Rodgers, Mr. Renaud THE CREED I believe in the future of farming with a faith born not of words but of deeds— achievements won by the present and past generations of farmers; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years. I believe that to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I can not deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and to think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of organized farmers to serve our own and the public interest in marketing the product of our toil. I believe we can safeguard those rights against practices and policies that are unfair. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so—for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. I believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions in our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task. — f I I i i i i i i | i I j i I i i i | | — j. I, Carol English, in my usually blank state of mind do hereby will the following: to Mike Rice, the fun of being a senior; to Sue Nutty, a lot of time to study on the bus without bothering her; to Norma Crockett and Nell Robertson, I leave my old typewriter and eraser (what’s left of it); to Leland Elting and Thomas Casper, the ability to find a nickname for someone else so they won’t get bored on the bus; to my brother, Archie, I advise to take advantage of all the good times in high school—the school days go too fast; to Nancy Rice and Judy Lindsey, my place on bus No. 10 as noise maker; to Sue Wiedeman and Barbara Smith, I leave all the good times in F.H.A, Last, but far from least, I leave to my cousin Linda Burnham the ability to collect all the boys she can in her next three years in school. Seems as though she is doing rather well. Now I leave MCHS with many fond memories. Thank you, staff, for everything. I, Jackie Talley, in my unusual state of mind, leave to Susan Wehrmeyer my pleasant memories of MCHS; to Janice Hill 1 leave my parking place in front of Cally’s; to Diane Korte, my choice spot in Rhetoric; to Sue Taylor, all of my books in the library; to “Boopie” Holzer, 1 leave all the meanness that I got into during the past four years; to Susan Halcom, I leave my P.E. locker which I didn’t use. To all my teachers, I leave the memory of me. May they enjoy it forever! In my be-fuzzled, be-witched, bothered, and bewildered state of mind ( ?) I, Barbara Yates, do hereby bequeath to the following: my grades which are not lower than 0 or higher than 50 go to Jack Wemhoener —maybe he can make up the rest of the 100; to some poor sucker, I leave all the lovely ( ?) bugs in the Biology room—may he enjoy (?) them more than I did; to Pat Rheeling, I leave all the show'ers in P.E. I never took, and also the fun of teasing Miss Anderson; my place in Chemistry goes to Bill Spencer—I hope he doesn’t have to struggle through it as I did!; I’ll leave my first book, Writing And Passing Kotes, to Susan Easter-day—she had better make good use of it; 1 leave my spot in Rhet to Carol Hinners—may she love it as much as I. My worldly sum of 10c goes to Susan Halcom and Janice Hill. Please spend it wisely girls— it took me four years of toil to save it!! All the chewing gum and scrap paper I have left I will give to Karen Kotter. My last package of dynamite goes to Preston Brewer as he will need it to blast his way out of school! I leave my second book, Fooling The Teachers, to Bonnie Barnett—she has a good start already! My most prized possession I shall leave to Sally Burnam, my chair in band. Now I say goodbye to all my friends and good ole M.C.H.S. With me I take four years of fun, laughter, and fond memories. To the teachers 1 just leave!!! I, Laura Eickholz, in my unbalanced mind, leave the following: to Boopie Holzer, all my nicknames and may she cherish them always; to Diane Korte, my ability to get back to school on time at noon; to Sue Taylor, my Hi-Tri office, it is such a bit part; to Doris Dee Henderson, my quiet ways; to Susan Halcom and Janice Hill, 1 leave my ability “not to get along” with all the boys at MCHS; to Susan Wehrmeyer, Mr. Gher —may she have as much fun in his classes as I did; to Martha Dever, I leave my ability to get along with her father; to Ronnie Owens, the dance floor over at Cally’s; to Duckie Carroll, all the books in the library and may he lead more than I did; to Jerry Wilkes and Larry Dew, my ability to get through school in four years and still have as much fun as 1 did. 1, Frances Price, hereby sober-minded will my eyelash curlers to Pat Lewis; my dance steps to Jane Shelton; my long hair to Diane Korte; my pretty clothes to Boopie Holzer; my laughing and talking in study hall to June Rhodes, and my ability to roam the streets to Ronnie Owens. When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people such as I, Laverne Giltner, to write a will—I can’t, but I would like to leave the following: to Larry Dunn, my spot in Miss Munal’s second hour Rhetoric that he may or rather will make better grades than I did; and to Carol King and Betty Kickasola my ability to always get to the library two hours straight and chew gum sometimes; to Dale Faughn, I will, all the girls at M.C.H.S.; and to the teachers, I say, “Thanks for putting me through in four years.” But for me I take all the fond and pleasant memories I’ve collected through four years at M.C.H.S. I, Nancy Tolen, in my usual state of mind do hereby will to the following: to Madelyn Faughn, the hope that she will enjoy her last year of school better than I have mine and to all the freshmen and incoming freshmen, a bit of advice, take part in all the school activities and don’t spend all your time studying. I, Ann Searles, in my somewhat mixed up state of mind do will to the following: to Jack Burnett I leave my quiet ways; lo Susan Easterday my height; to Yvonne Bormann, my love for horses but no spills; and to Curt Rehlmeyer I leave my ability to stay home from school at least once a wreek. I will to my freshman brother my ability of getting out of school in four years. To the forthcoming students, I wish all the luck in the world. My memories of M.C.H.S. I take with me. Senior Class Prophecy . . . Once upon a time to come, a group of high school seniors, soon to be graduated, were wondering if they would be successful in their life after graduation. A teacher who happened to hear their hopes and fears said, Observe the past—what has been, will be.” Heeding their teacher’s counsel, they determined to observe a graduating class one hundred years in the past. Using certain devices of the period, we too shall see what they saw. P irst we shall watch the past-students before graduation, just to see what they were like. Ah! There through the window, see them! Two arc studying, there’s one sleeping . . . many are just talking—they seem typical of any senior class, about like us except for that outlandish garb. What year is this, and the school? Let me see. Why, it’s Metropolis Community High in 1957! We’ve seen them in school, now let us again observe them, several years later. We’ll scan the town and see if we can find all the old grads of 1957. Hey! There’s one now—Larry Lassiter, ace turbo-car salesman and overdue-bill collector for Charles Oliver and Charles Harrison’s Metro-Auto, demonstrating a GRC turbine car to prosperous Ronnie Main. Look out! CRASH! Too late. It looks as if nobody is hurt. Let’s sec who it is. Judy Holmes! Coming to the scene of the accident is police officer Charles Tucker who does a competent job of getting the accident details. Hauling away the cars is the wrecker firm of Bill Metcalf and Jim Rick, whose motto is We’ll clean up your wreck, by heck.” In case you’d like to know, Judy hired the law firm of Giltncr, Giltner, Giltner, and Hun-erkoch—Don, Jerry, Laverne, and Gale—to defend her, and was acquitted by Judge George Whitesides when the jury, composed of Janet Hinners, Charles Mittendorf, John McDowell, Roma Rac Williams, Marvin Schwetman, and Dorothy Mittendorf decided that it wasn’t Judy’s fault. It was the License Bureau’s for allowing her to drive. Oh well, enough of that. Let’s go on now. Across the street is the world famous photographer, Jack Halcom, and several of his models, Laura Eickholz, Betty Jo Lewis, and Carol Kimbrell. Jack’s also an amateur rocket builder. Wonder why he’s all bandaged up like that? Now we come to the Clark Building, designed by architects Charles Mitchell and Ann Janet Searles and built by Bill Helm and Bob Schneeman, contractors. On the top floor (No. 13) arc the studios of X-LAX-TV, owned by Durwood Eleam and Waller Korte. In Studio 19 on the Alice Schaffer Show” sponsored by the Paper-Mate Company, Governor Charles Risinger, introduced by Mayor Philip Worthen, is about to make a speech. Wait, don’t go away, his speeches aren’t bad. He sings them. Next to X-LAX Psychiatrist George Alliston has his office. In the waiting room of Marjorie Davison, the receptionist, is Anne Evers, Empress of Southern Illinois, she says. There are several other doctors in the building also, Barbara Yates, M.D., Eva Frances Price, M.D., and Don Rodgers, D.D.S. Tom Pullen, demolition expert, is going into this office. They’ve a difficult extraction today, I presume. On the first floor several activities are going on. Raymus Cummins, famous crocodile and coon hunter is giving a lecture, and authoress Barbara Reed is autographing first editions of her great novel Tobacco Alley or Have a Chew, Granny, We Won’t Tell The Doctor.” Over there is the shop of horo-logists Jerry Porter and Lowell Logeman. VV7 L , VVe’rc through in the Clark Building so now we’ll meander down the street. Here’s Ye Olde Soda Fountain” owned, jointly, by Frances Meinders and Sylvia McCracken, who employ Claudia Lowry to create new soda drinks for soda jerkess Mary Jo Harrell to fabricate. Hey, there is Robert Hawk” Taylor, who hit sixty-five runs last year for Joppa in the American League, having a Double-over-and-under-Spitball-Special soda. Down on the corner is the office building of Massac Incorporated owned by Paul Adkins and Joe Bryant; coming out are secretaries Connie Carter, Carol English, Nancy Tolen, and Rosa Lee Slankard going for their mid-morning seltzer-water break. It’s rumored that Paul and Joe still have the first dollar they made, also the plates they made it with. just a hop, step, and a jump (for hop, step, and jumpers) down the street is the Jennings Building where Barbara Smith publishes the great newspaper El Mar.” With Barbara are her chief printers George Yates and Lindell Eickholz (note—you might like to know that George and Lindell helped print this book), star reporter Truman Logeman, household editor, Eula Mae Clutts, writer, Catherine Fourner, and social reporter, Jackie Talley who says If I write about it, it happened, and if it didn’t . . . well, it should have.” She also says, By Fah-erty’s bones. I’ll print it!” Shall we stroll out to the high school—that’s the way most students go—slowly. We’ve quite a list of distinguished educators in our ranks—they’re Jack Bushman, principal, Jim Rodgers, mathematics, Jerry Faughn, physiology, Shirley Werner, history, Marian Bremer, home economics, Maxine Cochrane, music, and Gerald Scurlock, chief truancy dis-suader. Also, Dick Stewart and Joe LaRuc, football and basketball coaches, respectively, whose teams are doing even better than the phcnomnal teams of ’5 6-’57. Also are here P.T.A. Officers Bonnie Brown, Jean Kersey, and Helen Reineking. Well, evening is coming on so let’s take in a little of Metropolis’ night life. Tonight is opening night for Mary Benard and Jo Ann Burrus’ great new play Grandma Grace, Spy for the S.P.C.A.” starring W. Ray Cromeenes, Karon Stokes, and Juanita Casper, Going in to see the play is playboy-about-town Bob Wittman. Over at the Pajja Room of Hotel Fillhigh, owner Wardell McNichols has a great show starring Crazy” Joe Cagle, Linda Searles, and Virginia Williams, jazz musicians all, also Betty Mayberry and her assistant Geneva McGhee, billed as Madam Mayberry, Rememberer Extraordinary.” Just arriving are Pat Stevens and Judy Yates, skating stars whom we see alighting from an early model blue Lafayette. Coming to watch the show are famous racing drivers Jack Flip” Mizcll, Harry Flop” Sandusky, and Jack Flap” Reynolds. Y VVith this I bring to a close our voyage into the future-past, and, as I, Joe Bryant, write off into the sunset, we hear the future-graduates say, This look into the past has been reassuring, for if they succeeded, so can we.” ur j?r incipal WARREN JENNINGS Southern Illinois University, Ed.
