believe in the future of farming with a faith born not of words but of deeds— achievements won by the present and past generations of farmers; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggle of former years. I believe that to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, 1 can not deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of organized farmers to serve our own and the public interest in marketing the product of our toil. I believe we can safeguard those rights against practices and policies that arc unfair. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so—for others as well as myself; in less need of charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. 1 believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions in our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task. —+ This Page Sponsored By HBo%mann LlmpizmEU Top Row: 1. Senior Prook ropnecu 1972. In this day when realistic writings reign over all other phases of the literary field, it would be a major catastrophe and a blow to a town’s pride to fail to be recognized in some form of writing. But yet, the city of Metropolis—population 65,000—seemingly possessing the essential ingredients of sordidness, corruptness, perverseness, and depravity necessary for rich, healthful, enjoyable reading, had failed to be placed into writing between the covers of a lid-lifting, best-selling realistic novel or in article form in a soiled, overly-read Confidential” magazine. And so it was that the editors of Grudge” magazine sent me, John Humma, staff writer and former home town boy, to the city of Metropolis’ write an article based on the lives of those in the graduating class of 1958 of M. C. H. S., from that time to date. In it was to be included their dreams, hopes and desires; their achievements and successes; their problems and decisions; and any little thing that might be eagerly lapped up by our greedy readers. -Immediately 1 delved into the matter. Upon rriy arrival in Metro Place” I hired Curt Rehlmeycr and Linda McDaniel of the Rehlmeycr McDaniel Private-Eye Firm to dig up information. They and their assistants, among whom were Ronnie Babb, Larry O’Brien, and David Hillebrand brought forth their spades and began their work, and very shortly the information came pouring in. It seems that Metropolis had grown tremendously, and with it, its citizens. Its mayor was the honorable (ornery) Mike Rice. Presently, he and several members of the City Council, Larry Lundsford, Le-land Elting, Allen Stcpter, and Lavernc Kruger, were engaged with the problem of how to stop the constant litter of cans on the city streets. Since the establishment of the Unionvillc Canning Corporation was founded by President Larry Dunn, it had become a dilemma as to what to do with the exhausted cans. Chief of Police Ron Owens, and his police women, Mary Lou Whitelock and Pat Lewis, were hot on the trail of the leaders of the Syndicate, which specialized in car stealing, concentrating exclusively on Cadillacs and Lincolns. Deputized were: Frederick Stratemeyer, Donald Ducky” Carroll and James Foss. Many of the ’5 8 Grads had remained in the same line of work they did in their off hours of their high school days. Marsala Havcrkamp had her own soda fountain, a magnificent affair lined with silver dollars. Working with Marsala were Yvonne Dip” Bormann, Peggy Flip” Henderson, and Deann Jip” Hogue, the cashier. Boopic” Holzcr had owned her own theatre but had retired. Running the theatre was Eddie Clark. Norma Jean Hittcrman operated the Hittcrman Hardware Store specializing in ideal axes for tough beards.” Demonstrating these niutilatcrs—er-ah-razors—were such grizzlies as Neil Henderson and Joe Duckworth. Bonnie Barnett was now a car dealer selling the newest car on the market, the sensational new Sludge!” Ace car salesmen were Loose” Bruce Arensman and Diamond” John Powers . . . Jack Burnett and Jerry Parker owned the We Scll-em, You Wrcck-cm” used car lot. Adjacent to their business Merle Pausing had his You Wreck-cm, We Fix-em” body shop. Some had followed their desires. Steven Whcelock was the skipper of the U. S. S. Chill of the Arctic Fleet. The First Mate was Meredith Moose” Moss. Mopswinger was Leonard Trampe. David Miller edited the daily Metropolis Muck. Among the staff members were: fashion writers Vernon Reynolds and Truman Owens, sports writers Dale Scoop” Bremer and Bruce Flush” Decker, editorialists Marshall Burkhead, whose column was headed It Shouldn’t Be That Way,” and Catherine Arensman with her It’s a Woman’s World” column. Typists for Dave’s newspaper were Patricia Flying Fingers” Penrod, Barbara Dancing Hands” Johnston, and Peggy Stuck” Stevens. An affiliate of the Muck was the Daily Racing Form” edited by Jerry Sharpie” Lamb. Sue Nutty, Bonnie Wedeking, Margie Hunerkoch, Frances Struve, and Evelyn Duncan were all secretaries for large business firms . . . Nora Arensman was an executive with Hinkle, Finkle and Dinkle Fur Company . . . and Elaine Jordan operated a bird farm. (Geodets, I believe.) Some simply changed their names which is a customary thing for a woman to do when she marries. A few of the squares were Evelyn Bean, Jo Ann Bremer, Carole Eickholz, Lillian Finney, Wave Holt, Roberta Hunt, Minnie Whitesides, Linda Tanner, June Rhodes, and Ruth Ramcr. One continued living a happily married life—Esther Shannon. And there were several who suffered the twists of fate which arc a part of life. Ronnie Wallace endured a shortage of hair for a brief period after a tornado had formulated on his head. He was puzzled why people mistook him for some guy named Oliver” during this time . . . Gene Tanner’s $64,000 which he had won on a certain TV quiz show figuratively went down the drain” when a gust of wind chucked the check from his hand as he was on his way to the bank to deposit it and carried it down an empty man-hole—any sewer-mongers around? There was one who answered the call of journalism. Jack Borum’s So You Wanted to be a Basketball Manager” became a best-seller overnight . . . Some became Florence Nightingales (nurses). Among them were Carol Hinners, Shirley Brown, Doris Dee Henderson, Sally Burnham, and Patsy Rhccling. Those who left the hospitals were many! Archie English used to be” a hell-driver. Science took a few. Gary Jones, John Owen, and Gerald Elcam were now universally known. In this universe and others too, Ralph Webb also was a space traveler—accidentally. He was the result of a slight” mishap in the chemistry lab at which he was employed. He was last seen over California as he was revolving in his orbit . . . Judy Laird was the Empress of Pluto . . . John Copley and Jerry Leek were co-pilots on the new DC-7468972 5081 jet passenger plane. Hostesses were Charlotte Bo-gard and Mary Clutts. Lloyd Bremer and Kenneth Koncmann were enjoying the dividends of their latest farm implement invention. A wheat reaping machine that could reap a four acre field in five minutes. How about that? There were many who became head-liners in the world of show business. Diane Kortc, discovered at a modeling exhibition, became a movie star overnight . . . Jim Lynx” Modglin expertly handled her business affairs as her agent . . . Susan Easterday had her own TV show for network OPU entitled All About Jerry. Betty Chick, Betty Bremer, Linda Kay Hausman, and Phyllis Schriefer were front office accountants for OPU. Two former undertakers, Jack Wemhocncr and Danny Goins, commenced their show, This Was Your Life.” Barbara and Beverly McGill had a show The Twins Can't Win” on OPU’s rival network, ZYX . . . Sandra Lcmlcy and David Henderson formed the wonder- ful dance combo, The Torrid Trippers,” and Larry Crouse became an expert TV camera man on many of the new five-hour spectaculars.” A few of my former classmates entered the field of sports . . . Billy Christian starred as a breakaway halfback for the Mermet Mergansers and Robert Hillcbiand and Floyd Sullivan became champion wrestlers. And, of course, Sue Taylor and Charlene Downing became the first major league baseball cheerleaders . . . O. D. Hendrix and Larry Metcalf grew into famous names for their hunting exploits in the wilds of Africa. And last, but not least—to employ an over-used expression—some became benefactors to the future of America, instilling the powerful and essential requirements of education into the absorbent young mind that he may go into this world and fill the vacated position of an Einstein, a Benjamin Franklin, or a Leopold. (How did he get in this?) In other words, some became school teachers. Most of the old guard left about the time the new, majestic high school was built. A few retired, some moved on to fresh positions in different cities, and several occupied posts in the newly established College of Cruelty on the outskirts of Metropolis. At any rate the present M. C. H. S. principal, reigning in his throne of gold in the new diamond-studded office was Floyd Florstman. Under his command he had a staff of seven office secretaries upon whom he could rely to carry out the school functions excellently. They were Judy Brown, official pencil sharpener, and June Sutfin, Beverly Harris, and Norma Crockett, bookkeepers, stenographers, and anything else that came along. In the ranks of the preceptors were found Pat Hohman, band teacher, always equipped with a supply of cotton which she could hastily insert into her ears during her classes; Bobby Henley, who had returned to teach his old love, Spanish; Judy Green, boys’ P. E. instructor; Shirley Griffey, enlightening her pledges with the secrets of Modern Living; Janice Potterbaum, in the fine arts of speaking and writing. properly, English; Robert Chick, agriculture, or How to Plant Seeds and Plow a Field;” Barbara Nell Robertson, speech, or, How Not to Lisp or Stutter”; Lillian Giltner, Home Economics, teaching the arts of sewing and cooking; and Carol Haley, undertaking the hard task of inaugurating the new department of progressive school teaching which included many new talents as better marble shooting. Madclyn Faughn and Barbara Koncmann were leaders in the Parent Teachers’ Association. So, with an array of notes. Only a few short years ago hydrocooling was not known, but through research, it has opened up a huge market for ice. Ice is more important today than it was decades ago. Without it our whole standard of living would be substantially lower. Fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and many other perishable commodities are shipped the length of our land under ice refrigeration to markets. Today North Carolina is producing more than 2,000,000 broilers each month, it takes thousands of tons of ice to cool pack and ship this product. Until recently fresh peaches were never wet when shipped to the market. The trade did not think it could be done. For the past several years, Massac County has had a very large peach crop, and nearly all of these peaches were hydro-cooled and shipped to markets under ice refrigeration. In a few short years, the whole concept of handling peaches has changed. Hydrocooling has become a standard procedure, with the local Ice Company in this area having the opportunity of sharing in this business. Genuine ice is always available. Get it at our platform, it can be picked up in convenient wet strength sanitary paper bags. It can be stored in your freezer compartment, so that you’ll always have plenty on hand for all occasions. A bag of ice is certainly a vital, yes indispensible part of every picnic. Many of our friends ask us, to whom do you sell ice, with the above explanation you will readily see where this product goes. The ice business is one of America’s oldest industries. Since the first plant was built in 1868, ice has contributed much to the health, welfare, comfort and economic advancement of this great country of ours. GET A LOAD OF THIS. Two prominent trade marks that represent outstanding coals from the heart of Southern Illinois To be assured of the best performance from your heating plant, insist on Green Mark or Orient coal. It’s smoother—it’s slower burning, you get your maximum heat units from this solid value coal. Fire ball coal available, which is very popular for use in fireplaces. Marine fuel oil plus anti-rust protection at no extra cost, provides the intense heat instantly. I’m your Marine fuel oil dealer and I have a suggestion that will help us both. I’d like for you to order your fuel oil today. I can serve you better, and operate my business more efficiently, if you’ll place your order now, rather than waiting for the cold weather that swamps us with orders. I stay in business by satisfying you, and I can serve you better when I have time to do the job unhurriedly. Oil heat for prompt metered delivery. Dial 5211, your fuel oil distributing agent.
